Month In Review: March 2014

BY NISAR KHAN

As another month goes by, its another opportunity to digest some outstanding sport that has went by. Including the Six Nations, start of the F1 season, El Clasico and more, relive the best and biggest from Magnificent March.

In this article, take a comprehensive look back from the best and biggest sports stories of the month, including football around the World, the ins-and-outs from UFC’s Octagon, a perspective within the boundaries of cricket, the fast and furious Formula 1 and plenty more.

Some big headlines from Magnificent March included the thrilling El Clasico matchup – part of a wonderful month of football where title races took shape, and on the contrary some titles were decided as Bayern Munich and Celtic put an exclamation mark on their dominance.

There was also the Six Nations, as Ireland triumphed in the bowing-out of a legend, and the fastest sport in the World returned. Fights were plentiful, be it the wrestling ring, Octagon or boxing – and there was no shortage in basketball, either.

With plenty of content from videos, photos, recaps and more, this is the ideal way to wrap up this month’s sports. For videos (embedded via YouTube), click the “Video” link on each video if you are unable to view it through the player, and you’ll be directed externally to YouTube.com.

Let’s get things rolling, then…

Football: Bayern’s Bundesliga Success, Title Races, Champions League Knockouts

While title races took centre stage in Spain and England, with the inevitability of thrillers for glory becoming imminent, three dominating teams would emerge from their respective leagues – Olympiacos, Bayern Munich and Celtic, all three of whom embraced their league glory with plenty of games to spare.

El Clasico and Manchester United vs. Liverpool featured TURNER

Stoke City stunned the Gunners in what would be a month of downspirals for the North London occupants, although defeating Tottenham with an excellent Thomas Rosicky strike. Liverpool avenged their home loss to Southampton last year by thumping them 3 – 0 at St Mary’s, as the Reds made their title surge in a month of rampant victories for Brendan Rogers’ side

Another team that would find their stride were Chelsea – who thrashed Spurs and the Gunners to keep atop the table throughout March. However, they would suffer a setback a week after their Spurs’ win, as Fabian Delph’s lone goal stunned the league leaders at Villa Park. On that same weekend, Liverpool made a statement of mass magnitude, defeating Manchester United 3 – 0 in an Old Trafford domination

Video: Manchester United 0 – 3 Liverpool highlights YOUTUBE

While Manchester United seemingly looked to bounce back, with wins over Olympiakos to keep their Champions League Quarter-Final hopes intact, and Wayne Rooney scoring one of the best goals in the month in the 2 – 0 win at West Ham, it would quickly unwind when they suffered another home embarrassment – Manchester City dominated them throughout the game, beating them 3 – 0.

In the weekend before the Manchester derby, it was a sensational Saturday for the top three, most significantly from Chelsea, who thrashed Arsenal 6 – 0 in a Stamford Bridge statement of supremacy. Liverpool addressed their defensive errors over Cardiff with an affirmative 6 – 3 win, and Yaya Toure struck home a hat-trick as Fulham fell to Manchester City.

On that same weekend was a thrilling El Clasico matchup between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Nou Camp. It was a match that epitomized the phrase ‘Seven Goal Thriller’ with Lionel Messi’s hat-trick, including an 84th minute penalty, deciding the game as Barcelona won 4 – 3. The game further exemplified the fact that it was going to be a very razor-close title race, with Real Madrid losing to Sevilla in the week too. As the month drew to a close, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona had played the same amount of games, and just three points split them up at the top.

Bayern Munich clinched the Bundesliga title with seven games to spare as they defeated Hertha Berlin 3 – 1 to show their dominance in German football. Their undefeated streak though would be threatened against Hoffenheim in the weekend as they were put to a 3 – 3 draw, keeping their year-plus undefeated streak intact.

A win over Partick Thistle would see the same glory for Celtic, as they clinched their third title in a row. Olympiacos won their 41st title in history in the same week. Dominance in one part, but then there were incredibly close title races on the other.

The Champions League knockout phase concluded in the month also, with the Quarter-Final draws following shortly after. Although scoring, Man City were really no match for Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Atletico thumped Milan to get to the next stage, setting up for an enticing Quarter-Final between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, two of the challengers for the La Liga title. Meanwhile, PSG – who cruised past Leverkusen – and Chelsea, who saw off Galatasaray easily, where set to meet in the next phase. After easing past Arsenal, Bayern went on to face Manchester United who overturned a deficit as Robin van Persie’s hat-trick sent them through. The final tie pitted Dortmund and Real Madrid against one another.

As for the Europa League, Tottenham being the only English side fell to Benfica, despite a 2 – 2 draw in the second leg. AZ Alkamaar vs. Benfica, Lyon vs. Juventus, Basel vs. Valencia and Porto vs. Sevilla were set for the quarter finals, with the Spanish clubs well in all the European competitions.

Arsenal held on to grab a point on the final Saturday of March, drawing 1 – 1 with Manchester City. David Silva’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Flamini’s strike to blow the title race wide open again. Manchester United would respond to critics and show their support for manager David Moyes as they defeated Aston Villa 4 – 1 at Old Trafford. The “Moyes Out” plane that was flew over Old Trafford was booed by the fans. To further add to the growing conundrum of title opportunities, Crystal Palace stunned Chelsea with a 1 – 0 win at Selhurst Park. Liverpool finished the month at the top of the Premier League following a 4 – 0 thumping against Tottenham.

There was a key change to International football confirmed from 2018 as UEFA approved the ‘League of Nations’ tournament that would see most dates for International football friendlies replaced by a four different leagues of different teams based on their rankings. The years they would take place are on the odd years, when neither a World Cup or European Championship takes place. Learn more about the League of Nations with this guide »

Formula 1: Season Zooms To Dramatic Start, Mercedes Bathe In Glory

The Formula 1 season began in March with two grand prix from Australia and Malaysia. A dramatic start would mark the return of the fastest sport on the planet.

Successful Start: Rosberg and Hamilton won a grand prix to start the season MIRROR

Tensions and drama were plentiful as the F1 season began down under. Last season’s Champion, Sebastian Vettel, had to retire during the race along with Lewis Hamilton. Ultimately, Nico Rosberg went on to win the first race of the season in dominant fashion.

Video: Highlights from the Australian Grand Prix YOUTUBE

For Red Bull, a torrid month that seemed a fall from dominance would be capped off in preferable fashion as Sebastian Vettel finished third in the Malaysian Grand Prix. His teammate, Daniel Ricciardo was stripped of his second-place finish in Australia for over-consumption of fuel and retired in Malaysia after a problematic race where he was delayed by 10 seconds and his front wing slightly detached. New rules, new regulations, equals more drama – lesson learned.

Mercedes’ zoomed to the top of the constructor’s Championship as they finished a 1-2 in Malaysia. Nico Rosberg was second while Lewis Hamilton lead from the front to win big in a Malaysian Masterclass.

Cricket: Twenty20 World Cup Takes Shape

The Twenty20 Cricket World Cup began in Bangladesh with a tournament that was well-served in its job of delivering plenty of pulsating drama across the pitch.

India went on a tear in the tournament AP

In the group stages, Bangladesh and Netherlands progressed to the elite ‘Super 10’ stage. The hosts cruised by their opposition, with their home fans roaring load and raucous on many occasions.

Hong Kong and Nepal, two newcomers to cricket, would post one of the lowest Twenty20 scores in history with 69. However, that record would be broken when Netherlands posted a minuscule score of 39 against Sri Lanka – the lowest in Twenty20 history.

India were first to qualify to the semi-finals with a win over the hosts. For England, their 2014 turmoil would continue as they lost to New Zealand, in spite of a spirited performance.

Pakistan defeated Bangladesh too, in what would be a tale of triumph in the group stages to an unfortunate tale of punching above their weight and resulting in decimation.

UFC: Hendricks Captures Vacated Welterweight Belt, Hendo Wins Shogun Rematch, Octagon Heads to London

Four fight nights in four different continents – a vacated title on the line in Dallas in the States, a legendary rematch in Brazil, young Welterweight showdown in China and a wild night in London with TheSportMatrix’s correspondents in attendance.

Johnny Hendricks, Alexander Gustafsson and Dan Henderson were all victorious CBS / ESPN

Dong Hyun Kim made an early contender for Knockout of the Year as he put away John Hathaway with a fourth-round spinning elbow as part of an entertaining card in Macau, China. The Brit Hathaway, who put on a gutsy performance, was defeated in his return. While earlier on, Matt Mitrione was the victor from a Heavyweight scrap with Shawn Jordan.

The Octagon then took center stage in London’s O2 Arena. Alexander Gustafsson scored a second-round knockout of hometown-fighter Jimi Manuwa to secure #1 contender-ship for the Light Heavyweight strap. Melvin Guillard, who was released by the organisation in the following weeks, lost to Michael Johnson in a co-main event that failed to live up to expectation. A raucous crowd in London, and expansion to primetime television was a key mark to the UFC’s progressively-global growth.

Video: Alexander Gustafsson’s post-fight interview YOUTUBE

Then came UFC 171. The AmericanAirlines Center in Dallas, TX, was packed to the rafters to witness a battle between two of the Welterweight Division’s hardest-hitters for the vacated Welterweight Championship. After a phenomenal five-round main event, Johnny Hendricks defeated Robbie Lawler by decision, in an early Fight of the Year contender. Earlier, Tyron Woodley continued his rise up the ranks as he stopped Carlos Condit in an interesting battle.

Video: Slow-motion highlights from UFC 171 YOUTUBE

An extraordinary fight card in Natal, Brazil played host to a historic main event from 2011’s Fight of the Year. Dan Henderson collated a marvelous comeback, having been knocked down twice in the rounds prior, and landed a huge right hand to ground Shogun, before the referee stopped the pounding. Aged 43, Henderson knocked out his respected rival Shogun Rua to culminate a terrific card of fights.

It was truly a stacked month inside the Octagon, spanning across four continents. Plenty of great fights again headlined by Johnny Hendricks leading the way for a new era inside the Octagon. Hendo and Shogun were part of another superb fight.

Although still making great progress in his workouts after a horrendous injury at UFC 168, Anderson Silva announced that he would not be fighting this year. Meanwhile, another legend currently on a hiatus, Georges St-Pierre, announced another torn ACL injury, the same injury that kept him out of action before returning at UFC 154. UFC 173 was given another main event between Renan Barao and TJ Dillishaw, after Chris Weidman’s injury delayed his title defense with Lyoto Machida.

Basketball: More Teams Seal NBA Playoff Fates, March Madness

Its the one month in particular where College Basketball seems to overtake NBA in terms of popularity and mainstream intake. Although less in the spotlight, it was a month in the NBA where teams edged closer towards the playoffs, sealing their fate, while colleges busted brackets across the globe.

Madness Epitomised: ‘March Madness’ was thrilling for all NATIONAL POST

Kevin Durant kept up his race for MVP, while LeBron did the same, including a thrilling game-winner to seal the HEAT’s game with Trail Blazers in their favour.

One of the biggest headlines of the month came not in the form of an exuberant run of wins, but an opposite, of losses. The Philadelphia 76ers were humiliated week in, week out, and would end up tying the record for most consecutive losses in the NBA (26). They would defeat the Detroit Pistons 123 – 98 to snap the loss streak and avoid making a new one. In the manner that they won, if you didn’t know better then you’d expect them to be another class.

After an (unsurprisingly) bracket-busting March Madness, the Final Four would be set for the next month. Florida Gators, Conneticut Huskies, Wisconsin Badgers and Kentucky Wildcats made it past the tremendous series where College Hoops delivered plenty of drama, going down to the wire.

Boxing: Big Matches Made, Kell Brook & Danny Garcia Victorious

With big matchmaking in the States and in Britain, the rest of the year’s boxing was anticipated with some interesting matchmaking. Meanwhile, Danny Garcia and Kell Brook were victorious in their respective bouts.

Kell Brook, who has been linked to an Amir Khan fight, won yet again, stopping Alvaro Robles in the eighth round to secure a title shot. On the same night, Danny Garcia defeated Mauricio Herrera in a debatable split decision.

Earlier on in the month, a showcase of fine British boxing saw Ricky Burns fall in defeat to Terence Crawford.

Carl Froch vs. George Groves’ highly anticipated rematch was confirmed to take place at Wembley Stadium. 60,000 tickets sold out within an hour for the blockbuster fight dubbed as the biggest in British boxing history. Also, Floyd Mayweather snubbed Amir Khan and decided to face Marcos Maidana in May, despite Amir Khan winning a Twitter poll from the fans to decide Floyd’s next opponent.

WWE: Final Steps Before WrestleMania

There was some subdued anticipation, albeit entertaining, as the final wind-down to WrestleMania 30 ensued. Undertaker confronting Lesnar out of a coffin, Daniel Bryan holding an arena protest and The Shield’s turn for good justice were some of the highlights.

There’s bits here and there, so we’ll just let WWE’s YouTube series “WWE in 5” – weekly recaps – take it away.

Hamilton Bounces Back With Mercedes’ Malaysian Masterclass

BY NISAR KHAN

Lewis Hamilton finished ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg in Malaysia to win the Malaysian Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur.

Embrace: Rosberg, Hamilton jubilant

TheSportMatrix Coverage Of Malaysian Grand Prix 2014 »

It was the esteemed 1-2 positioning for Mercedes, as Nico Rosberg – who won the Australian Grand Prix in the race prior – finished behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton, as the Brit won from his pole position in the qualifying.

Lewis Hamilton lead for the entirety of the race.

Sebastian Vettel had much better success in comparison to his early retirement in Australia, finishing on the podium. It would, though, be a much more varied sense of fortune from his teammate Daniel Ricciardo, after he retired in the 49th lap.

The Aussie suffered another torrid outing with his 43rd lap seeing the front wing of his car detach slightly. Later on, the new regulations would come to his misfortune as he was given a 10-second penalty for unsafe release from the pit. A drastic descent from podium challenge to a multitude of problems in the space of two pit stops saw him plummet to as low as 16th.

A rarity occurred in the race as both Sauber racers, Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez, were retired from the race. They were part of seven retired racers in total that also included Lotus’ Maldonado and Force India’s Perez. It was the first double-retirement for the team in 2 years.

It was an utterly dominant display by Lewis Hamilton as he finished comfortably in first, helped by a great set of backroom staff whom he thanked after winning, calling them “amazing”.

The podium was definitely much less subdued and awkward than last time out, which saw Sebastian Vettel overtake his teammate Mark Webber in one of the most infamous events of the season. Red Bull suffered some turmoil on Daniel Ricciardo’s part, with no points on the standings yet, although signs of encouragement from Vettel’s podium finish could get the team going again.

Lewis Hamilton’s dominance would begin from the very first lap as he broke off from the rest of the pack and created a big lead early on. In the fourth turn, Bianchi and Maldonado made contact with a collision early on.

Kimi Raikonnen finished 12th in the race after suffering a right rear tyre puncture in the second lap and fell to the back. He would eventually make ground in the race to finish ahead of Chilton, Ericsson and Koboyashi.

BY CENA HARPIN

Kell Brook was recently interviewed, and “The Special One” had plenty to say about an upcoming World Title fight, and the possibility of fighting Amir Khan.

Kell Brook was recently interviewed on Ringside, and had plenty to say about his upcoming plans in his Boxing career. Brook said that his team have already contacted Amir Khan about a possible fight, but a deal doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen anytime soon.

Kell Brook is in line for a shot at a major World Title in the Summer, and the Special One is hoping for a fight against Amir Khan in 2015.

Amir Khan was originally wanting the opportunity to fight the undefeated, Floyd Mayweather, but as “The Money”chose a different opponent, that fight went up in smoke, but Mayweather has told Khan that he will fight him in the future.

If Kell Brook captures the Welterweight Title in the Summer, and Khan doesn’t get the chance to fight Mayweather just yet, we might just see a fight between Kell Brook and Amir Khan, in a fight that would promise to be enthralling encounter.

The rain in Malaysia falls mainly… at the Sepang Circuit! With 50 mins until Qualy start the heavens opened and Qualy was delayed by 50 minutes. At the start of Q1 the two Mercedes AMG drivers come out first to set a lap time in uncertain conditions.

As Q1 progresses Nico Rosberg sets a fastest time of 1:57.183 before Marcus Ericsson crashes and the session is red flagged.

Q2 starts with most drivers opting to go out early with intermediate tyres. Ferrari have a disaster when Alonso clashes with Kvyat at turn 9 and a red flag is shown! A result of poor visibility and poor judgement by both drivers, no penalty applied. Alonso suffers a broken upper wishbone suspension failure which is soon fixed by the Ferrari mechanics in time for Q3.

Drivers through to Q3 were Ham,Vet,Ros,Ric,Hul,Alo,Rai,But,Mag and Ver! Q3 starts with most of the drivers coming out on track in wet conditions still. Full wets or Inters the only major decision to make now! Lewis Hamilto sets the pace early on with a time of 1:59,431 which Vettel and Alonso chase in 2nd and 3rd. The rain then increased and the initial lap times proved to be the best. Lewis Hamilton took pole in a car that clearly had more time in it. Vettel takes second on the grid while Nico Rosberg starts in 3rd place.

So the rain threw a curveball into todays qualifying and the Mercedes team still came up trumps! Still going to back Lewis for the win!

Starting grid positions:

1 Hamilton
2 Vettel
3 Rosberg
4 Alonso
5 Ricciardo
6 Raikkonen
7 Hulkenberg
8 Magnussen
9 Vergne

The Mercedes team are still dominant but look is coming up on the rails again? Sebastian Vettel! Reliability will be the key here!

South Africa Scrape Past England In World Twenty20 Thriller

BY CENA HARPIN

South Africa defeated England by just 3 runs to eliminate them from the 2014 World t20 Tournament. Many thought the South Africans were going to demolish England, but the Three Lions definitely gave South Africa a hard fight.

Embedded image permalink

South Africa one the toss and elected to bat first. At the end of their 20 overs, the South Africans managed to score a total of 196 runs, with just 5 wickets being conceded. AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla were the two stand out batsman in the innings, with de Villiers knocking 69 runs off just 28 balls, and Amla scoring 56 runs off 37 balls. The England wicket takers were Tim Bresnan, Chris Jordan, Stuart Broad, and spinner bowler, James Tredwell. SA also conceded another wicket to Ravi Bopara, one got rid of Duminy with a run out. A strong innings from South Africa dented England’s hopes of chasing the total down.

England started their batting innings fairly strong, with openers Alex Hales and Michael Lumb creating a solid 46 run partnership, until Lumb was caught by Miller off the bowling of Parnell. Ali scored just 10 for England, Morgan scored 14, and Buttler knocked a total of 34 runs. After being 175-7 in 19.1 overs, England still needed a fair few amount of runs, and it seemed very unlikely. And after completed their 20 overs of batting, England reached a total of 193-7, but it wasn’t enough to win, as South Africa won by 3 runs.

This was a very competitive match, and England have nothing to be ashamed of. They almost slayed the South Africans, but they just couldn’t get to their target of 197.

South Africa now look on to the final of the World t20 tournament, but the big question is, can they get the job done and become the 2014 World t20 champions? Be sure to give your thoughts in the comment box below, and thanks for reading!

United Show Fans Real Deal With Brutal Win Over Aston Villa at Old Trafford

BY @IMWITHLESNAR

Manchester United 4 – 1 Aston Villa

Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata scored for Manchester United as they bounced back to defeat Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were the better side today in their 4-1 demolition of down town rivals Aston Villa from Birmingham with goals from, Rooney (2), Mata got his first goal for United since joining from Chelsea in January and Javier Hernandez grabbed a late goal to seal a vital United win in the Barclays Premier League.

The banner that said “Wrong Choice”, Moyes about came to mouths after it passed over Old Trafford after the first minute of the game and that plane to do that was ordered by the Red Devils Barmy Army (the ones who do all of the chants on home games at Old Trafford.

So have United got what it takes to get a six game comeback? What can they make of a problematic season?

West Indies Dispatch Aussies In Thriller, India Ease Past Hosts To Qualify For Semi-Finals

Recap from the twelfth day in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, featuring West Indies vs. Australia and India vs. Bangladesh.
Cricket

BY NISAR KHAN

India overcame hosts Bangladesh to become the first team to qualify for the World Twenty20 Semi-Finals. In the game prior, West Indies’ captain Darren Sammy inspired his side to victory over the Aussies.

The first of two games in the twelfth day of action was an enthralling game between West Indies and Australia. West Indies won with merely two balls to spare, pushing Australia on to the brink of departure from the tournament.

Darren Sammy, captain of the winning side, hit successive sixes in a magnificent display where he hit 34 runs off 13 balls to see his side to victory.

Chris Gayle, although having a lackluster game prior, hit a half-century to give West Indies a big leap to open the chase.

However, the Aussies’ posted a challenging 178 runs that took its toll on West Indies, looking like they were on course for a loss with the task of chasing 49 runs from 21 balls.

West Indies had been provoked in the build-up to the match with plenty of ill-feeling taking over the press conferences. This time though, West Indies saved it with euphoric celebrations after a triumphant victory.

Australia thought they had the game in control with the second and third wickets coming with six runs of each other, looking to cause a spanner in the works for West Indies’ steady start.

21 balls remained from the game and the West Indies looked far from in the game. However, an elated partnership between Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy turned the game completely around, setting up for a big over, not as big as expected earlier, although having to chase twelve runs to win from the final over.

It would come down to the captain. Anxiety raised significantly for Windies’ fans as Darren Sammy failed to score from the first two balls of the over, and thus putting the game within Australia’s fingertips – that was until two consecutive sixes to win the game emphatically.

Exuberant, incredible celebrations would spontaneously ensue after Sammy’s winning six – the West Indies were emphatic in celebration, edging Australia towards elimination and getting back at them with superb acknowledgement of their win.

What a marvelous game of cricket. Yet again, the Twenty20 format keeps all on the edge of their seat, going down to the final over. It only takes a few good hits to completely change the complexion of the game – with this thriller being a prime example. And there was still an opportunity to see Chris Gayle express his excitement. After losing his footing when the victors flocked onto the pitch to celebrate, he lead the Gangnam dances to really rub it in.

Much less thrilling, though, was India’s win over the hosts Bangladesh. The Indians picked up their third straight win in the tournament to progress to the semi-finals.

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni were the final duo before India went onto win. Kohli was alongside Rohit Sharma as both hit half-centuries setting up for a comfortable and convincing win, and pushing Bangladesh pretty much near to the exit, too.

Amit Mishra headlined the superb bowling with 3-26 as Bangladesh totted 138 runs to start the game. The hosts’ real resistance came only with Anamal Haque adding 44, alas in vein, as Bangladesh edged further to exit.

The easy chase was concluded with MS Dhoni, hitting some big boundaries, and the winning shot, to keep the favorites well in it and seal their destination at the Semi-Finals of the tournament.

Comment: Captains’ Winners, Thrillers

Yet again, the tournament continues to deliver. Cricket going down to the wire has become a regular occurrence, much to the euphoria of cricket fans, and West Indies’ win over Australia showed it all.

Australia now face a very tough task if they look to qualify, not only with struggling Bangladesh having to win, but them too, if they want to have any chance of progressing. Uncomfortably so, their fate now does not lie solely in their hands.

India are the hot favorites right now. They obviously want to finish first to get the easier semi-final match, but have an opportunity to experiment and change things round for the next game having played the same team for their three only and winning games in the tournament.

Captain MS Dhoni didn’t have to do much, thanks in part to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s double centuries, in a cornerstone partnership of the innings. It seemed like India could bat on, staying a few runs under the amount of balls, and wait for the opening to smash it into the rafters.

Down To The Wire: The Three Games That Will Define La Liga & Premier League Titles

BY NISAR KHAN

The Premier League and La Liga title races are on course to go down to the wire, with a thrilling story unfolded out in Spain and England. In the remaining fixtures, three big games are set that will arguably determine the title.

There are three teams firmly positioned in the title race for the respective leagues. Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool jockey for position in the Premier League, while Atletico Madrid keep up with the bigger Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid for La Liga glory.

While every game is important, the meetings between each side will be most definitive, considering the hot form that the teams are on. Although, as we know, stunners can come out of nowhere, just look back to Sevilla’s win over Real Madrid, handing them back-to-back losses.

Liverpool vs. Manchester City

Date: Sunday 13th April
Location: Anfield, Liverpool
Current League Positions: Liverpool (2nd), Man City (3rd) as of 28 March
Positional Battle: Attack (Liverpool), Midfield (Man City)
Prediction: Liverpool 2 – 2 Manchester City

A tantalizing battle between two of the league’s most potent goal machines will deliver plenty of drama in front of a raucous Anfield crowd, one which will undoubtedly have title implications.

Sergio Aguero could feature that will make the City tandem all the more ferocious, nicely matching up, though, against Liverpool’s star-striking duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, finding incredible success over the past season.

Liverpool’s biggest problem in the game is their defense. They are most vulnerable to set pieces, as we’ve seen many-a-time, from the early, out-of-place home loss to Southampton, squandering a place to top the table in the first Merseyside Derby, and as recent as their Anfield win over Sunderland, were they held on for an anxious final fifteen minutes to keep up the pressure.

Considering both’s form, something will have to give in the game – and that could be Liverpool’s defense. Or, low and behold, City have weaknesses. In spite of their vast backlog of attacking resources, in defense at times they can be left vulnerable, maybe not down central like Liverpool, but definitely on the full-backs.

Manchester City’s full-backs play in more of the wing-back position, pacing forward and sometimes leaving voids at the back – voids that Liverpool could exploit. In addition to their home form and support, it can be a factor.

This is going to be one thrilling game of football. Manchester City won the first time round on Boxing Day last year, after Simon Mignolet’s mistake to concede Negredo’s chip, combined with Vincent Kompany, outweighed Phillipe Coutinho’s opener. However, the Reds were left with a bitter sense of injustice as clear cut goal chances were ruled offside – replays suggested otherwise.

There’s plenty to prove this time round. Not only their certainty from the first tie, but if they can go on to hold up the Premier League trophy this season.

Liverpool vs. Chelsea

Date: Sunday 27 April
Location: Anfield, Liverpool
Current League Positions: Liverpool (2nd), Chelsea (1st) as of 28 March
Positional Battle: Attack (Liverpool), Midfield (Defense)
Prediction: Liverpool 2 – 0 Chelsea

Jose Mourinho and Brendan Rogers have had big impacts upon their return, or start of their managerial reign on their respective clubs. Another entertaining encounter, like the one in late December last year, is definitely on the cards.

Liverpool’s defense will be met up with a much more brittle defense all-round, while midfield prominence on the part of Chelsea could see them through.

Samuel Eto’o struck the killer blow to Liverpool in their game last year, but it was the Reds – just like against City – who took the lead early on, but were unable to maintain it throughout the game.

Once again, it was entertaining. Both teams matched well, and yet again there were possible arguments for either side’s cause of unjust treatment. More to prove, but more lies on the line.

Chelsea’s midfield, along with Samuel Eto’o who’s gradually finding his stride, could prove a tough match for Liverpool – but with Suarez and Sturridge, along with the whole of Liverpool’s defense and attack on form, they could have cause for a victory.

Liverpool surely will get a win at Anfield at one of the games, its more likely at this one because of Chelsea’s attacking weaknesses. Liverpool’s current run of form and home record will play a pivotal role in those games.

Barcelona vs. Atletico Madrid

Date: Sunday 18 May
Location: Nou Camp, Barcelona
Current League Positions: Barcelona (1st), Atletico Madrid (2nd) as of 28 March
Positional Battle: Forwards (Barcelona), Forwards (Atletico Madrid)
Prediction: Barcelona 2 – 1 Atletico Madrid

The La Liga title may be decided by one game on the very final day of the season. Now that’s one grand occasion.

Barcelona won a thrilling Clasico over the weekend to keep up the pressure on the Madrid teams, and Real’s slip-up on Wednesday to Sevilla all but aided Atletico to keep atop the La Liga, as they beat Granada.

Real Madrid’s losses to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona will come to cost them if they finish even. The head-to-head rule in Spain will take them out of the equation.

With Real Madrid possibly sitting at third for the tie, although that will fluctuate leading up to the game, this game could be for all the marbles. It will be like a cup final, if it plays out right, how big would that be?

Before that, we get two times to build up for the big game in the Champions League Quarter-Finals. There will be two legs of action between league challengers, as one could make ground on another. An interesting tie to say the least.

More questions will be answered, but for now we can continue to speculate. Will David Villa be able to spoil Barcelona’s party at the Nou Camp – and with Diego Costa on his side, can he keep the form up? Or will Messi’s sublime run continue to lift yet another league title?

Stalemate: The two teams drew goalless when they met in January AFP

It’s Pivotal

Liverpool’s home run will help them in the games and may play a big role, hosting Man City and Chelsea successively at home, along with an away trip in between.

As for Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, since their goalless draw in January didn’t provide many answers, we can wait till they meet in the Champions League Quarter-Finals for plenty more answers.

Three games of big magnitude going into define the Spanish and English football leagues. With thrilling title races unfolding between our eyes, these games are the ones to watch closely.

England Edge Out Sri Lanka In World T20 Contest

BY CENA HARPIN

After a miserable few months for England, they finally hit back and defeat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the World t20 tournament.

The man of the match in my eyes, was easily the upcoming star, Alex Hales who was 116* from just 64 balls. An absolutely outstanding innings from the English youngster, who is progressing after every single match.

Sri Lanka scored a total of 189/4, with Jayawardene and Dilshan being the top scores for SL. Jayawardene scored 89 runs off 51 balls, until he was bowled by Chris Jordan, ending his near century innings, and Dilshan scored a total of 55 runs coming off 47 balls, until he was caught by Chris Jordan, off the bowling of Jade Dernbach. Jordan and Dernbach shared 2 wickets each, as SL only conceded 4 wickets.

England got to their target of 190 in 19.2 overs, with only a few balls left until the end of the match. The two top scores for England were Alex Hales who knocked 116* (64) and Eoin Morgan who played very well, picking up 57 runs off 38 balls.

After a miserable run in 2014, England hit back with a much needed victory over Sri Lanka, in the World t20 tournament. Can England progress and win the t20 tournament? Be sure to give us your thoughts in the comment box below, and thanks for reading!
