STARTING LINE-UPS:

MATCH REPORT:

Arsenal got the proceedings underway in North London with the set-pieces coming early. Tottenham whipped in the first corner of the game just a minute in, and Santi Cazorla verified Hugo Lloris goalkeeping ability with an excellently curled free kick of which was saved. Three minutes later, the Spaniard would once again come close from the free-kick, as it went underneath the wall but went wide. Lloris and his defenders were well beaten, but the post wasn’t.

Tottenham erupted in a spell of great play on the flanks, dominating them with a few chances around the 10 minute mark. Roberto Soldado had a decent look-in on goal when it was cut back, but Mertesacker blocked and it went out to safety.

The game settled in but things did not quieten down, Arsenal got the ball, squandered possession, or had a chance and vice versa. But then the deadlock was broke in the 23rd minute.

Theo Walcott’s perfect timing in his run down the right allowed him to cut it across to Olivier Giroud for a delightful finish to give Arsenal the 1 – 0 lead. Walcott caused more troubles for Tottenham in the 25th minute when a great run by Ramsey fed the shot although Lloris would save emphatically.

It developed into an open, entertaining game of football. Chances came and went. On the half-hour mark, there was a decent opportunity for Ramsey to fire it in to goal when Walcott squared the ball but it went way over the bar.

Just after half an hour through the game, Arsenal fans were vocal after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris sprinted out to challenge Theo Walcott. The referee did not book him and replays suggested it was well-timed. However Rosicky would get booked for a hesitant foul in the fallout from the incident.

Jack Wilshere was substituted for Mathieu Flamini mere minutes before half time as he picked up an injury. The Frenchman returned to play after he was signed earlier in the week. Wilshere’s injury is a big blow for the England squad too, who face important qualifiers in the next ten days.

Arsenal lead going into half-time, after Olivier Giroud’s superb finish. Each team had their fare share of chances, but they were thwarted by great defence and goalkeeping or majorly squandered with poor play. Entertaining first 45 minutes, things seemed all to play for in a very open game.

Tottenham changed the game quite a bit when the ball was rolling for the second half. Once again, Paulinho was making an impact with his chances – although nothing came from the corner.

Spurs appealed for a penalty in the 52nd minute as Koscielny seemed to plant two hands on Roberto Soldado in the box. The referee made the right decision by continuing play.

After around 10 minutes on the pitch, Mathieu Flamini received a yellow card for his foul on Danny Rose. He may have got the ball, but with the studs up, he was rightly booked.

Giroud could have scored another with an excellently-orchestrated piece of play by Santi Cazorla, setting up for a curling effort that was deflected off a defender before Lloris pushed it round the post. Giroud would later capitalize on Dawson’s poor use of possession, feeding it to Walcott but Lloris got there first.

Etienne Capoue suffered an injury 73 minutes in, looking in a lot of pain. The French International was taken off on a stretcher, and made way for record signing Erik Lamela to make his Premier League debut.

Things really got tense as the match concluded, Arsenal had a few chances to wrap things up and looked threatening on the break. They did not seem hesitant nor panicked at the back. Subsitute Monreal could have put the game to rest but Kyle Walker saved it momentarily.

Sczceny retained Arsenal’s lead with an amazing save from the bottom corner of the goal after a set piece. More blocking by Arsenal’s defense put the ball out to Walker who fired it wide accross goal.

There was a tense conclusion to the game with five minutes of stoppage time. It was a nail-biting finish to the game, fighting ferociously to keep the lead, complete edge-of-your seat stuff. Remarkable. What a tense finish to the game.

THE BREAKDOWN:

GIROUD THE KEY OPENER FOR ARSENAL:
Olivier Giroud once again opened Arsenal’s scoring in the North London Derby. He has scored all three of Arsenal’s opening goals this season.

MORE WOES FOR ENGLAND SQUAD:
Jack Wilshere picked up a knock just before half-time, and is likely out of the England squad. With Brendan Rogers also announcing that Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson are doubtful, Roy Hodgson’s England squad is in turmoil.

TRANSFER DEADLINES IMPACT
With deadline day quickly approaching, Tottenham and Arsenal are set to be pretty active. If these performances are anything to come by, there is still a lot to do.

SOLID DEFENCE:
Arsenal’s defence was essential in maintaining their lead, they kept calm and even when the tension was high, they dealt with it well.

STATS:

MAN OF THE MATCH:

THE FINAL SAY:

Frustrating loss for Tottenham, massive win for the Gunners. For the Spurs, it is a case of the final part being lackluster. Arsenal’s defense maintained their victory, solid defending by the back four. Despite the performances from both, active transfers are indeed needed. The finish to the match was nail-biting, every Spurs and Gunners fan must have been pacing up and down, what a frantic end to the match.

Arsenal pick up an imperative victory at the North London Derby. Three important points gained for Arsenal as they squander Tottenham’s 100% record. They have got the points, now we will see if they will spend the cash as the Transfer Deadline nears.

Barclays Premier League 2013/14: Preview Series – Tottenham Hotspurs

By Nisar Khan

Tottenham Hotspurs missed out on Champions League Football last season, but this season they look to exceed their previous attempt. While the ongoing gossip about Gareth Bale’s future at the club continues to brew, the Spurs won’t lack motivation to get in the Champions League this season. Here’s why:

Verdict:

As the inevitability of Bale’s departure from the club increases, Tottenham will need to refocus to make sure they are not hindered by the possible loss. Losing such a vital player like Bale could be disastrous, but they have quality that if used well, it could pay well for Tottenham in the season.

Spurs are still chasing numerous targets that they have their eye on, we are set for two weeks of intense transfer activity, and this could improve or deplete the Spurs’ chances.

The Spurs have risen over the past years, but this season could possibly be a trip in the opposite direction, as they are in search for the extra push for Champions League football.

Do they have what it takes to go further this time?

My guess is not quite. I expect the Spurs to stay around 5th, but maybe they will go higher around the new year. It may be another push for Champions League football that could end with the same painful outcome.

The acquisition of Spanish League star Roberto Saldado is a key player to focus on, with a great track record from his time in La Liga, he could have a huge impact on the squad if played well with teammates.

Tottenham may have found themselves about an uncomfortable and pivotal situation. Gareth Bale’s move or stay could be sink or float for Spurs in the race for European Football. If Bale stays, Tottenham could amass their success from the previous season and be back in the Champions League as it would be a great combination amongst the other additions, but if he leaves…

Tottenham may sink. It does depend on how the remainder of the transfer season pans out. Their first game is a trip to Premier League promoted Crystal Palace, with the absence of Bale, it will be a much more telling preview of things to come.

Tottenham are up for another challenge in the race for Champions League football. They may have the further ambition for title contenders, but this depends on where Bale goes. For now, as Tottenham’s future does rely on the transfer activity in the next few weeks, their game against the newly-promoted Crystal Palace will give us a better preview of things to come for Tottenham’s Premier League campaign.

Predicting the Top 8 in the Western Conference in 2013/14

The Western Conference Predicted Top 8.

(Assuming all players projected to be healthy by the start of the season are healthy and play well) *As of 08/09/13

8. Denver Nuggets

Initially I wanted to keep the #3 from last year out of the Western Conference playoffs this year. They lost their coach and best player. Usually that does not bode well, but Denver solved this problem. Brian Shaw was the best available coach and they went out and got him. They also signed Nate Robinson and JJ Hickson, two high energy solid players. Denver is still a young, athletic team, that can run 12 deep. Also there home court advantage cannot go on noticed. Look for Denver to get it to the playoffs this season.

New Sheriff in Town, Brian Shaw looks to implement his philosophies on the exciting Nuggets squad. (via CBSDenver)

7. Minnesota Timberwolves

Look for the T-Wolves to make the playoffs since Kevin Garnett left. Last season was decimated by injury. Love and Rubio to start the season healthy. Minnesota has a great balance of size inside, shooters and point guard play. If they can play some defense look for them to make the playoffs this season.

DPOY, Marc Gasol, helped lead the Grizz to the WCF last season

6. Memphis Grizzlies

It is really hard for me to put Memphis this low, but I cannot put them any higher. I do not understand firing your head coach after making it to the conference finals. This Grizz remain virtually the same team, while the top 5 teams all improved. Memphis may be the 6th seed, but they are far from an easy out in the playoffs.

5. Golden State Warriors

Many people want to put the Warriors in the top 4 in the West this season. Golden State is the trendy pick to make the finals, I see it a little different. The lose of Carl Landry and Jared Jack cannot go unnoticed, but they did sign Andre Igoudala.  With the addition of A.I. Barnes will be moved to the bench. Look for Barnes to excel as a 6th man and Kent Bazemore grow up before our eyes. I like Golden State this year and see them battling with Houston in the first round.

Steph Curry and Andre Iguodala, now teammates in the Golden State. (via smimg)

4. Houston Rockets

Did signing Dwight Howard make the Rockets the over-whelming favorites to win the West? No – but it did make them a legitimate contender. Look for Harden and Howard to develop a great inside-out game. Houston will be the same run and gun team, but now they have brought an elite defender, to help slow down there opponents.

VIDEO: Rockets’ Rank In Western Conference?

3. San Antonio Spurs

Look for the defending Western Conference Champions to be a legitimate contender again. Look for Pop to expand Kahwi Leonard’s role on offense and Tim Duncan to be the same steady Tim Duncan. Ginobli will play less minutes and stay fresh for the playoffs. You can never count out San Antonio as long as Pop is the coach and Tim Duncan is on the Roster.

SO CLOSE: The Big Fundamental will be looking for vindication, and Ring #5. (via NBA)

2. Oklahoma City Thunder

OKC has the best player in the Western Conference, Kevin Durant. Look for KD and Westbrook to come out firing next season. Jeremy Lamb and Reggie Jackson will both have expanded roles and be key to their success. The Thunder are the most balanced team in the NBA. They can run with anyone or grind out a win against anyone. Look for them to battle for the Western Conference Championship.

1. Los Angeles Clippers

This is my most controversial pick. The most under-rated and best move of the off-season was the LA Clippers bringing in the 2nd best coach in the league, Doc Rivers. The Clippers re-signed CP3 and surrounded him with shooters. Blake Griffin has taking a lot of criticism this off-season, look for him to have his best season as a pro. I am going out on a limb, but I really like The Clippers winning the west this year.

The West has always been a strong conference, and that will not change come 2013-14 season.

NBA Finals: Game 2 – Miami Make It Even

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?’http’:’https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+’://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js’;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, ‘script’, ‘twitter-wjs’);Miami HEAT and San Antonio Spurs collided in the 2nd Game of the NBA Finals from Miami. In a game of two halves, Miami prevailed and made a big statement with a resounding 19 point win.

Game 1 saw San Antonio Spurs take a lead in the series, defeating Miami 92 – 88 with a stellar performance by Tony Paker and ‘The Big Fundamental’ Tim Duncan. Meanwhile, LeBron James’ 18pts, 10 assists and 18 rebounds were not enough for the previous Champions to get the win.

The first quarter ended all even 22 – 22, the leading scorer being Danny Green after scoring three consecutive three-pointers.

1st  Quarter Shot Chart via HEAT.com

Another interesting fact is that the Spurs had 5 turnovers – more turnovers in the first quarter than their total amount in Game 1. It was an entertaining way to kick off the game, with both teams looking good and wanting a victory in the NBA Finals.
Birdman_original

Miami HEAT finished the first half five points ahead and with the intense defense they had forced 8 turnovers for the Spurs. Danny Green finished the half as top scorer following four three pointers, and LeBron James had only four points – a shocker to many. The bulk point-scoring was from Miami’s backcourt with Wade and Chalmers both scoring 10 points.

2nd Quarter Shot Chart via HEAT.com

The HEAT dominated with the points in the paint, and also got a hand from the bench scorers. Spurs however trailed in points in the paint, but were 6-6 from beyond the arc.

Best play of the first half:

Turnovers, Tiredness and Three-pointers galore in the first half. Spurs were victim to their own turnovers, a downfall. Tiredness a possible factor from the HEAT after a gruelling game 1 and going to game 7 with the Pacers. Three pointers have been essential for Spurs to stay in it. Things remained relatively close, but this game had more to give…

Screenshot2013-06-09at6

The third quarter saw Miami take the biggest lead of the NBA Finals, collating a run of big plays. Mario Chalmers took many of the headlines in the quarter, with several important plays including him giving up an open three to assist Ray Allen. HEAT finished the third quarter on some serious momentum, with the first double-digit lead in the finals, and Miami looking to settle it in the fourth quarter.

LeBron James was effective not necessarily on the stats, but on aiding his team in the screens. Chalmers and Wade continued to keep the HEAT going, whilst Danny Green proved he was a talent but his team trailed.

Third Quarter Shot Chart via HEAT.com

The HEAT were quick off the mark in the fourth quarter, continuing their dominance in the third quarter and were on a 23 – 3 run, leading 84 – 65 when the Spurs called a timeout.

This was the major turning point in the game, the HEAT had taken over and were in control.
It was officially a blowout – LeBron was on fire now, and HEAT had it in the bag.

LeBron was involved in one huge moment in the game, with a MONSTER block on Thiago Splitter!

FINAL: SAS 84 – 103 MIA
The HEAT bounce back from their Game 1 loss to dominate the Spurs. A game of two halves, one of which was close, the second of which Miami ran away with it and made a big statement. One thing does remain, the Spurs have stolen homecourt advantage, will this be a factor? Miami pull through off a big run, now for Game 3, from San Antonio.

NBA Finals: Game 1 – Spurs’ Veterans Put on a Show

Tim Duncan, the Big Fundamental, had not played in 10 days, which is near forever when it comes to the postseason.

But Duncan showed no sign of this. Like aging wine, Timmy D improved as the game went on, he became more dominant.

And his improved play would serve as a catalyst for the rest of his Spurs comrades as they executed perfectly in a 92-88 Game 1 win.

Duncan ended with 20 points & 14 rebounds, while Star PG Tony Parker led all scorers with 21 points; he also notched 6 dimes.

What the Heat lacked in rest, they seemed to more than make up for with a much better rhythm through the first three quarters of play.

Prior to Game 1, Spurs guard Manu Ginobili expressed concern about Miami’s overall speed.

“I’m more concerned about seeing what kind of a rhythm or executing style that we have [in Game 1],” Spurs Gregg Popovich said before tip-off.  “We haven’t played in a long time, so that’s my biggest concern. I don’t really know what to expect.”

San Antonio did not make silly mistakes or ill-timed turnovers, coming through in spurts rather than a steady flow of basketball purity which tends to be their strength.

One of those spurts came in the fourth quarter, and it would prove to be just what the Spurs needed to escape with a huge victory.

Here are some of the factors outlined prior to the game and how they eventually played out as the Spurs take control of this series with an all-important Game 1 win.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: There has been lots of talk about Big Three and legacies for both San Antonio and Miami leading up to tonight’s game. But like most playoff series, often it’s role players that decide who comes away victorious. For the Spurs, keep an eye on Danny Green. For Miami, former Celtic Ray Allen could be a difference-maker as well.

WHAT WE SAW: Green’s shooting was huge for San Antonio, especially the fourth quarter 3-pointer that put the Spurs ahead by seven points – their largest lead of the second half. Meanwhile, Allen did his part to keep the Heat in the game, nailing three consecutive free throws late in the game that made it a one-possession contest before finishing with 13 points.

MATCHUP TO WATCH: Tony Parker vs Mario Chalmers: No Heat player catches for heat (pun totally intended) for the most minor transgressions, than Chalmers. But him getting torched by Parker tonight is understandable. He has been doing throughout the playoffs against better point guards.

WHAT WE SAW: Chalmers did about as good a job on him as anyone has in the playoffs, but it wasn’t good enough to keep Parker from being the one player that Miami consistently struggled with defending. Parker finished with 21 points and six assists while Chalmers had eight points while missing seven of his 10 shot attempts.

PLAYER TO WATCH:  Health issues have limited Dwyane Wade’s effectiveness, but Chris Bosh? He has no excuse. After a regular season in which he was so much better than he was given credit for being, Bosh has become a wild card of sorts that no one has any idea of what to expect.

WHAT WE SAW: The player known as Flash had a flashback stretch in the second quarter with baskets on three consecutive possessions. He finished with 17 points on 7-for-15 shooting.

STAT TO TRACK: Miami lacking a true inside presence defensively hurt them in their series with Indiana, and it will likely be an even bigger factor against San Antonio which ranks in the top 10 in points in the paint. Leading the inside scoring barrage for the Spurs is Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter, along with Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili’s dribble penetration for lay-ups and floaters.

WHAT WE SAW: Miami did not allow the Spurs to get too crazy with points in the paint, limiting San Antonio to 40 points in the paint while scoring 34 of their own.

What will happen in Game 2? Are the Miami HEAT feeling the HEAT? We will see come Sunday, 1pm (ET) on ABC. Be sure not to miss it!
