Novak Djokovic won a gruelling contest against Juan Martin Del Potro in five sets in the longest ever Wimbledon semi-final.
The top seed, was taken to the final set by a determined performance from Argentinean eighth seed Del Potro which finished 7-5 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (6-8) 6-3. It was the perfect finish to a great week of tennis on centre court for both the competitors after Del Potro’s win over David Ferrer. The match was the longest semi final in Wimbledon history, overtaking Boris Becker’s win over Ivan Llendl which lasted four hours and five minutes, the match lasting a total of four hours and forty four minutes.
Djokovic broke Del Potro’s serve in the first set to win 7-5 and then Del Potro replied in similar style, taking the second 6-4. The third set was taken into a tie-break, Djokovic romping to a 7-2 win. Djokovic seemed all set to win in four sets, but a spirited performance from the eigth seed meant that Djokovic just could not finish him off and lost the set on a tie break, 8-6. Del Potro, though, was broken and exhausted in the fifth and never gave up, but it was the number one seed’s day, and Novak Djokovic will face the winner of Andy Murray and Jerzy Janowicz.
“It was one of my best matches I’ve been a part of, one of the most exciting. It was so close. I could not separate us, apart from when I was 2-1 up and a break up, and I dropped serve. That’s why he’s a Grand Slam champion. He came up with some top shots. I didn’t think I was wrong to be aggressive, but credit to him.”, said Djokovic.
