World Cup Final, World Cup Game #64

Rio de Janeiro was raucous and poised for an epic culmination to an epic World Cup tournament. Passion was brimming as both sets of teams prepared to seize a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Joachim Löw’s side set out much more positively for the opening minutes. Showing promise with an early free-kick, there was plenty of choice at their disposal – five to be frank stepping up, but it was carelessly wasted.

In what would be a hit-and-miss opening 45 minutes for Gonzalo Higuain, he dragged his shot well wide when Argentina first explored their attacking third. Just a few minutes later, Lionel Messi’s surging run saw him overtake Mats Hummels, but his cross was anxiously beat away by Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Ezequiel Lavezzi was also able to exploit numerous areas in the patchy German opening. His two crosses in the first ten minutes were again safely defused.

With Sami Khedira suffering an injury hours prior to the kick-off, Christoph Kramer replaced him in the starting XI as he made his first competitive start. Suffering a huge collision and picking up an injury he had to make way eventually following half-an-hour.

Argentina erupted into euphoria – but only momentarily, as Higuain’s shot was deemed offside. A brilliant ball from the right let him guide it through Neuer, but after running towards the crowd the Argentinian front-man discovered the offside flag was waving.

André Schürrle almost made an instant impact after Muller rolled towards him in the corner of the box. Romero kept it out.

Back on the other end, a reinvigorated Messi, despite calls of suffering fatigue, broke through the right flank and this time his chipped attempt was swept off the line by a steadfast Jerome Boateng.

Germany would ultimately finish an open first-half the strongest. Benedikt Höwedes headed strongly from Kroos’ late corner, but it rattled the post. Muller attempted to guide in the rebound but it was offside. Minutes earlier, Muller’s troubling cross just refracted out and Romero grasped comfortably.

Argentine’s coach Sabella looked to shift up the tactics from the outset of the second period, replacing Lavezzi with Aguero. Aguero would break away from kickoff to Messi, but Germany dealt and got rid of the problem.

Looking much more livelier, Argentina had Germany on the backfoot for the first five minutes, with Higuain offside crucially before Messi cut through only to drag his shot away from goal.

As the sun set in Rio, the pace would pick up. Manuel Neuer soon flattened Higuain when contesting for the ball, physicality was cinematic like the scenes around the wonder of the World.

Late defending kept Argentina going through with crucial tackles outside the box by Schweinsteiger. Then, Klose bowed out of his record-breaking World Cup tenure as he was replaced by Gotze.

Three minutes of additional time wouldn’t cut it, either. We were bound for extra-time. 30 more minutes of an amazing World Cup.

André Schürrle infiltrated into the box around half-a-minute into extra-time but his shot was straight at Romero. A fast-paced start to extra time saw Argentina’s counter wither in immediate response.

An end-to-end first five minutes would see both defences hold up, looking solid and in the times when they didn’t fully get the job done, Neuer and Romero were more than reliable.

Palacio had a frustrating first extra-time period. His lack of control saw Argentina’s break slow down before he missed a huge chance to etch his name in Argentinian history when he broke through again – only for his heavy touch forcing him to flick over, going wide.

Another fifteen minutes strolled by, it was loud, it was tense and it was goalless.

Mario Gotze’s stoppage time strike was the difference, though, as Andre Schurrle sprinted down the left, delivering the cross for him to chest and guide it past Romero.

Lionel Messi’s late free-kick went over, the time ticked.

The final whistle blew.

The World Cup was over.

Germany were Champions

Lionel Messi Steps Away From Greatest of All Time?

Lionel Messi is one of football’s greats, there’s no doubt about it. He will lead Argentina into the Maracanã for the World Cup final showdown on Sunday, with a chance to forever etch his name atop greats for both club and country.

BY NISAR KHAN

One big chance beckons in Rio. GETTY

Let’s be clear – Lionel Messi is the best player in the World right now and barring a few patches scattered here and there, it’s been like that for some four years or so. International football though has proved a vexatious obstacle for the magician to really reach the pinnacle of everyone’s rankings.

Four straight years of Ballan d’Or wins was no surprise – he really is that good. We have had our glimpses of Messi’s sublimity making an appearance in the blue-and-white stripe, but not his renowned, prolific self that we see in the La Liga and Europe.

Despite his four consecutive man-of-the-match awards in Argentina’s game, there was still something missing. One piece of footballing wizardry can turn the game around – that is what makes him so special and an incomparable talent.

Argentina haven’t exactly blitzed through to the final either – slender wins in the knockout stage have made many-a-fan question the credibility of La Albiceleste against the ruthless German wrecking machine.

All eyes will be on Messi in the Maracanã. Possibly the greatest stadium in the continent, Rio de Janiero’s footballing palace is the perfect moment for Messi to etch a legacy that will never be forgotten.

It’s a given that Messi will forever be a Barcelona legend – he made that clear around three years ago. Still though, his slow-burning country presence has catalysed the criticism – and trust me, it’s very hard to criticise Messi.

Messi is up there with the all-time greats – but for him to take that step further leading his country to an unprecedented World Cup triumph in Brazil will be phenomenal – that alone, would class him as a great. The late, great Alfredo Di Stefano may be an example – he never braced the World Cup, yet was defined a great. Messi can eclipse this with his World Cup victory.

The magnitude is magnified on Messi in the Maracana. Whereas Germany have a feast of top-class talent with numerous scoring and assist outputs, Lionel Messi is miles ahead as Argentina’s key man, prompting calls of a “One man team” for four-time Ballan d’Or winner.

The stage is set. The World awaits. Lionel Messi’s chance to be named the greatest player of all time hangs in the balance. Should he thwart the incredible Germans, he’ll be more than deserving of the accolade.

Kick-off: 9pm BST / 4pm ET
Arena Corinthians, São Paulo
Semi-Final, World Cup Game #62

In a cloudy atmosphere in São Paulo, the passionate football fans were awaiting a highly anticipated match-up in this Semi-Final clash. The winners go on to meet Germany in the final.

The opening 10 minutes were very even as both theams were trying to hold on to possession and slowly break the opposition down. Javier Mascherano was seen being very tight especially with Robben to stop the Dutchman getting in on the defence.

A low, fast free kick from Lionel Messi is saved by Jasper Cillessen.

Nearly 20 minutes and no major chances were created but Argentina were just getting forward a bit more with Higuain, Lavezzi and Perez trying hard to create chances and break through the Netherlands defence.

Argentina had a good shape when attacking and especially defending as they weren’t allowing Van Persie and Robben run at them or get any decent shots on goal. Still mostly even though.

Argentina fired a corner in and it was centre back Garay who got on the end of it but he put just a bit too much on the header and went over the bar. Good corner, it beat most defenders.

Javier Mascherano suffers a knock to the head and may of lost a few seconds of conciousness but he opted to stay on.

Half an hour in and no real chances were created. Garay’s header was probably the most threatning of the game and for Argentina. Nothing really for Netherlands to shout about as they only put away one shot, that being Sneijder’s which was put wide.

15 minutes after half time and a good and a good run and cross from Lavezzi meets the head of Gonzalo Higuain but the Napoli striker was unable to get full contact on the ball and guide it into the goal.

Another 15 minutes after that and Higuain had another good chance. A low, dangerous cross fell to him but he clipped the ball against the side netting. Argentina looking most likely to take the lead.

Netherlands were trying hard to create chances as Arjien Robben was running down the left flank but still nothing was that good enough to scrape a goal past the Argentinians.

Just a few minutes from time and Robben had a huge chance to steal it as the Bayern Munich man dribbled through into the box only to be denied by a sensational sliding tackle from Javier Mascherano. Best chance of the game.

The full 90 minutes were played and nothing could sepererate the two teams. Extra Time was needed.

Arijen Robben sweetly struck a shot on target but it went right into the grasp of Romero.

Argentina’s best chance came when a lovely chip over the Netherlands defence saw Rodriguez in on goal. He tried heading past the keeper but Cillessen kept it out.

Netherlands were forward again and a Dirk Kuyt strike was hit with power but was deflected.

Extra Time was played and still nothing could separate the teams. Penalties it missed

Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder missed their penalties, with Argentina scoring all theirs. For the match point, Maxi Rodriguez smashed his away to send Argentina through to the final!

Match breakdown

Man of the Match: Javier Mascherano, he made sensational, match saving tackles
Flop of the Match: Airjen Robben fails to put away a great chance when in or goal.
Possession: Netherlands 53%, Argentina 47%
Shots: Netherlands 7, Argentina 8

Argentina defence too strong and tight for Netherlands
A strong and tight Argentinian defence as Van Persie, Robben were unable to really test them.

Netherlands will now face the might challenge of Germany in the final.

After a dullish match, with late penalty drama, who do you think will win the final – Germany or Argentina?

Higuain Strike Fires Argentina Through to Semi Finals

A superb strike from Gonzalo Higuain inside 10 minutes was enough for Argentina to edge past Belgium in a hard-fought quarter final showdown in Brazília.

Saturday 5 July 2014
Kick-off: 5pm BST / 12pm ET
Estádio Nacional de Brasilia, Brasília
Quarter Final, World Cup Game #59

As the sun glared down in Brazília, a highly anticipated quarter final match between Argentina and Belgium was apon us.

Just 7 minutes in and the Argentinians struck. Some great play in midfield and the ball fell to Gonzalo Higuain and the Napoli striker turned and speared it right into the bottom left hand corner. A fantastic strike on the turn draws Argentina first blood in this quarter final clash.

A few chances were created as Angel Di Maria and Kevin De Bruyne came close for their respective teams but both efforts were saved.

Kevin Mirallas put a fast moving header just past the post. Good chance for Belgium but they still trail.

After being fouled, Lionel Messi won a free kick just outside the penalty area.

After a magnificent run which saw Vincent Kompany left for dead, Gonzalo Higuain found himself in on goal with Belgian keeper, Courtois. The Napoli striker was looking to double his goal count and Argentina’s lead but he thumped the ball right off the cross bar and out. Belgium were helpless at this point, they are very lucky not to be 2-0 down.

A chance falls for Belgium after another great cross from Jon Vertonghen sees Manchester United midfielder Maroune Fellaini head the ball over the cross bar. Should have done better there, good chance for Belgium which haven’t come easily in this game.

Full time and Argentina’s victory marks an end to Belgium’s World Cup campaign. Many thought they were the dark horses but instead it’s the Argentinians who make a statement and prove they could well go on to win the 2014 World Cup.

Match breakdown

Man of the Match: Gonzalo Higuain after he fires Argentina through to the Semis.
Flop of the Match: Maroune Fellaini fails to put a header on target after a great cross.
Possession: ARG 51% – 49% BEL
Shots: ARG 8 – BEL 10.

Belgium needed more pace down flanks.

The Belgians just lacked pace and range down the wings as the strikers were unable to get the ball in dangerous areas to really test Argentina’s defence and goalkeeper.

Belgium lack killer instinct and needed energy as Argentina edge past the dark horses.

After a good team performance from Argentina sees them through, are they good enough to go all the way and win World Cup glory?

Argentina Scrape Past Swiss in Extra-Time

Argentina were forced to extra-time in São Paulo as Di Maria’s 118th minute goal was enough to keep Switzerland at bay, and book the South Americans a place in the Quarter-Finals.

Argentina 1 – 0 Switzerland
Angel Di Maria (118′)
Tuesday 1 July 2014
Kick-off: 5pm BST / 12pm ET
Arena Corinthians, São Paulo
Round of 16, World Cup Game #55

A glorious sunny afternoon wouldn’t really reflect the actual game, considering the lack of action and true creativity on the latter thirds of the pitch. Possession control and sustainment was unusually poor from the Argentines, with Di Maria’s 51 turnovers in possession forthcoming as the prime example.

Switzerland had little to do for the opening half-an-hour of play, although they would find their work load increasing slowly as play continued. Garay’s glancing header didn’t have enough to turn in Di Maria’s corner, but they were vital signs of improvement.

Josip Drmic was left dismayed after he squandered Switzerland’s golden chance of the first period. Xherdan Shaqiri threaded through a troubling ball, allowing Drmic to break away. He audaciously attempted a chip that fell ruggedly into the hands of a grateful Romero.

A big bulk of the game saw little action and was plagued with simple, frustrating errors. Di Maria lost possession (many more times than once), interceptions were made and little urgency was shown by either side, but most particularly Argentina, who couldn’t conjure up anything out of the ordinary.

Argentina however, made some key advances as they spotted a whining in the energy input from the Swiss. Keeper Benaglio was forced into action as he pushed away Higuain’s attempt. Messi came close soon after as Argentina looked to hit their optimum gear. Weird-hairdo and all, Palacio then tested the keeper but it was still deadlocked with 15 minutes left of regulation.

Extra-time was allocated after finishing goalless. Argentina were far from themselves, likewise with 30 more minutes. The first 15 of those followed the similar, edgy and untidy pattern.

An exhausted Lionel Messi would just be able to get back onto his feet for the final fifteen minutes, but he was exhausted. Profoundly so, he would pull out the magic to get his way through the defence and set up Angel Di Maria to slot it past Benaglio.

Shaqiri had the final kick of the game from a free-kick on the edge of the box, but it went straight at the wall and the game came to an end.

Argentina make the Quarter-Finals but they know that they have a lot of work to do for the upcoming fixture if they wish for their dream of a Brazilian triumph to stay alive.

Argentina Edge Past Nigeria To Top Group F

Wednesday June 25 2014
Kick-off: 5pm BST (UK time)
Estádio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre
Group F, World Cup Game #42

Argentina defeated Nigeria in a thriller to collect their final points of Group F. Two early goals for each team scored by Argentina’s Messi and Nigeria’s Musa set the game on a fiery start. Argentina put together a more compact performance for the rest of the half. Nigeria also further tested their weak link, the defense, but it held up.

Nigerian goal-keeper Victor Enyeama came up huge and made some great saves as always. Enyeama’s effort to stop a free-kick by Messi was purely amazing as he delivered great save, but a second dead ball right before half time killed his net, and gave the Albiceleste a half time lead over the Eagles.

The start of the second half was equally as thrilling, as Musa yet again, followed Messi on the score sheet. With the game tied 2-2, Marcos Rojo would score Argentina’s game winner with his knee, from a beautifully delivered corner.

More exciting action followed, even without star man and Lionel Messi, who was simply amazing, on the pitch. Other stand-out players for Argentina included Ezequiel Lavezzi who came on earlier for Kun Aguero. Lavezzi shined and the Albiceleste attack looked brighter. Angel Di Maria also shined, especially with his extremely accurate shots, but unfortunately, Eagles GK Enyeama kept them all out. He made ten saves on the night, which was the most in a single World Cup game so far.

Argentina put together a much better performance than their two precious matches, but still have a lot of room for improvement before dreaming of the title. Going into the next round, Nigeria will have to be more compact in midfield and defense for a chance at a deeper run. But after yet another absolute cracker of a match in this World Cup, Argentina and Nigeria both make it out of Group F, and await their opponents from Group E.

Messi Scores Stoppage Time Winner to Overhaul Iran Resistance

Argentina 1 – 0 Iran
Lionel Messi (91′)
Saturday 21 June 2014
5pm BST (UK time)
Estádio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte
Group F, World Cup Game #27

Iran keeper Maghighi had to make a top quality save just twelve minutes in to deny Gonzalo Higuain, put through by Gago and saved well. It was the first chance from a riveting start from the South Americans, troubling Iran and forcing them to reinforce an array of numbers behind the ball.

Satisfaction, in brief, was felt by Iran who held up against the onslaught. Argentina’s counter-attack from a corner kick was a stern warning of their sheer attacking power.

Alireza Haghighi was forced into action later on to deny Sergio Aguero. An excellent play to manoeuvre through the packed defensive setup saw the Man City man curl it towards goal, only to be denied well. Minutes later, Marcos Rojo squandered a chance to head Argentina in front.

Iran became more permeable for Argentina, but still they couldn’t find anything. Di Maria was cut out and Messi was stopped in his tracks. Messi’s free-kick shook some hearts for Iran but beat the bar, as well as the keeper.

There was around ten minutes left of the half and, for all their efforts, Argentina were still on level and goalless terms with Iran. Messi picked out Garay with a prompting ball but he couldn’t find a goalscoring header to compliment it.

Iran’s closest chance came through Hosseini, whose header from a corer kick went over. Argentina could very well have been down.

Frustration was abundant for Argentina as they made their way off the pitch. Iran breathed sighs of relief and somewhat disbelief as they kept on level terms. Argentina had been stuck with the barrage of red Iran shirts – they couldn’t get through or test enough. Messi was limited to his magic too as they had numbers around him. Game plans were in need of altering.

It was Iran who were quicker out of the blocks for the second. Reza Ghoochannejhad’s header was denied by Romero’s save after Iran broke away and got a cross off. Soon after, Dejagah had a viable penalty appeal when he believed he was impeded by Zabaleta. Iran were beginning to enjoy the game.

Argentina sent off some alarm bells though as Messi was free to run down and get a shot off, but it went stray of the post.

Things were frantic, things were slightly more open and things were frustrating for both.

Argentina’s chances, including a free-kick and headers, all withered to little as stoppage time was approached. Palacio could have buried it with a header but missed.

Then, Reza Ghoochannejhad had another huge chance, breaking down the left but blasted it straight at Romero.

Four minutes of stoppage time were issued.

In the first, Lionel Messi would diffuse all frustrations.

Touching it to his left, he curled it past Haghighi’s reach and scored a terrific goal for the winner.

Finally, Iran were broken. It took over 90 minutes.

Match breakdown

Man of the Match: Lionel Messi
Flop of the Match: Reza Ghoochannejhad
Possession: Argentina 70% – 30% Iran
Shots: Argentina 8 – 4 Iran

Iran Pride
Iran have nothing to be ashamed of with an incredible effort, gutted for them.

Learning Curve
Argentina had to dig deep through frustration and doubt to get the winner.

Argentina qualify for the second round. Magical from Messi.

It took some doing to undo the Iranians. It’s Messi’s day, can he lead Argentina further in Brazil?

Lionel Messi Leads Argentine Escape From Bosnia

Argentina 2 – 1 Bosnia-Herzegovina
“(S. Kolasinac OG ‘3)” “(L. Messi ’65)” “(V. Ibisevic ’85)”
Man of the match: Lionel Messi
Possession: Argentina 56% – 44% Bosnia & Herzegovina
Sunday 14 June 2014
11pm BST (UK time)
Estádio Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro
Group F, World Cup Game #11

The Argentina squad picked up 3 points in it’s World Cup opener at the Maracanã. An extextremely early (‘3) own from Bosnia-Herzegovina player Kolasinac [he was fantastic aftafterwards] from a FK-set piece due to Argentina’s pressing.

The own goal however flipped the game plan as the Bosnian Dragons attacked and greatly pressured the Albiceleste’s questioned defense and their goal keeper, Romero. The Albiceleste defense let up a few times, but Romero handled business. By the time Argentina gathered composure in attack, the second half bell sounded.

Early in the second half, the story was the same. Bosnia fought for an eequaliser, but Argentina’s attack was pushing, creating chances, but no goals. Argentina had the pospossessio,. in their favor, but Bosnia was much more efficient of their share of the Brazuca. Then, he arrived.

With worrying faces from Argentina supporters, Alejandro Sabella’s captain eased their souls with a magisterial Golazo! Lionel Messi kept the chances coming, but with some fuel from frustration, the artful dodger dribbled ahead, laid it off for his teammate who served it back to him. After another brief dribble, he buried the ball at the back of the net, and his celebration of his second ever World Cup goal showed his passion for those Albiceleste colors. Bosnia’s Ibisevic rattled a late goal, but it was not enough.

Both sides showed positive signs, but also the need to improve.

The match also featured the return of Argentine stricker Gonzalo Higuaín, whom the Albiceleste hope they can use to end their World Cup campaign exactly where it began, at the Maracanã

Verdict

“I expect Argentina to be very attacking and open in their group games and top the group with relative ease. From there, they will most likely face Switzerland or France. I reckon their “home” advantage will help them past a sterner challenge in the Last 16 but they could fall short to Germany in the last 8, Germany’s attacking jewels will be too much for Argentina’s suspect defence.”
