Premier League Easter Sunday: Liverpool Stand Against Late Norwich Onslaught, Arsenal & Everton Keep Up Race For Fourth

BY NISAR KHAN

A delightful offering of Easter Sunday Premier League football saw Liverpool go five points clear at the top with a win over Norwich, while Arsenal won at Hull and Everton caused misery for Moyes to keep up the pressure on one another in the race for the coveted fourth spot.

Easter Sunday was marked with a terrific triple-header of Premier League football, that featured fresh developments in the battle for fourth place, and a big gap opened at the top – all hand-in-hand with significant implications in the relegation battle.

Following a day of penalties in the Premier League the day prior, which saw Chelsea stunned at the Bridge by Sunderland, Tottenham thump Fulham and Crystal Palace and Swansea were victors, there were advantages to be seized upon along with trepidation to avoid.

Liverpool Defy Late Norwich Surge At Carrow Road

Score: Norwich 2 – 3 Liverpool
Goalscorers: Raheem Sterling (4′, 62′), Luis Suarez (11′), Gary Hooper (54′), Robert Snodgrass (77′)
Location: Carrow Road, Norwich, England.
Time: Sunday 20th April 2014, 12:00pm
Attendance: 26,857
Man of the Match: Raheem Sterling

The Reds extended their blitzing league form to an 11-game win streak after holding on against the tide of a late onslaught from hosts Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Their victory, aided by Raheem Sterling’s standout performance, put them five points clear at the top of the league following Chelsea’s loss to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge the day prior.

Nineteen-year-old Raheem Sterling got in on the act as early as the fourth minute with a thunderous long-range strike leaving keeper Ruddy hopeless.

As Liverpool marched on and took a firm grasp of the game, the goalscorer Raheem Sterling would set up his Uruguayan teammate Luis Suarez for the second. A curling, low ball was slotted in the path of the striker, allowing him to guide it in the bottom right corner.

However, Liverpool seemed to slack slightly following the extension of the lead. Complacency may have been at fault for the Reds as they sat back and passed the ball around leaving the Canaries agitated.

While Liverpool may have been comfortably leading during the interval, Norwich had something to represent for their pressure in the second half, as Gary Hooper capitalized on keeper Simon Mignolet’s error. The Belgian keeper was poor in his effort to punch the ball to safety, allowing Hooper to score at ease and put Norwich back into contention.

Around eight minutes later, Raheem Sterling completed his magnificent duo of goals where he displayed great composure and maturity to strike at goal. After running through the central area, the option to Luis Suarez faded, so Raheem Sterling charged towards Ruddy, with his shot deflecting off the keeper and fortunately trickling into goal.

Again, though, Liverpool were not in for a comfortable culmination. Robert Snodgrass made sure of it with a headed goal in the 77th minute to put his side at reach of the illusive point.

Liverpool managed to hold on, after Mignolet saved Van Wolfswinkel’s header, and secured their eleventh straight league win, going five points clear at the top.

Analysis & Comment

Yet another thrilling game of football, from the neutral perspective at least.

Liverpool have the habit of nervy finishes to the game as they progress to a anxious and marginal victories time and time again. Fortunately for the Reds though, none have proved too costly, yet.

With three games remaining, Liverpool have opened up a crucial gap at the top of the table, with Sunderland beating Chelsea presenting itself as an absolute gift to Liverpool’s title surge.

A problem for Liverpool could come back to bite them. In the game they complacently sat back and attempted to drown out the Canaries – Liverpool could have very well beat themselves.

Raheem Sterling is Man of the Match with a marquee performance. Over the course of the season he has matured by great lengths to secure a stable position in the starting XI. His first goal was sublime while his second may have been gifted some fortune, though he still was clinical in taking the chance. Not to mention, his assist to Luis Suarez was mastering a difficult ball – artistry. He continues to improve game by game.

Norwich put up a good showing but got nothing from it. Facing a daunting conclusion to their season, they’ll hope for more performances of the same, but ones which will get them points to edge safety in a heated relegation battle.

Podolski On Form As Gunners Tame Tigers

Score: Hull City 0 – 3 Arsenal
Goalscorers: Aaron Ramsey (31′), Lukas Podolski (45′, 54′)
Location: KC Stadium, Hull, England.
Time: Sunday 20th April 2014, 2:05pm
Attendance: 24,762
Man of the Match: Lukas Podolski

Lukas Podolski scored twice as Arsenal eased past Hull at the KC Stadium to maintain control of the race for Champions League football.

Arsenal comfortably passed the ball around the pitch in search of a switch to flamboyant football, as Hull City pressed forward. Shane Long struck fright early for the Gunners, alas in vein though as his shot fizzed over the bar.

After half-an-hour, Arsenal would be leading at the hands of Aaron Ramsey. The Welshman put an emphatic exclamation mark on his return beating keeper Steve Harper to cap off a sublime passing build-up.

Then, on the brink of half-time, the German would get in on the act with a terrific volley that left the Tigers out of it going into the break. A lofted ball to Ramsey was chested into the path of the German, lashing at it with the perfect balance of power and accuracy.

Nine minutes into the second half and any small hopes of Hull’s comeback were tarnished. Lukas Podolski got his second goal after Ramsey’s blistering shot was saved, allowing the German to tap in to an open goal.

Olivier Giroud, who picked up a slight knock ruling him out for a few moments, hit the crossbar after the wind delayed the ball from reaching goalkeeper Steve Harper. The Frenchman slid to get the ball that went up and hit the crossbar, rebounding out to Tigers’ relief.

Speaking of wind, it was exactly that which delayed the game just a few minutes in. Around a dozen advertising boards were blown onto the pitch from the wind, and the players carried them off before playing again. When you think you’ve seen it all…

Hull City hit the bar on one occasion, and that would be the closest they would come after Arsenal eased past them, increasing their woes while the Gunners are edging closer to securing more Champions League football.

The two teams will meet again at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 17th May 2014 for the FA Cup Final.

Analysis & Comment

While Hull may not have taken away anything in points from the game, there was plenty of lessons for the Tigers going into their FA Cup final meeting – they’ll be hoping, though, that they will be safe when the season closes a week prior.

One thing to change maybe is the two forwards. It was clear throughout the duration of the match that a lot of gaps were exposed, allowing the Gunners to move at will and set up for goals like Aaron Ramsey’s opener – speaking of Ramsey, what a way to return, Arsenal will definitely value his presence.

Hull City really didn’t get much of a shout throughout the one-sided contest. Arsenal, looking sharp and upbeat made a dominant statement for fourth place intentions.

Lukas Podolski has emerged as the solution, possibly, for Arsenal to find more goals like they did against Hull City. He’s been on great form, and should Giroud follow the same, Arsenal could ease to fourth. You can’t forget Ramsey either, whose contributions will no doubt be vital.

On a day where they were mathematically ruled out of winning the title, Arsenal were determined in their pursuit to make something of a season – a season which has seen them turn a sharp corner from a prosperous start at the top to battling for Champions League football.

Toffees Spoil Moyes’ Goodison Return

Score: Everton 2 – 0 Manchester United
Goalscorers: Leighton Baines (38′ penalty), Kevin Mirallas (43′)
Location: Goodison Park, Liverpool, England.
Time: Sunday 20th April 2014, 4:10pm
Attendance: 39,436
Man of the Match: Kevin Mirallas

Everton spoiled David Moyes’ return to Goodison Park with an impressive 2 – 0 win over Manchester United to keep up the race for fourth place.

The Toffees made a good response to the game prior, which saw Arsenal win at Hull.

Leighton Baines scored the opener in the 38th minute from the penalty spot, after Phil Jones handballed Romelu Lukaku’s shot in the box.

Kevin Mirallas extended the lead five minutes later after Seamus Coleman put the Belgian through to fire past David De Gea.

Although having plenty of possession, Moyes side were far too poor, lacking creativity and urgency.

One fan, dressed as the Grim Reaper in the stands, proved an illustrious image for the Scots’ possible future after another devastating blow to his side.

Manchester United’s loss meant it is now mathematically possible for Champions League qualification next year.

Analysis & Comment

Its another tough blow for Manchester United. The demise from glory days continues, and its misery for Moyes at Goodison Park.

The Red Devils really looked short of motivation, a sense of dejection seemed to cloud their hopes throughout the game.

Manchester United eagerly await the final day of the season so they can rebuild and rejuvenate after a dreadful season.

Everton move within one point of Arsenal (as of 20/04/2014 DD/MM/YYYY) to keep up the pressure as they squeeze for Champions League football.

Arsenal Favorites For Fourth After Big Win Over Hammers

BY NISAR KHAN

Arsenal picked up a win of huge proportions over West Ham at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, in a win that has put the Gunners in the driver’s seat for the race for fourth place.

Lukas Podolski scored a double, while Olivier Giroud added another in Arsenal’s important victory over West Ham at the Emirates on Tuesday. The Gunners came from behind to pick up the victory that has put them back in the Top Four.

Arsenal are favorites over Everton for Champions League football simply because of their games remaining. Arsenal’s final four league games are Hull (A), Newcastle (H), West Brom (H) and Norwich (A), while Everton still have reserved fixtures with Manchester United, Manchester City and Southampton.

After the vital win over the Hammers, Arsenal are back on a roll they need to tackle this winnable schedule. The Gunners have seen top players return too, and with them hitting form it will make a pivotal difference.

The forgone conclusion is also based on Arsenal’s previous performances over sides of that caliber. After all, picking up wins over them is what helped them climb to the top of the league for the longest amount of days this season.

Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski, speaking to Sky Sports in their post match interviews, pointed out the importance of the date of the FA Cup final. It’s after the league campaign is finished, leaving the Gunners’ Champions League hopes at the centre-piece of their focus.

Everton, despite being on a good run, can’t rely on that alone for the tough games. Manchester City is the biggest obstacle on their road – while Man United and Southampton will be far from easy meetings, Everton’s form and recent performances prove they are capable.

Then again, Arsenal are under most pressure, surely? With much easier games putting the fourth spot in their favor, only razor-close-to-maximum will be tolerated.

Described as a “fan-mandatory last resort” in one of my previous columns, the FA Cup at the end of the season will prove the summit-definer of Arsenal’s season, but knowing Wenger and his men, they’ll want to stay in their comfort zone by securing fourth, then going into the Wembley Final under much less pressure.

Players like Mesut Ozil, whose form has yet to aid Arsenal, will need to make a contribution, just like his German compatriot did against West Ham as he added a double in their home win.

Arsenal, although being under more pressure, should surely be able to get through the final four games unfazed while some odds are against the Toffees, if not, the FA Cup may not be enough to satisfy the club.

Everton Decimate Gunners At Goodison, Liverpool Hold Tight To Shut Out Hammers

BY NISAR KHAN

Everton catapulted themselves right back into contention for fourth place as they thrashed Arsenal at Goodison Park while Liverpool picked up an anxious away win over West Ham in a game that featured controversial decisions in Sunday’s Premier League double-header.

The Merseyside teams made significant advances in their respective races for either the title or Champions League football.

In the first of two games featured on the Super Sunday schedule, Everton ran riot in an Arsenal decimation at Goodison Park.

Arsenal, who have now dropped 10 points out of a possible 12 in their four previous games, were a recipient of Everton’s sweet retribution – which saw the Gunners beat them 4 – 1 in the FA Cup Quarterfinal.

It would be a much different story to the events that occurred in the Emirates around a month ago, with Steven Naismith altering the course of events early when he pounced on Lukaku’s saved shot to hit home.

After twenty more minutes of pressing and an uncomfortable spell for the visitors, Romelu Lukaku put his side two goals to the good with a low-fired shot past Szczęsny after dribbling past the watchful Arsenal players.

Video: Arsene Wenger’s post-match interview following Arsenal’s loss to Everton YOUTUBE / BBC SPORT

Mikel Arteta – unsurprisingly booed throughout the match – would conceded the third for Arsenal in the form of an own goal after one hour of play. The own goal was forced from terrific work by Kevin Mirallas as he pressurized the Spaniard into the own goal.

Another humiliating defeat down Merseyside spells more trouble for Arsenal. #WengerOut hashtags were prominent around Twitter. Frustration is clear for all to see as Arsenal went from battling at the top to fourth in the turn of the new year.

Everton made their intentions clear – Champions League football. Coming in with a hot run of form from March, they are going to put Arsenal in a very uncomfortable situation and even jeopardize Arsene Wenger’s record of always finishing in the top four.

Liverpool survived an anxious onslaught to end the game at Upton Park as they secured a mind-boggling ninth consecutive league win, putting them back at the top of the league after Chelsea topped it with a win over Stoke City the day prior.

The majority of the first half was goalless as the hosts kept them at bay and made for a frustrating outing for Liverpool, who had no clear-cut chances in the first half, that was until the late stages.

The general consensus of the penalty was blatant, as Luis Suarez’s touch was indeed handballed by the defender whom apologized straight after. Then up stepped the skipper, who remained composed as he slotted home with ease.

However, Guy Demel would equalize merely minutes later in controversial fashion. Simon Mignolet, who appeared to have been hit in the face by Andy Carroll mid-air, dropped the ball from the cross – falling to Guy Demel to score his first goal for the Hammers.

You be the judge.

Celebrations were paused for the home side with the linesman flagging. After a hot dispute with the referee, the goal was ruled legal and West Ham had equalized. As the first-half drew to a close in the play after, Liverpool were irate as they argued their cause to the referee.

As some called it “poetic justice”, Steven Gerrard scored his 50th penalty for the Reds when John Flanagan was taken down by Jaaskaleinen in another controversial ruling. “Two wrongs don’t make a right”, Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler described after the event, which lead too a successful penalty scored from the skipper.

West Ham’s onslaught was insufficient with its goal of equalizing, but it did cause Liverpool a lot of discomfort as they anxiously regained top spot in the league.

Comment & Analysis: Controversial Calls And Manager Mistrust

Controversy no doubt surrounded the West Ham vs. Liverpool fixture. Considering I’m a Liverpool fan I’d rather not comment on the calls to duck accusations of bias. However, that could prove dividend for Liverpool in the title race. I’ll just put it as Martin Tyler did, “two wrongs don’t make a right”.

As for Arsenal, it has just been a demise from Premier League contention. The only positive they can take is that they have no tough sides to follow in the run-up to the end of the season, although this does increase pressure on them to get close to maximum points to close out their campaign.

Everton, on some hot form right now, are going to really push Arsenal in the challenge for fourth place meaning Wenger will need to get his players attitude sorted.

You could see the gulf in contrast between the efforts of both sides. Everton were working their socks off for their gaffer while Wenger’s men’s attitude were even criticized by Wenger himself. This could be key in the race for fourth.

When all things were looking bright, when Arsenal got an incredible headstart to the season, people started to believe. Things have changed so fast that sees them facing more criticism. FA Cup and fourth place is now a must.

A terrific Sunday in the Premier League as the Merseyside teams stand tall and have increased the probability of both teams finishing in the top four.

Arsenal Hold City Even, FA Cup And Premier League Chances

Football

BY @IMWITHLESNAR

Everybody thought City would make it a Big win like last time out, but The Gunners kept up a 1-1 draw with title challengers, Manchester City. The City goal came from David Silva and the Arsenal Goal came from Mathieu Flamini with 20 minutes to go.

The question is now can Arsenal, challenge for the title after their latest run of, (WLWLDD) can Arsenal still be the favorites in 2014’with 6 games to go.

Arsenal have got a chance to win the FA Cup because they have got Wigan in the semi finals at Wembley and the other match is Hull City vs Sheffield Utd in two weeks, so can Arsenal win the FA Cup?

FA Cup Has Become Fan-Mandatory Last Resort For Arsenal, But Have The Gunners Been Written Off Too Quickly?

Arsenal are undoubtedly the favourites in the FA Cup and after their title hopes were dealt a huge blow in a humiliating 6 – 0 loss to Chelsea, the cup has become a must-win for the Gunners. However, there could be light at the end of the tunnel in another form also.

Distraught: Arsene Wenger’s 1000th game in charge of Arsenal was a painful one as he witnessed his side get demolished by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge WORLDSOCCERTALK

Although things were looking prosperous for the North London occupants going into the New Year, as they topped the table on numerous instances. However, their season has been reduced over the previous month, with their most recent loss coming to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger was in hope of a jollification in the form of defeating Chelsea to mark his 1,000th game in charge – however it was the exact opposite. The French manager, whose been in charge of the club for almost eighteen years, saw his side get turned over by Chelsea and his unfavorable record of never beating Mourinho would stand.

The fans at the Emirates Stadium will be anticipating better results for the Gunners’ next two fixtures. In midweek they host the Swans, before a mouthwatering clash with Manchester City on Saturday evening, in which they lost 6 – 3 last time round

After playing host to Manchester City, it looks like the tough times are over for the Gunners – at least it is if they can keep consistent. Arsenal have Swansea and Manchester City going into the rest of this week, followed by league games with Everton, West Ham, Hull City, Newcastle, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich, along with Wigan in the FA Cup.

We can’t underestimate Arsenal at all. After all, they hiked to the top of the Premier League in remarkable fashion, delivering Championship-caliber performances. The key here, with all due respect to their opponents, remain the level of opponents they face – they can win most of those games. Suddenly, things are looking up.

Another factor in the Gunners favor is Liverpool’s Anfield fixtures with Manchester City and Chelsea. With their combatants set to drop points Arsenal could get back into the title race. Then again, Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool are on some good form, and even if they drop points here and there, it will be a squeeze for Arsenal.

That’s what makes the FA Cup all the more important. Its pleasing for traditional footballing fans of the increased popularity and importance that domestic competitions are growing in to. If Arsenal slide out of contention for the title, and squander an FA Cup possible win, then turmoil could erupt at the Emirates.

The FA Cup semi-final pits the Gunners against Wigan Athletic at Wembley Stadium. With Wigan’s incredible Wembley form highlighted to many, another upset, would not only be satisfying to the neutral hopeful, but also would dwindle the Gunners, from a big descent of optimism to a bottomless pit of disappointment.

Winning the FA Cup would be a restoration of some of the glory expected from a prosperous start to their season although it will be a hard task. With Arsenal still being in contention they have the chances and opportunities still, to go forth and make a successful run out of the season, rather than yet another year without a trophy.

Four Lookalike Pairs That Andre Mariner (And Anyone Else For ThatMatter) Could Easily Mistake

In wake of Andre Mariner’s mistaken sending off to Kieran Gibbs in Chelsea’s win over Arsenal, we have dived into a list of players where the same mistake could be easily made.

Chelsea v Arsenal: Referee Andre Marriner sends off Kieran Gibbs for a handball committed by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Wrong player: Andre Mariner sends off Gibbs instead of Oxlade-Chamberlain. Was it an error easy to make? GUARDIAN

As Chelsea destroyed Arsenal 6 – 0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Andre Mariner mistakenly sent off Kieran Gibbs instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a hand-ball on the goal line.

While the referee did apologize the following game, we have dived into a list of players where the same mistake could occur.

Gareth Bale (Real Madrid), Kenny McEvoy (Tottenham Academy)

Gareth Bale (left) and Kenny McEvoy (right). MSN

Maybe the mystery of Gareth Bale’s departure lies not in the substantial sum involved in his signing for the Spanish giants Real Madrid, but having someone who looks convincingly like him lurking in the academy. Gareth Bale could have really left in fear of Kenny McEvoy stealing his identity, its plausible isn’t it?

Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich), Gary Neville (ex Manchester United)

https://i0.wp.com/www.virginmedia.com/images/ribery-neville.jpg
Franck Ribery (left) and Gary Neville (right). VIRGIN MEDIA

Gary Neville will be watching closely as Bayern Munich tussle with Manchester United in the Champions League Quarter-Finals. Now at first, maybe you will be thinking that he’ll be watching on edge as his team, Manchester United, bid for European success. Or he could be watching even closer than usual to watch his footballer lookalike, Franck Ribery in action.

https://i0.wp.com/static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Football/Pix/pictures/2010/4/6/1270575974777/Gary-Neville-Franck-Rib-r-001.jpg

The two met (pictured above) in the Champions League in 2010, where a terrific volley from Arjen Robben dispatched Man United from the tournament. More interestingly perhaps, the two battled for possession throughout the game making a scene similar to the Cramp Twins with one brother fighting another.

Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Fabio Borini (Sunderland)

Fabio Borini (left) and Leanardo Bonucci (right).

Both Italian, both bald (or at least one used to be)… we may have reunited long-lost-brothers. You heard it here first!

Liverpool loaned Fabio Borini is currently at Sunderland enjoying the best form of his career while Juventus’ defender Bonucci is having a decent season too. We could very well make them better when we introduce them to one another.

Serge Gnabry (Arsenal), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal) and Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal)

Serge Gnabry (left), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (middle) and Kieran Gibbs (right).

This one was with the help of Andre Mariner himself, along with the addition of Serge Gnabry. Put Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs in close proximity and they may be mistaken for one another, adding Gnabry to that will make it all the more a mixed affair.

Which is the hardest lookalike to differentiate? Get involved and give us your opinions.

Demichelis’ Woes May Continue, But Argentinian Should Look Towards Mertesacker For Inspiration

BY NISAR KHAN

Its been a rocky road in the early stages of Martin Demichelis’ Premier League career. Although he is in a slump as of late, he can look at the case of Per Mertesacker, who started off with a similar journey. Could the Argentinian use Mertesacker’s path to find his own form and adapt to the league?

Demichelis has been woeful for City this season. YAHOO SPORTS

After being acquired by Arsenal in August of 2011, Per Mertesacker’s first few months in the Premier League were tough ones, with the towering German admitting to his faults and stating that he had struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

Critics were very vocal on Mertesacker’s distinct lack of pace, while the man himself also said that the “physicality was new to him” in response to critics of his first few months in the English top flight. Another reason that was pointed out for his poor form was the lacking of the German Winter Break, as the Barclays Premier League continued through Christmas.

While he did not make any big mistakes, Per Mertesacker has shown that it takes time, but you can eventually find your form. Many critics did not expect Per Mertesacker to become as established as he is for Arsenal now, but they were proved wrong as the player eventually got into his stride, and the performances that grasped Arsenal’s attention in the first place.

In Martin Demichelis’ situation, trust is not the issue. Manuel Pelligrini has invested plenty of faith – despite his mistakes – and given him some leniency. There’s no doubt of the criticism that the Argentinian has been subject to, yet he has been given time to adapt.

Demichelis’ foul on Lionel Messi resulted in a penalty that jeopardizes City’s hopes. GETTY IMAGES

The problem is that decent performances by Demichelis are being vastly overshadowed by mistakes. Having been sent off against Barcelona and also conceding to Wigan, it has put him on knife edge in regards to tolerance with City fans.

Assurance should come in the form of Per Mertesacker. In such a fast game that is played in England and Wales in the Premier League, centre-halves especially that are exported from Europe or elsewhere can not instantly grow accustom to that type of play.

Regardless, some mistakes still cannot be tolerated. Its understandable that one cannot instantaneously play at their best right off the bat, but mistakes like conceding penalties can be too costly to forgive or overlook.

Maybe its Demichelis’ slow pace, of which was highlighted in a Twitter trend, “#ThingsFasterThanDemichelis”, that causes the problems. Sometimes he just has to make the challenge when he is trailing the runner, and like the instance of the red card for fouling Lionel Messi, it will result in a penalty and sending off.

Critics Sound Off On Twitter

Looks like its one mistake too many for the Argentinian, as jokes flow out from Twitter in 140 characters or less…

——————————

Despite the criticism, Demichelis still has the trust of the manager which is the most important thing. It now becomes a case of how much Manuel Pelligrini can take. What will happen first: Demichelis dropped, or he finds his form in time?

Per Mertesacker didn’t make the mistakes, but his lack of pace was a problem in the league. However, Mertesacker has bypassed the problem, and maybe Demichelis can do the same, too.

Can Fragile Arsenal Get Through Tough Times For Title Challenge?

BY NISAR KHAN

Arsenal started the season on flying form as they were propelled to the very top of the Premier League for a long spell. However, the Gunners have recently been looking very vulnerable, in the midst of tough times that could define their season.

Arsenal are coming off a loss to Stoke City in the weekend. IMAGE COURTESY: Metro.co.uk

Facing a very tough schedule in the months of February and March, Arsenal’s encounter with Stoke City in the weekend was a game that the Gunners really needed to win, considering the tough games that lied ahead.

Stoke City defeated Arsenal at the Britannia Stadium by one goal. If the tough game line up was hard prior to this loss, it has significantly increased due to Arsenal squandering the opportunity to pick up some easy points.

Arsenal were off to a flying start that saw them ascend to the very summit of the Premier League. After a great run that saw them on top many-a-time leading up to the New Year, then the few weeks into the year.

Bayern Munich have jeopardized the Gunners’ chances of Champions League Quarter-Finals with a two-goal win at the Emirates. Putting the result aside, it was a quality performance by the hosts, yet a red card sent them into a tailspin before conceding two goals, meaning after a solid performance, they had nothing to show for it.

With their next encounter to follow in less than a fortnight’s time, the odds are stacked against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena, trailing by two goals, and Franck Ribery is also likely to be featured on the side. It looks like Arsenal could be crashing out of the Champions League.

In the space of one month’s time, Everton are Arsenal’s opponents in two different competitions, one the FA Cup, and then in the Premier League. Everton are going to be tough opponents that will throw it at Arsenal in the midst of their tough game ahead.

Arsenal are looking the worse for ware at this moment in time. The loss to Stoke City would be incredibly damaging for the side, and should they crash out the FA Cup next week, then turmoil would increase.

Imagine the disappointment and possible uproar against Arsenal, should they not exceed expectations and yet again fall shy of Gold. Arsenal will have to do a fair deal in order to successfully finish fourth in the league, but a big cushion between fourth place and fifth place decrease some of the mounting pressure on the side.

Mesut Ozil’s missed penalty, come back to look at it in a few months, could be the very turning point of the season. Simply put, his penalty crushed morale and his lack of form could prove out to be the biggest mishap for Arsenal’s campaign.

Furthermore, Arsenal are walking a tightrope this season that could topple them out of three tournaments, just when it was looking so optimistic merely one month ago. Their vulnerabilities can be added to by the damages that injuries could make, for instance if Olivier Giroud gets injured, Yaya Sanogo and Nicklas Bendtner will need to be relied on, and although Sanogo makes his improvements here and there, Arsenal’s goal input is cut down.

It’s a really daunting set of fixtures for the remainder of March. It starts with Everton in the FA Cup, followed by an underdog-encounter against Bayern Munich, then Tottenham and Chelsea (away) followed by Manchester City at home. Now those games are really tough for Arsenal. They had their breaks in their tough set of games in February, and with failure to seize on three ‘winnable’ points at Stoke City, the four league games are pivotal.

They have easy games to conclude the season, but by then it could be over.

This could be too much for Arsenal. Although their Championship credentials cannot be underestimated, we have learnt a lot for either side of the argument.

We’ve seen that Arsenal have put on great performances, but not effective enough to win, with the most prominent example being Bayern Munich. We also know that if they lose to Stoke City, then how can they go on to challenge for the title? Champions need to win those types of games.

We know all to well however that the league table continues to fluctuate, and Arsenal are by no means out of it, but they have the toughest road to getting back into the challenge, as of now. We’ll see what they are made of.

Liverpool made a statement of epic proportions when they thumped five goals past Arsenal at Anfield. They stated their title intentions in a big way, to topple Arsenal from the top spot.

With Arsenal facing a very tough schedule in the months of February and March, this game has put it on another perspective, the real flipside of things came out in its true colours with Liverpool’s win on Saturday afternoon.

Not only did Liverpool’s win make it incredibly tight between the top three, it also pushed Liverpool further to getting a shout at their first league win in way over two decades. With Liverpool facing easier games in comparison to a demanding schedule for the Gunners, the ball is back on the court of the Reds.

If you look at it from another perspective, Liverpool are six points behind the top spot, from their two losses over Christmas to Manchester City and Chelsea. Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal are still to play each other in definitive games, while Liverpool face Man City and Chelsea, this time at home later in the season in games that will no doubt be pivotal.

There is around a third of league games left to play, but with Liverpool stopping Arsenal in their tracks, they have provided themselves with a stepping stone back into the title race.

It only takes the dropping of a few points, which in a league as surprising as this, can occur at anytime, and the odds will change for new league leaders.

Subtly, Chelsea are beginning to take advantage. This has opened up a gap for Chelsea to exploit, while Liverpool’s flying form continues, they can pick up more points with big battles remaining.

It’s really opening up, and the 5 – 1 win for Liverpool sent shockwaves that rattled the league. We’re in for an enthralling title race, brought back into the fray after Liverpool’s win.

Robin van Persie scored after twenty seven minutes with a headed goal capitalizing on poor marking from the Gunners.

76,000 fans observed the silence for Remembrance Weekend prior to the game. When the whistle blew the Stadium immediately erupted as excitement epitomized.

Manchester United got things underway and had a corner just over one minute in. Former Arsenal man Robin van Persie’s corner was headed out to safety.

The hosts dictated early possession with solid passing and getting near or around the box. Arsenal were staying firm too as they thwarted any attempts for an early outbreak.

After fifteen minutes of play, Manchester United were looking the better side, marginally. Some promising plays from Wayne Rooney, meanwhile on the other end Arsenal were being broken down. The game had drastically increased in terms of pace, as both teams put pressure on one another. The midfield was dominated with possession with neither establishing a threshold on the game to that point.

Robin van Persie headed his team into the lead of a corner, as he towered into the air and headed emphatically to score against his former club.

Wojciech Szczęsny and Phil Jones clashed heads and the Arsenal keeper went down. Phil Jones was (unfairly) booked, but both players resumed playing after. Reminiscent to Lloris?

Then another head injury came right before half-time, as Nemanja Vidic was knocked out cold by his own player.

When the first half finished, Manchester United lead by one goal. United had more chances, but Arsenal had a big say in the game in terms of possession. A very open game with more to give when play resumed.

As the second half got into full swing Arsenal’s problem was becoming clear, there passing was not good enough. This took a tool on their trademark one-two plays.

Time continued to tick down but Arsenal could not find the equalizer, Manchester United were almost there.

It was a much more even encounter to end the game, but the full-time whistle blew with Manchester United being raised as the victors.

Its arguably David Moyes’ biggest win in charge of the club. Arsenal only five points from the top now, are they back in the mix?
