Bosnia-Herzegovina 3 – 1 Iran

Group F, World Cup Game #42

Bosnia subtly emerged as the frontrunners of the game after a slow start from both. Edin Dzeko’s shot was saved and a dangerously-positioned free kick went astray in the first 15 minutes. Iran weren’t exactly acclimatising themselves for a win.

Edin Dzeko would break the deadlock 23 minutes in. Rising free from a defender, his left-footer clipped the post and went in to put Bosnia ahead.

However, that lead may have lasted a mere 30 seconds, as Masoud Shojaei hit the crossbar with his spectacular effort. Iran’s first glimpse of attack in the game was the closest, non-scored chance yet. Five minutes later and Bosnia were looking concerned as Bosnia hurled an array of numbers toward them.

Iran’s attacking would be limited and they would not score for the remainder of the half. After the interval the game followed a similar tone, slow and action-deprived.

Miralem Pjanic doubled the lead 10 minutes after the beginning of the half, as he stopped Edin Dzeko’s pass and sweetly struck it past the keeper.

After the hour mark they almost made it 3-0, only for Kolasinac’s cross to ricochet of a defender onto the frame of goal.

Reza Ghoochannejhad almost gave Iran a shout just moments later but dragged his shot wide. Seconds later, he would find himself free in front of goal to strike in and score Iran’s first (and only) of the tournament.

Iran went from holding back, to putting too much in – almost instantly, Avdija Vrsajevic was on the end of an instant Bosnian break through and hit it across the keeper to keep it well out of Iran’s winning potential.

Bosnia finished their campaign by registering a victory, eliminating an Iran fire that burned just for a few minutes – they both said farewell to Brazil in a tame contest.

Odemwingie and Nigeria Send Bosnia Crashing Out of World Cup

Peter Odemwingie scored against Bosnia to give Nigeria their first World Cup win since 1998 and knocking out their opponents in the process.

Nigeria 1 – 0 Bosnia-Herzegovina
Peter Odemwingie (29′)
Saturday 21 June 2014
11pm BST (UK time)
Arena Pantanal, Cuiabá
Group F, World Cup Game #29

After an early Bosnian stint that saw them assemble numbers to trouble Nigeria, the game swung towards the Africans’ favour. Peter Odemwingie’s sweetly-struck free-kick was just off target, inches wide from
Asmir Begović’s goal.

Nigeria would soon emerge atop in the harsh conditions, and their pace would prove a valuable asset.

Edin Dzeko believed he had scored for Bosnia-Herzegovina put the linesman controversially ruled it offside. He was clearly onside and its a shame that a refereeing lead to Bosnian demise.

Emineke surged down the right, overpowered a defender then square the ball perfectly across to Odemwingie, smashing Nigeria in front for good.

They finished the first half strongly, and Bosnia couldn’t redeem themselves.

Edin Dzeko had plenty of chances but couldn’t do much with them – his late header was scooped by Enyeama and then his stoppage time shot was tipped onto the bar.

Nigeria were feeling the effect of the conditions, down on the ground throughout – fatigued after their hard work.

It came as a sweet win for Nigeria, but agony for Bosnia who crashed out.

Lionel Messi Leads Argentine Escape From Bosnia

The Albiceleste edge past World Cup debutants, Bosnia-Herzegovina, but it was far from a walk in the park.

Argentina 2 – 1 Bosnia-Herzegovina
“(S. Kolasinac OG ‘3)” “(L. Messi ’65)” “(V. Ibisevic ’85)”
Man of the match: Lionel Messi
Possession: Argentina 56% – 44% Bosnia & Herzegovina
Sunday 14 June 2014
11pm BST (UK time)
Estádio Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro
Group F, World Cup Game #11

The Argentina squad picked up 3 points in it’s World Cup opener at the Maracanã. An extextremely early (‘3) own from Bosnia-Herzegovina player Kolasinac [he was fantastic aftafterwards] from a FK-set piece due to Argentina’s pressing.

The own goal however flipped the game plan as the Bosnian Dragons attacked and greatly pressured the Albiceleste’s questioned defense and their goal keeper, Romero. The Albiceleste defense let up a few times, but Romero handled business. By the time Argentina gathered composure in attack, the second half bell sounded.

Early in the second half, the story was the same. Bosnia fought for an eequaliser, but Argentina’s attack was pushing, creating chances, but no goals. Argentina had the pospossessio,. in their favor, but Bosnia was much more efficient of their share of the Brazuca. Then, he arrived.

With worrying faces from Argentina supporters, Alejandro Sabella’s captain eased their souls with a magisterial Golazo! Lionel Messi kept the chances coming, but with some fuel from frustration, the artful dodger dribbled ahead, laid it off for his teammate who served it back to him. After another brief dribble, he buried the ball at the back of the net, and his celebration of his second ever World Cup goal showed his passion for those Albiceleste colors. Bosnia’s Ibisevic rattled a late goal, but it was not enough.

Both sides showed positive signs, but also the need to improve.

The match also featured the return of Argentine stricker Gonzalo Higuaín, whom the Albiceleste hope they can use to end their World Cup campaign exactly where it began, at the Maracanã
