A highly emotionally charged Brazil, pumped up from their anthem, would see an early free-kick fizzle out as Hulk was fouled by Bedimo. Soon after, Paulinho pulled back a shot that was blocked. There was an electric atmosphere as the Brazilians began with one-way traffic.

Cameroon were able to survive the early wave of attack, with a corner kick obtained. They pressed Brazil, at times though too physical with early fouls called. David Luiz looked concerned after clearing Aboubakar’s troubling through ball into the box. Cameroon held their own.

After Allan Nyom shoved Neymar to the ground at the end of a footrace towards the corner flag, Brazil would reopen themselves with their own positive spell.

Near to the left touchline, Luis Gustavo opened up down the left, navigating around defenders, and crossing it low to Neymar, who’s sidefooted attempt went straight past Itandje into goal. Cameroon were still reeling two minute later, when Neymar perfected a volley but went straight at the keeper.

There was no light at the end of the tunnel for Cameroon, just yet. Paulinho’s low cross to Fred was taken down by a tackle, but almost trickled into goal, although Itandje safely collected the ball. The Cameroonian keeper then scrambled onto Hulk’s troubling cross.

Thiago Silva got in the way of Eyong’s shot, and it almost was diverted into his own goal. Then, Cameroon struck the woodwork from the corner kick.

For all that pressure, Brazil would be punished.

Failing to pick up on any defenders, Joël Matip got on the end of a low driven cross, tapping in from close range to stun the Brazilians. Cameroon scored their first World Cup goal against Brazil, no wonder… Brazil’s defending was horrific.

Brazil would expose Cameroon’s biggest weakness – a long pass from Marcelo found Neymar in enough space to deceive two defenders, onto his right and driving it low into goal, putting Brazil back in the lead.

Hulk was unable to complete a beautiful buildup that saw Neymar’s turn eventually lead to Hulk, but he scooped it towards the defender. The corner would not materialize and Brazil went into the interval in charge.

Brazil were quick out of the blocks for the second. First, Hulk was excellently tackled on his charge into the box, before Fred’s shot from outside the box stung the keeper’s hands, out for a corner.

Fred would deter critics after he extended Brazil’s lead with a free header. After a blocked shot, he got on the end of the cross to put Brazil in a comfortable position.

With news of Mexico increasing their goal difference, Brazil’s top spot in the group was in jeopardy.

But Fernandinho, surging into the box pocketed it past the keeper to make sure that Brazil would top the group.

Brazil would finish top of the group.

Questions are asked of Brazil, and the questions are answered. Neymar and Co. help to ease past Cameroon as they breach into the Round of 16.

Cameroon 0 – 4 Croatia

Group B, World Cup Game #20

With the game billed to be a do or die game in group A Cameroon seemed to realise this first with some early chances and good pressure placing Croatia on the back foot. But after 11 minutes the game was turned on its head when the instrumental Luka Modric played a fine ball from deep inside his own half to Perisic who played a delightful cross into the penalty area where the ever so reliable Ivica Olic finished comfortably passed Itanje the ex Liverpool man.

With the game going dull Alex song decided to change this when he lashed out at Bayern Munich striker Mandzukic which led to a straight red card for him.

After this Croatia rallied with Ivan Perisic punishing the Cameroon defence with a tidy finish just after half time after a mistake by the Cameroon goalkeeper.

Cameroon perished further after the sending off with Mandzukic scoring a great quick brace first heading home before soon joining in with his second goal after a good Eduardo run and strike which was parried into the feet of Mandzukic.

Cameroon were poor throughout and face deep inquisition after such a game. Croatia meanwhile seem buoyed and on a good run.

Man of the Match: Mandzukic class was the order of the day.
Flop of the Match: Charles Itanje flapped at everything

Cameroon plummet out of the tournament while Croatia bounce back and thrive, re-opening the possibility of second round qualification.

Peralta Strike Sinks Cameroon in Controversial Game in Natal

World Cup ·

In a closely contested and controversial game throughout, Mexico were able to kick off their World Cup campaign with a bang as they defeated Cameroon 1-0, thanks to a second half goal from Oribe Peralta in Natal.

Group A, World Cup Game #2

In the second World Cup game of 2014, Mexico saw off Cameroon with Oribe Peralta struck home after Giovani Dos Santos’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Itadje.

Overall, many people thought this was a very controversial game, as not one, but two of Giovani Dos Santos’ goals were disallowed due to the offside flag. When the replay showed, it looked like the linesman may have got it wrong, leaving Dos Santos and Mexico hard done by.

Football fans packed the beautiful Stadium in Natal, awaiting the second game of the greatest football spectacle in the world.

After the wait, Mexico and Cameroon finally got it on, and the first 15 minutes of the game was very even, as both sides were trying hard to get the opening goal.

Just around the 20 minute mark, Cameroon came really close to taking the lead, as Samuel Eto’o’s header hit the postand went out. The only real chance or opportunity for Cameroon to shout about.

After the Eto’o missed chance, Mexico were next to pose a threat as they THOUGHT they broke the deadlock with a beautifully timed strike by Dos Santos, disallowed due to the offside rule.

Not too long after the disallowed goal, Mexico put pressure on Cameroon and won a corner. A great corner that Dos Santos got on the end of again, was also disallowed. This angered and frustrated the Mexicans and their coach, and understandably so, because when the replay was shown, the ball actually deflected off the head of a Cameroon defender, proving that Dos Santos was onside and the goal should have counted.

Cameroon were looking good on their set pieces and corners., as they put Mexico under a little bit of pressure, but no Cameroon player was able to shield the ball into the goal.

With not many chances or goals in the first half, the fans in attendance hoped for a better second period.

Mid way through into the second half, the deadlock was finally broken, and it was broken by the side that was the more threatening throughout, Mexico. After Giovani Dos Santos’ shot was parried by Cameroon goalkeeper Itadje, the ball fell to Oribe Peralta and the Mexican struck home to ensure his team got the well deserved goal, and edge them closer to a victory.

The second half wasn’t that better than the first, but as the match went into stoppage time, Cameroon had a marvelous chance, as Moukandjo’s powerful header was firmly saved by Ochoa, keeping the Mexicans in front, and leading them to victory against Cameroon.

Match breakdown

Possession: Mexico 62%, Cameroon 38%
Shots: Mexico 9, Cameroon 13
Stalemate first half: Flat first half, Mexico coming closest to breaking the deadlock.
Dos Santos misery: Giovani Dos Santos’s disallowed goals misery was secured by late Peralta strike.

The win for Mexico may give them a chance of beating the Group Stages, but it’s sadness for Cameroon as they lose out on points.

After the controversy, Mexico still get the job done thanks to Oribe Parelta’s 61st minute strike.
