As the Octagon invaded the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, there were many fighters who had the crowd in their corner, including Chad Mendes, Urijah Faber and challenger Joseph Benavidez.

In the penultimate UFC card of the year, there was plenty of action in the Octagon to entertain many-a-fight-fan.

Quick Fix: Preliminary Action

  • Alptekin Ozilic won by Split Decision in his UFC debut by defeating Darren Uyenoyama in the opening bout of the night in the online prelims.
  • Abel Trujillo made a big statement with a Round 2 knockout of Roger Bowling. An impressive performance that sees him aggressive and sharp in a brutal victory.
  • Sam Stout technically outclassed Cody McKenzie to win via Unanimous Decision, with plenty of strikes to pick up the points on the scorecard.
  • Zach Macovsky defeated former main-eventer Scott Jorgensen in a solid Unanimous Decision victory.
  • Bobby Green scored his third consecutive win in the Octagon defeating Pat Healy via Unanimous Decision in a relatively close fight.
  • Edson Barboza defeated Danny Castillo in a fantastic fight, winning by Unanimous Decision. Having been on the verge of being knocked out in Round 1, Barboza went on to win the bout.
  • Ryan LaFlare picked up his tenth straight win after defeating Court McGee via Decision in the final preliminary bout.
Main Card Action

Joe Lauzon defeated Mac Danzig via Decision as he reconciled his slowness on his feet to ground-and-pound Danzig to pick up the points. A must-win for Lauzon paid off, and could be one of many to come.

Chad Mendes won convincingly in his bout with Nik Lentz. Looking fast and on the verge of a knockout earlier, the Sacramento hometown boy seemed to be drained and became much slower after taking a kick to the body. A win for Mendes, but far from his best. In a post-fight interview, Mendes would later reveal that he had been suffering from a condition over the recent weeks..

The ‘California Kid’ Urijah Faber was yet again victorious this time defeating Michael McDonald in a great contest. Faber submitted the dangerous striker with a guillotine choke in Round 2 to pick up an eleventh submission victory. Faber made another bold statement for #1 contender-ship, potentially with him being the next contender following Cruz vs. Barao next year. Faber had managed to stay away from McDonald’s lethal shots to go on and get the victory.

In the main event, Joseph Benavidez got his second shot at the UFC Flyweight Championship against Demetrius Johnson. Having initially defeated Benavidez to win the inaugural Championship, Johnson would go on to win this time in much more affirmative fashion. Just over two minutes into the Round, Johnson landed a huge right hand that put Benavidez down, followed by more punches to finish Benavidez and retain.

From the night’s fights, two number one contenders may have emerged. Hometown fighters Urijah Faber and Chad Mendes solidified their status with another win each, and could very well be the challengers in the Featherweight and Bantamweight division in the near future.

Once again, Demetrius Johnson proves that he is the best, by far, at 125. Constantly improving fight by fight, Mighty Mouse delivers again.

Opening the main card was the Women’s Bantamweight Division. UFC 157 headliner Liz Carmouche became the first Woman to fight in an Octagon twice in her first UFC victory over Jessica Andrade.

Jessica Andrade was the better of the two in the first round, and Carmouche managed to hold through the arm-in guillotine as the first round drew to a close.

Liz Carmouche would fire back emphatically in the second round and she was relentless on the ground with constant strikes, making the stoppage imminent.

The fight was finished in the high mount when Carmouche had a series of unanswered shots, causing Herb Dean to stop the fight.

Robbie Lawler got his 18th knockout in his UFC career following his Round 2 finish over Bobby Voelker.

The vicious Bobby Voelker got Lawler stunned a few times in the first round, but a highlight from Round 1 was a huge flying knee and Lawler finished Round 1 with his strikes definitely landing.

In Round 2, Lawler opened up with a flurry of punches but slipped. After recovering, Robbie Lawler hit a HUGE head kick on Voelker sending him crashing to the mat, it was all over, what a knockout.

In the co-main event, Welterweights Rory McDonald and Jake Ellenberger went the distance, but the fight seemed to lack the action that was much anticipated going into the fight.

Rory McDonald prevailed via Unanimous Decision, although this fight was not as good as we expected, and the fans showed it with boos towards the end of the first round and the end of the bout.

McDonald’s jab was the difference for this fight as it allowed him to score much more and made it hard for Jake Ellenberger to combat.

It was a case of time running out for Jake Ellenberger, McDonald managed to stay ahead of him and took the Unanimous Decision win (30-27, 29-28, 30-27).

Finally, in the main event, Demetrius Johnson got the latest stoppage in the UFC after submitting John Moraga via armbar with less than two minutes remaining.

Johnson was relentless in his takedown attempts and Moraga found himself on the canvas numerous times.

It was a showing of incredible talent by Demetrius Johnson, using his speed and wrestling skills to defeat Moraga, but Moraga’s effort put up a challenge and that is why it took 5 rounds for the finish.

Demetrius Johnson, still your UFC Flyweight Champion on a great night from Seattle.
