TSMs MOST DEADLY: Sloggers

When it comes to run – chases as hard as 12 or thirteen an over, all teams need that electrifying spark hidden away in the batting order which can ignite a blistering shower of sixes and fours. Now, of course, some of these extra special batsmen are supernaturals to the game. The likes of Chris Gayle and MS Dhoni feature in this countdown of the Top 10 Sloggers in the game.

10. Kevin Pietersen
KP has been out of the t20 game for a few months now for England, but he has always been lighting up the stadium with huge hits, come what may. He is the standout big-hitter in the England set up and has serious competition in the improving Ravi Bopara. In limited overs, the 33 year-old boasts an average of nearly 42 and a high score of 130. Have the glory days finished for the England great? He is nearing an age where a lot of the sloggers in this article are, pre-retirement.

9. Dwayne Bravo
The all dancing, all rounder turned thirty a couple of weeks back and is now the ODI captain for his nation. He is entering a period of responsibility and stability needed to show his power as skipper. He is at the peak of his career, after a brilliant IPL season where he took over 20 wickets and was also one of the key batsmen for the Super Kings. He has an average of 24 and a high score of 112.

8. AB De Villiers
The South African “wiki” is is nation’s main resort for large run chases. When the likes of Hashim Amla and Jaques Kallis are not performing, it is up to the 29-year old talisman to show up and get the Proteas across the line. A high score of 146 and an average of 49.29 show just why he is one of the best in the business.

7. Brendon McCullum
Brendon ‘O Mac is a revelation in the sport and more importantly, the ODI scene. He has transformed into one of the best wicketkeeping batsmen around and his record 158 off just 73 balls show just why. A fantastic record shows an average of 30 and a high score of 131 for the 31 year old.

6. Shahid Afridi
Shahid Afridi is undoubtedly one of the greatest batsmen to grace the limited overs format. While boasting the record for quickest centuries and fifties in ODI’s, recent form has started to slip away from the 33 year old’s repetoire. He made a sensational comeback to the Pakistan side in July against West Indies when he smashed 76 and also grabbed 7 wickets. He may be a bowler all-rounder now, but Boom Boom’s 23 average and 124 high score speak for itself.

5. MS Dhoni
The ice-cool captain is always there for his country, and is never under a slight of pressure from the Indian fans, they know he will get the job done. A fantastic statistical showing for the 32 year old skipper denotes that his batting average in ODI’s is 51 and he has a high score of 183 not out.

4. Keiron Pollard
Keiron Pollard is often overshadowed in the West Indies  set up by a certain pair of sloggers higher up in this list. He is the free-hitting, destructive batsmen for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and has shown brilliance in the field and with bat in the past few years. He is still very young at 26, and can become the most lethal weapon for any side he plays for. He has a high score of 119 and an average of 25.

3. Chris Gayle
Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The Gaylestorm has weakened in the past few months and is out of form for the West Indies. Often called the ultimate batting machine, he has relinquished his title and is no longer the leading slogger for the Windies. He can still show off a batting average of 38 and a high score of 153  though. There is an astonishing 4 West Indians in this countdown and nearly 34 year old Gayle is only second best to a deserving batsman.

2. Darren Sammy
Yes. This is the man who has taken the reigns of the West Indian batting charge ahead of Chris Gayle. He is fully deserving of it though, rising to the occasion several times for both country and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. The former skipper is still only 29, and an average of 22 and a high score of 84 show there is still better to see from the St Lucian all rounder.

1. SHANE WATSON
Yep, the Aussie is officially TSM’s most deadly slogger. His consistency is free flowing and he has the record for the most sixes in a game. He has done it time and again for the Rajasthan Royals and Oz and it shows as he has the highest score of all the batsmen in this countdown at 185 not out. He also has an exceptional batting average of 41 and at the age of 32, cricket fans must see the best while it lasts.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013: India vs. Pakistan

India further exemplified their Champions Trophy dominance with an easy win over rivals Pakistan.

It was yet another game of which was heavily affected by the rain, as play was stopped numerous times courtesy of the rain pouring down at Edgbaston. This resulted in the match being reduced in overs and reverting to the Duckworth-Lewis method.

India reached their revised target of 102 runs within 19.1 overs, following the Duckworth-Lewis method being applied to Pakistan’s 165 in 39.4 overs.

Pakistan – who were already eliminated from the tournament – really had little incentive in the match against a team who had already qualified. And it showed being bowled out for 165 after a long-winded innings lasting over 39 overs.

India were on top form with an eight-wicket victory over Pakistan and Dhawan had a terrific innings striking 48 runs from 41 balls.

Meanwhile, India’s bowlers had Pakistan troubled too, as Bhuvneshwar Kumar was 2 – 19.

India maintain a 100% record in the tournament, looking very strong with fresh new talent following the paths paved by the veterans. Plus they now claim the bragging rights over their rivals.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013: India vs. South Africa

In the opening game of the Champions Trophy 2013, India and South Africa were in Cardiff, in a game which the Indians outplayed a weakened South African team with a 26-run victory.

India posted 331 against South Africa in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. They achieved a decent score courtesy of 3 brilliant innings from Ravindra Jadeja, Shikar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma. Jadeja powered to 47 hitting 7 fours and a six from just 29 deliveries. Rohit Sharma mustered 64 from 81 balls in a classy performance which included 8 fours and a six. But the plaudits went to Dhawan who scored his maiden ODI century off 94 balls, hitting 12 fours and a six in the process, ending with 114. South Africa now chase 332 at Cardiff.

South Africa were bowled all out for 305 runs, despite 71* for McLaren and de Villiers and Peterson adding 124 runs. But the match seemed to be one of which South Africa were to crumble, with sloppy playing things just began to deteriorate throughout their innings. India out-batted South Africa and even surprisingly managed to outfield them too which was part of a great performance.

An impressive performance by India that gets them off to a great start in the Champions Trophy. South Africa are a team depleted, but India’s performance against them still made a bold statement. South Africa now find themselves in an already-uphill battle while the World Champions have some momentum. Will this be one of many India wins to come? Can South Africa defy the odds and progress?
