Costa Rica 0 – 0 England
Tuesday 24 June 2014
Kick-off: 5pm BST (UK time)
Estádio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte
Group D, World Cup Game #37

As kick-off approached, the sun was shining down on the packed stadium in Estadio Mineirao. While England were hoping for the three points to end their dissapointing campaign on a high, Costa Rica wanted to win grab a third successive group stage victory, after knocking off Uruguay and Italy beforehand.

Only 11 minutes into the game and Daniel Sturridge received his first chance of the game as the speedy Jack Wilshere handed the Liverpool man the ball just outside the area. Sturridge took a swing and came very close with the ball just curling past the post.

A high, spinning free kick was launched right into the grasp of Ben Foster, and the former Manchester United goalkeeper made a terrific save. He got a vital finger onto the ball, tipping it just over the cross-bar.

England were up for a penalty shout as Daniel Sturridge was fouled in the box. The replay shows that it should have been a penalty, as the Costa Rica defender knocked Sturridge over without getting any of the ball.

Half time approached and no team was really able to get a grip of the game and create big chances. England came close with Daniel Sturridge taking a few shots but nothing could test the Costa Rica goalkeeper. At the other end, a high, spinning, looping free kick tested Ben Foster but there wasn’t anything else the Costa Ricans did to put England’s defence under real pressure.

England made a positive start to the second half, having most of the possession and Daniel Sturridge had a great chance to put his side ahead. He was put through after a pass slid through the Costa Rica defence but the ball just crept away from the Liverpool striker, allowing Navas to retrieve the ball.

Superb play from Wilshere and Sturridge sees the highly rated striker put in on goal after a great one-two with the Arsenal midfielder. Sturridge got in on goal and sadly, put his shot just wide of the post. Probably the best chance England have had in the game.

Match breakdown

Man of the Match: My MOTM would be Daniel Sturridge
Flop of the Match: Daniel Sturridge misses great opportunity

Costa Rica Hold England’s attack at bay
England tried to get a goal past the Costa Ricans but the tight defence saw the attack off.

It’s come to an end for England. Costa Rica have impressed many as they top the group, when many expected them to finish bottom. Group D is settled.

Gerrard ‘Not Rushing’ Into Any Decision, Vows to Deliver Win Over Costa Rica

England captain Steven Gerrard has cleared up rumours of his possible resignation of captaincy in an England press conference in Rio.

Steven Gerrard was addressing the press alongside England manager Roy Hodgson, as they prepared for their final World Cup game against Costa Rica.

After consecutive World Cup losses to Italy and Uruguay, speculation ran rampant about the possible departure of Steven Gerrard’s captain role.

But in Rio, Gerrard said he “certainly won’t be rushing into any decision”, and “asked the manager for some time over Summer” to consider.

“We tried our very best”, Hodgson explained, but couldn’t deny disappointment.

“I can see a lot of possibility for this team to improve”, he added. “There is work to be done but we’re on a good path”.

It could prove contradictory however, with urges to push the youth in the team that could see Gerrard and others having to make way.

Hodgson later defended his side, saying the “preparation could not have been any better”, and said the game could have went either way.

Both were adamant that there was plenty of quality in the side.

Gerrard said the fans deserve a win, and that it what he intends to do over Costa Rica.

“We’ve got it all to do”, Hodgson concluded.

Can England revamp even with Gerrard and Hodgson staying put?

Was England’s Elimination From World Cup Group a Forgone Conclusion?

England are now eliminated from the World Cup, after consecutive losses in their group. But were the 3 Lions already doomed before a ball was eve kicked?

Luis Suarez plummeted English hopes into tatters on Thursday night in Sao Paulo forcing many fans to accept the now inevitable and realistic fate – elimination.

As you’ve most probably heard often before, it’s now “out of England’s hands” and they had to rely on other results to go their way.

But many still have a shred of belief – who can’t? It’s the World Cup and anything can happen – just to make sure you’re aware before the rest goes on. That belief came to an end when Costa Rica stunned Italy.

The pendulum swung so suddenly. England were brimming with optimism even after losing to Italy because they played very well. On the other hand, they were at fault in their loss to Uruguay.

Think back to December 6 (yes, my birthday, but for another reason) – when the World Cup fixtures were released. There was an underwhelming sense of trepidation and ambitions were limited with the calibre of opponents.

With both Uruguay and Italy ranking high above us, did we have the chance?

Regardless of your personal thought on FIFA rankings, they need to be considered.

What made it so big here was a simple fuel, called belief. 50 million hopes hoisted on the shoulders of 11 players. Belief was strong – viewing figures showed England vs. Uruguay was the most viewed sporting event since the London Olympics.

We were prompted to be cautious early though, weren’t we? Surely if we couldn’t ease past our friendlies leading up to the tournament, would we have a chance?

I’m not going to sit here and criticise belief, because I myself have and still believed that England could pull it off. But, the sense of triumph will be sour.

There’s been an abundance of contradiction from many sources – everyone is saying the future is bright which it is, but also believing England can go on now.

Although eliminated, the game against Costa Rica will hold the key for England’s future. However Costa Rica have been quick to prove that they are a tough side.

Did England really have a chance or was it an indulged belief that clouded the reality?

Suarez Double Puts England World Cup Hopes In Jeopardy

A hero to many, Luis Suarez hit home not once, but twice to cancel out a late Wayne Rooney equalizer as Uruguay thwart England in Sao Paulo.

Uruguay 2 – 1 England
Luis Suarez (39′) (85′) Wayne Rooney (75′)
Thursday 19 June 2014
8pm BST (UK time)
Arena Corinthians, São Paulo
Group D, World Cup Game #22

The sides sung their nation anthems and the game was underway! Two nations come together to support their team.

A first glimpse of Luis Suarez as the Liverpool striker did a cheeky one-two then entrerd the box but Gary Cahill headed the ball out.

Nearly 10 mintues in and a Wayne Rooney free-kick just crept wide of the post. A great chance after Godin conceded the kick with a hand-ball and the Uruguay defender was also booked.

Uruguay come close as Glen Johnson sloppily knocks the ball to Christian Rodriguez on the left and he hits it with force but it travels over the cross bar. Near chance for Rodriguez and Uruguay.

27 mintues in the game, a low corner boxed in outside the area and Edinson Cavani gets on the end of it but blasts the ball just over Joe Hart’s crossbar.

The first 30 mintues of the match was fairly even as both sides had plenty of possession but it was Uruguay who enjoyed having a few more chances. They weren’t able to convery them but they are definitely looking better than they were in their game against Costa Rica which they shockingly lost 3-1. Possession stats for first half an hour and 7 minutes were URU 41%, ENG 59%.

Wayne Rooney’s header strikes the cross bar as a looping free-kick from Steven Gerrard beats the Uruguay keeper at the back post. Rooney comes so close to getting his first World Cup goal but the cross bar denies him.

Uruguay were the team that struck first as a counter attack that saw England’s defence flop, it was none over than Luis Suarez who headed home a world class Edinson Cavani cross from close range. Nonetheless, a great header by Suarez who directed it straight past Joe Hart, giving Uruguay a 1-0 lead just 6 minutes from half time. Uruguay 1-0 England.

It was a shaky start to the second half for England, as Uruguay picked and poked at their defence. In the first half, Luis Suarez nearly ciahgt out England goalkeeper Joe Hart with a low corner and it happened again The ball almost crossed the line but Hart patted it away. Awful defending from England.

Some awful England defending comes to show as Uruguay rip through the back four. Edinson Cavani was played in one on one at a slight angle but a goalscoring postiton. The Uruguay striker put the ball wide and England survive the additional onslaught.

After a shaky start to the second half, England were just able to get forward as a low cross into the box finds Wayne Rooney but the Manchester United striker thumps the ball at the Uruguayan keeper. Very, very close to an equalizer. Some good play by England.

75 minutes gone and an England goal finally got a well deserved goal. After a great run from right back Glen Johnson, twisting and turning past the Uruguay defence he slid the ball into Wayne Rooney and the Man Utd star struck home from close range. What a moment for England as they get themselves back in the game.

About 8 or so minutes after Rooney’s equalizer, Uruguay hit back after the goalkeeper’s long kick forward, Edinson Cavani heads on to Luis Suarez and the striker for Liverpool blasts home past Joe Hart. A true hero for Uruguay and their supporters as he takes them into a 2-1 lead.

Match breakdown

Man of the Match: Luis Suarez, two great goals to salvage URU win.
Flop of the Match: Edinson Cavani misses a golden opportunity.

After defeat, England now have to beat Costa Rica and rely on two Italy wins. Can they do it?

Italy Roughly Halt England in Manaus

Mario Balotelli headed home the dividing goal as Italy edged past England in their group meeting in Manaus.

England 1 – 2 Italy
Claudio Marchision (35′), Daniel Sturridge (37′), Mario Balotelli (50′)
Saturday 14 June 2014
Kick-off: 11pm BST (UK time)
Arena Amazônia, Manaus
Group D, World Cup Game #7

England were quick out of the blocks as they hauled an early onslaught towards Italy. Raheem Sterling’s long range drive had many England fans on their feet with the net bulging, but it would appear that the ball struck the side netting.

They would continue to test, as Jordan Henderson tested Sirigu moments later. Hodgson’s side came out gunning for a win, and came close.

However, Italy were able to master control in the game for a spell, long enough to open up some chances. Eventually, a nice passing buildup would fall to Claudio Marchisio, striking from long-range to the bottom corner past Joe Hart.

That goal would prove to light the fire in England’s attack, with Daniel Sturridge equalising two minutes after Italy broke ahead. A rapid counter attack saw Wayne Rooney explode down the left, guiding it towards Sturridge who smashed in for the equaliser.

England physio Gary Lewin suffered a major ankle injury in the celebration goal – yes, the physio himself – when embracing with the players after the equaliser. He was stretched of, ironically.

Both sides would be a good match for the remainder of the half. Italy had more of the ball down the first half and restricted the width of England. The 2006 World Cup Champions continued to probe, although it was England doing the better before the first 45 minutes drew to a close.

Night may have descended on Manaus, but it was still very hot and humid with the pitch hardly helping. England’s crossing was poor in the second half down the right, possibly due to a deteriorated surface.

Mario Balotelli guided in a header on the 50th minute after more intricate passing from Italy. He beat Cahill in the air to head away from Joe Hart.

That would ultimately set Italy up to win for good. It became a tale of England’s pressing in the final third, but just not having enough to convert a goal. With that being said, overcommitment became an issue since it was not good enough to convert an attack.

Immobile almost got completely through on goal, but Gary Cahill tracked the Italian prospect to tackle away.

Ross Barkley also featured, and showed signs of promise down the flanks with Raheem Sterling that should come to fruition in their next group games.

Wayne Rooney missed a massive chance – put through into the box but dragged the shot wide frustratingly. Other chances featured a Gerrard free-kick that went over, and likewise for Leighton Baines.

Earlier, Steven Gerrard could have had a decent penalty shout when Gabriel Pelatta body-checked the skipper having been put through by Sturridge’s touch. Gerrard however did not appeal. Italy had a first half shout too, with a potential handball call from Glen Johnson – the referee though, got it right on both occasions.

England had their shout in the game, but simply the difference was at the hands of Balotelli’s goal. Italy weren’t sitting back either, as Pirlo was just a crossbar shot of scoring one of the greatest World Cups in history. Swerving turbulently in the air, it rattled off the crossbar.

A few younger players suffered from cramps towards the latter stages of the game coming as a possible alert for the England team.

Gerrard expressed his disappointment to not take any points away for the effort, and it now bares pressure on their upcoming fixtures.

Match Breakdown

Possession: England 47%, Italy 53%
Shots: England 14, Italy 11
Man of the Match: Andrea Pirlo
Flop of the Match: Wayne Rooney

Prospects
The Italy clash comes with some takeaways as Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling showed signs of threats.

Chances
Rooney didn’t make his big chance, Balotteli did. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference.

Group D Split Wide Open
After Costa Rica stunned Uruguay followed by Italy’s win, Group D has become a mix up that not many expected.

Italy just edge past England but there are many takeaways for the 3 Lions with a positive performance, while Italy can set their sights on progression with an open group.

England’s hopes are put on hold as Balotelli’s goal pays dividends.

Wayne Rooney Takes the Worst Corner You’ll Ever See

It doesn’t get worse than this. During the 2nd half of England’s game with Italy, Wayne Rooney… well just see for yourself.

That could be the worst corner we’ve seen in World Cup history. Ever. Oh, and he is getting paid £300K a week. Wow.

Selection Dilemma For Roy Hodgson Solved By TSM

England kick off their tournament in front of a much less expectant audience than in South Africa, but deep down Roy Hodgson’s men may fancy themselves as dark horses. This is how my England team would line up against Italy in Manaus.

A lot has been made of which approach Roy Hodgson will take against an experienced Italian team in Manaus on Sunday night. Those whose positions have come under scrutiny are the likes of right-back Glen Johnson, and Wayne Rooney.

Also, every England fan is hoping that Roy picks Liverpool boy wonder Raheem Sterling ahead of Danny Welbeck, a Hodgson favourite. The gaffer’s team selection is sure to change the complexion of the match in hand and which type of performance we get to see. Below is my personal first 11 (don’t be surprised!)

If he had been fit, I might have been tempted to field Alex Oxlade Chamberlain instead of Jordan Henderson, but as that is not the case, the Liverpool man gets the nod.

I have left Wayne Rooney out simply because I don’t think he has enough pace in his game. He will be a very useful sub though. Pace early on will be key for the Three Lions because Italy are short on full backs, so the likes of Sterling and Lallana will have the license to roam and exploit the space early on, just like Liverpool have done this past season.

Personal Verdict: “I hope Roy Hodgson fields a side like this one because if there is one weakness in the Italians game, it is a lack of pace and they have to pay for that.”

South Africa Scrape Past England In World Twenty20 Thriller

BY CENA HARPIN

South Africa defeated England by just 3 runs to eliminate them from the 2014 World t20 Tournament. Many thought the South Africans were going to demolish England, but the Three Lions definitely gave South Africa a hard fight.

Embedded image permalink

South Africa one the toss and elected to bat first. At the end of their 20 overs, the South Africans managed to score a total of 196 runs, with just 5 wickets being conceded. AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla were the two stand out batsman in the innings, with de Villiers knocking 69 runs off just 28 balls, and Amla scoring 56 runs off 37 balls. The England wicket takers were Tim Bresnan, Chris Jordan, Stuart Broad, and spinner bowler, James Tredwell. SA also conceded another wicket to Ravi Bopara, one got rid of Duminy with a run out. A strong innings from South Africa dented England’s hopes of chasing the total down.

England started their batting innings fairly strong, with openers Alex Hales and Michael Lumb creating a solid 46 run partnership, until Lumb was caught by Miller off the bowling of Parnell. Ali scored just 10 for England, Morgan scored 14, and Buttler knocked a total of 34 runs. After being 175-7 in 19.1 overs, England still needed a fair few amount of runs, and it seemed very unlikely. And after completed their 20 overs of batting, England reached a total of 193-7, but it wasn’t enough to win, as South Africa won by 3 runs.

This was a very competitive match, and England have nothing to be ashamed of. They almost slayed the South Africans, but they just couldn’t get to their target of 197.

South Africa now look on to the final of the World t20 tournament, but the big question is, can they get the job done and become the 2014 World t20 champions? Be sure to give your thoughts in the comment box below, and thanks for reading!

England Edge Out Sri Lanka In World T20 Contest

BY CENA HARPIN

After a miserable few months for England, they finally hit back and defeat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the World t20 tournament.

Alex Hales
Alex Hales delivered a standout performance on the night. GETTY IMAGES

The man of the match in my eyes, was easily the upcoming star, Alex Hales who was 116* from just 64 balls. An absolutely outstanding innings from the English youngster, who is progressing after every single match.

Sri Lanka scored a total of 189/4, with Jayawardene and Dilshan being the top scores for SL. Jayawardene scored 89 runs off 51 balls, until he was bowled by Chris Jordan, ending his near century innings, and Dilshan scored a total of 55 runs coming off 47 balls, until he was caught by Chris Jordan, off the bowling of Jade Dernbach. Jordan and Dernbach shared 2 wickets each, as SL only conceded 4 wickets.

England got to their target of 190 in 19.2 overs, with only a few balls left until the end of the match. The two top scores for England were Alex Hales who knocked 116* (64) and Eoin Morgan who played very well, picking up 57 runs off 38 balls.

After a miserable run in 2014, England hit back with a much needed victory over Sri Lanka, in the World t20 tournament. Can England progress and win the t20 tournament? Be sure to give us your thoughts in the comment box below, and thanks for reading!

Could This Be The Worst Year Ever For England Cricket?

BY NISAR KHAN

England’s Ashes woes culminated in January, as the Three Lions looked to rebuild and bounce back. However, with their World Cup failures now unfortunately becoming imminent, could this set up for the worst ever year in England cricket?

England have been embarrassed on numerous occasions already

The downspiral began with the problematic Ashes tour down under in Australia. England were brutally defeated by the savage Aussies, dismantling them throughout the test and ODI series. Following that, Kevin Pietersen’s controversial departure would diminish the already descending England cricket reputation. The showings in West Indies were not too good, either.

As England lost to New Zealand, it seemed like they were off the pace again. Yes, you could argue that England were hard-done-by with the umpiring speculation and so on, but simply, it could be part of many more losses to come.

If England manage to qualify, they could go towards a big resurgence, but this could become such a bad year with the futures lying in wait.

Jonathan Trott’s controversial leave during the tour also brought about a lot of speculation and has seemed to find its place in the growing stigma towards England cricket.

With the Indians touring in the Summer, England will want to spare any more embarrassment, but can they do so?

If they thought The Ashes shift-up was of big changes, losing on another downspiral that could last throughout the year may cause the biggest outrage in English cricketing history. Now that’s a stretch, but if you look at it, are they stable enough?

What also goes against the Three Lions is that other teams, such as West Indies and India are on some good form that may not make England look bad in the games, but rule them out of World Cup contention which brings damages of its own.

England are in for a tough year if they can not regenerate quickly. This could lead to a huge downspiral in their reputation and support, and it may be sudden.
