Cristiano Ronaldo’s first and only goal of this World Cup proved to be the winner as Portugal ended their campaign with a win in Brasilia.

However, Portugal’s devastating 4-0 loss to Germany would make a goal difference they couldn’t catch and both Ghana and Portugal would be eliminated.

It did however mean that Germany and USA would go through.

An own goal by John Boye would be cancelled out by Gyan becoming the all-time leading African goalscorer at the World Cup. Ronaldo would pounce on a gift of a goal to seal the win for Portugal.

NEWSFLASH – Ghana’s side would not feature Kevin Prince Boateng or Sulley Muntari after an incident during training, where Muntari allegedly slapped an FA official and Boateng was in an altercation with the manager. This comes hours after Ghananian players reportedly received $3 million cash that they demanded from the government.

Portugal began with a larger proportion in possession and game influence, in a much sunnier stadium compared to Germany vs. USA, where rain poured in that simultaneous game.

Cristiano Ronaldo game close to scoring what could have been the goal of the tournament on the stroke of six minutes. The Ballan d’Or winner opened up his body as if he was preparing for a cross, but instead audaciously went for goal, only to hit the bar. Portugal delivered their message – they were going for the win.

Five minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick of an impeccable technique was denied by the Ghanaian keeper, Fatawu Dauda. Ghana’s little stints in possession eventually fell comfortably to Howard, but it was Portugal making the noise early on.

After Ghana were able to soak up some pressure, Portugal would come again. Ronaldo would connect fully with a bullet of a header, but yet again the keeper Fatawu Dauda kept it away from goal with an oustanding save. Portugal momentarily switched off allowing Gyan to register Ghana’s first chance on the other end, saved by Beto.

Following a quiet spell in the game, Portugal would begin to push Ghana on the backfoot, with John Boye slicing a cross into his own net to give Portugal the lead via an own goal. Devastating for Ghana, who could have been two down if Ronaldo’s later shot was through.

Rúben Amorim dragged his shot wide  a minute after as Portugal enjoyed their best spell in the game. Ghana had few numbers determined to go back and forth, leaving gaps for the Portugese to exploit.

Until the break, neither side really came close to threatening as much. However, Gyan appealed for a penalty when he appeared to be taken down by Bruno Alves on a turn, and Nani slashed over. All was still to play for with just an own goal being difference.

Ghana would be the team gaining a full head of steam as the second half opened. While Portugal had their half-chances when surging forward, it would take an intricate pass to put Gyan through.

Down the left, Asamoah picked Gyan out perfectly, allowing Ghana’s #3 to head it past Beto and become Africa’s all-time leading goalscorer in the World Cup.

Momentum was obtained for Ghana following the goal. However, none were convicted enough to really scream for goal and with ten minutes left it was tied up.

Then, Ghana failed to get rid of a troubling cross, as it was headed up into the air. Ghana keeper Fatawa Dauda pushed it out, falling straight to Ronaldo, stationary and smashing it past with his left foot to put Portugal back in the lead. Ghana could and should have done much, much better to stop that.

Match breakdown

Man of the Match: Cristiano Ronaldo
Had chances throughout, scored the winner and was much better than in his previous games.
Flop of the Match: Fatawa Dauda
Gifted Ronaldo for the winner, undoing his excellent saves prior.
Possession: Portugal 50% – 50% Ghana
Shots: Portugal 15 – 14 Ghana

Backlash?
A rather unusual 24 hours panning out for Ghana has ended in misery. First, $3 million in cash is delivered to the Ghana side on demand, before Boateng and Muntari are sacked from the squad. Then the own goal, then they get knocked out. $3 million for what? Ghana could be on course for an intense revamp.

Late to the Party
Cristiano Ronaldo finally scored – but it was too little, too late. Reprucussions from the crushing defeat to Germany would haunt them, creating an intangible goal difference they really had no chance of getting to. Ronaldo himself was brilliant, he had chances ranging from just a minute to the game – ironically, Fatawa Dauda stopped a triplet of Ronaldo’s early chances, only to gift the ball to him for his first goal. Ronaldo showed up too late.

Ghana Errors
It’s clear that both of the goals conceded Ghana could not have happened with more organised and structured defending. An own goal by John Boye speaks for itself but the second was literally a gift from Dauda, placing it out for Ronaldo to score, he could have tipped it over the bar or it could have been headed out by a defender, and no one could pick Ronaldo up either.

Germany and USA go through, while Portugal and Ghana fall short. Group G was a thrilling ride.

Ronaldo is yet to taste true glory in the World Cup, and for Ghana their misery ensues. Group G closes out how it began – in dramatic fashion.

Germany 2 – 2 Ghana

Group G, World Cup Game #28

Ghana’s approach was much different to their game with USA. They had to come to terms with Germany’s landslide in possession and relied on the counter-attack as the primary source of scoring.

It was hot and humid in Fortaleza, the conditions would take its toll on the players. After Howedes’ attempted break was consumed, Christian Atsu registered the first chance, orchestrating the play that lead to Gyan heading over from just yards out.

Germany fought back though as Ozil ran out of his path and lost possession before Toni Kroos shot was blocked, after Muller set it up nicely with a backheel.

Ghana had much more pace to them – Ayew was symbolic of this as he raced down the left but crossing left Neuer’s goal un-threatened. Likewise, Mesut Ozil set up Khedira but the Madrid midfielder’s shot was poor. Ozil was troubling, but up to then it was a scattering of half chances. On the right, Gotze broke clear but was not clinical in front of goal.

Neuer was busy with two plays in succession, as Muntari fired at him for the parry before Gyan lost the ball to his smothering collection.

Fatuwa Dauda’s goal was left gaping but luckily Gotze was unable to latch onto the end of Muller’s cross, any touch would have been goal bound.

Reflecting on the first 45 at half-time saw it as slightly action-deprived but Ghana would be satisfied as they kept the Germans at bay. Conditions were a nuisance.

Germany would take the lead early in the second half to complete a positive opening. Thomas Muller delivered in a cutting ball to Gotze, who got his head (and knee) on it to guide it into goal. Quality ball from Muller who adds an assist to his tally.

But just over three minutes later, Ghana would respond with an excellent headed goal by Andre Ayew, latching onto another excellent ball and seeing it past Neuer.

Germany were reeling – especially after Ghana flipped the game around.

Philip Lahm failed to get rid of a troubling ball and it fell to Gyan, racing towards Neuer, before smashing it past the German keeper to put Ghana ahead.

Goals would come soon again, though.

Schweinsteiger and Klose were subbed on. The latter would make the impact.

In his first touch of the ball, Klose poked in from Howedes’ header to equal the record for most World Cup goals. What a second half.

As the time remaining decreased, the intensity would increase.

First, Gyan smashed just wide before Klose did the same. Stoppage time emerged and we were treated to three extra minutes.

Ghana had the chance to seal a winner when they broke 3-on-2 from a corner. But a poor pass saw them ruled offside.

Muntari fouled Kroos with seconds to spare. A free-kick for Germany…

A header was blocked. The full time whistle blew to end a cracker of a game.

Superb, absolutely superb.

Ghana fight back from behind, then Germany do, to take a point in an amazing game. Battling through the humidity and relentless conditions, it’s an unforgettable one.

Ghana Fall Short as Brooks Seals Late USA Win

John Brooks scored an 87th minute winner for USA to dispatch Ghana in a thrilling Group G encounter that featured the fifth quickest goal in World Cup history.

Ghana 1 – 2 USA
Dempsey (1′), Andre Ayew (82′), John Brooks (87′)

11pm BST (UK time)
Estádio das Dunas, Natal
Group G, World Cup Game #14

Both sides were searching for a crucial win, considering the toughness of Portugal and Germany in a difficult Group G. Within seconds, the USA would be ahead.

It took less than half a minute for the United States to go ahead, as Clint Dempsey scored the fifth fastest goal in World Cup history. An excellently organised build-up allowed Dempsey to break into the box, striking it with his left across the keeper and prompting the emergence of USA chants in the stadium.

A rapid start for USA allowed them to assemble another chance though it was broken down. Ghana’s defence was subdued to start the game and in later stages made them vulnerable, especially on the flanks that were exploited.

There was plenty of space for USA to play, with little pressure by Ghana who were off the beat to open the game. The few crosses coming in from the early minutes were safely collected by Tim Howard who ensured security between the sticks. Asamoah Gyan was almost through after a cutting pass, but the Evertonian rushed out to pick up the ball.

After being on the ropes from USA’s fast start, the Ghanians began to find their rhythm. Down the right wing, Bopare’s cross to Gyan was just a few inches above Gyan which would have definitely tested goal.

USA were dealt a big blow in the form of Jozy Altidore. Picking up the ball in the right, he charged past in a fascinating footrace with Boye, but the American would pull up with hamstring problems and was in agony. He was stretchered off and replaced by Aron Jóhannsson.

Asamoah Gyan’s first significant chance forced a parrying save. Albeit off-balanced, the 28 year old drilled it low and forced a key save from Howard.

Muntari was involved in a minor scuffle with Jermaine Jones, after the American Jones caught Muntari in his boots and the Ghananian retaliated. The issue quickly diffused and no cards were dished out.

Ghana were worryingly exposed down the right and USA players were free to make runs. However they failed to test as much as they did earlier.

Jordan Ayew squandered a huge chance to draw level towards the end of the half, but his miss hit meant it bobbled towards a clearance.

TSMiNPUT Ghana were way off the beat to open the game and they paid for it with USA’s early breakthrough. They did improve but still, the quality of balls depressed their chances.

Ghana changed their gameplan going into the second half with an intense attack, and bombarding the pressure would eventually result in the illustrious goal being scored.

The introduction of Kevin Prince Boateng brought an instant creative spark to Ghana’s play and it worked with Gyan testing Howard.

But, for a solid half hour spell, USA stayed firm and resilient towards Ghana attack.

That would soon change though, when the equaliser came. Finally, Andre Ayew caused the breakthrough hitting it across the keeper to put the game level.

USA would have their luck drawn though from a corner. A break forced the corner and it was headed into goal by John Brooks.

All of a sudden, the game had been flipped over again, Ghana had been level for just 3 minutes and 58 seconds.

Unbelievable.

Five minutes of stoppage time allocated made for a dramatic culmination to the game, and Ghana were relentlessly pursuing the equaliser.

But time would run out.

USA embrace the joy after a massive win over the Ghanians, dejected, after giving all they could in the second. The thrills and spills of football in a nutshell.
