How Will Liverpool Fare In Absence Of Jordan Henderson?

BY NISAR KHAN

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will miss three of the Reds’ final four games this season after receiving a red card in Liverpool’s win over Manchester City on Sunday. The former Sunderland man has proved vital for this campaign, so how will Liverpool do in his absence?

Liverpool’s thrilling 3 – 2 triumph over Manchester City at Anfield was the latest in a ten-game win streak for the Reds, though a bittersweet feeling engulfed the emotion from the sending off to Jordan Henderson.

After losing the ball, an enthusiastic albeit fatigued Jordan Henderson went in for the ball occupied by Samir Nasri – sticking out a high foot in the process. There’s no doubt that the young England International will be distraught to miss the final, vital games.

Jordan Henderson has been one of the consistent picks along with Steven Gerrard throughout the season – and Liverpool’s reasoning for doing so is in full quality given his assets to the team.

While the skipper, Steven Gerrard, has drifted towards the holding midfield position, Jordan Henderson has controlled the rest of the middle while Coutinho plays in the Number 10 to provide Liverpool’s attacking star power.

Skipper’s influence: Gerrard, Henderson two seasons ago. FOOTBALL 365

That can be altered slightly too when Lucas Leiva is on rather than Coutinho, which would usually see the Brazilian play holding and for Gerrard and Henderson to play further up midfield.

Analysis of Jordan Henderson’s Opta stats would show how quickly he helps Liverpool turn defense to attack, which is why Liverpool have been so ferocious on the counter attack.

Although his work of ball-winning, then thrusting it upfield towards the likes of Sturridge and Suarez, may sometimes go unsung, Henderson is vital for Liverpool. So, who can replace him?

Rodgers’ rotations throughout the season could bring you to Joe Allen or Lucas Leiva – the latter of who would probably be favored more. This would, though, mean that Gerrard would surrender his holding role to the Brazilian though he could dictate things further up.

Without Henderson, they’ll need more avid and encouraged ball-winning in the middle of the park – can they get this done? Obviously the majority have potential to adapt, but Henderson is on great form, moving from strength-to-strength in Liverpool’s title surge.

An uncanny combination of defensive work and key passes make him a hybrid bridge for Liverpool to counter upon – without this, they may be slower taking alternative routes. There will need to be much more fluidity between the midfielders who will need to pass to one another rather than working on holding, attacking etc. individually.

Philipe Coutinho may be impacted as a result also. In Liverpool’s win over Manchester City, Coutinho seemed pleased to get more play forward and help in the attack rather than just sitting about the No. 10. This was aided by Jordan Henderson. Now, without him, he’ll have to take up more midfielding priorities.

Coutinho and Henderson have been vital to Liverpool’s prominence in midfield. © LIVE FOR LIVERPOOL

Jordan Henderson off the team for the next three games will be a slight hindrance to Liverpool, though their form – assembling a 10-game win streak – puts them in the driver’s seat, and making changes to become accustom will be vital.

The worst-case for Henderson is to see Liverpool somehow lose grip of the title in his absence, he will be undoubtedly distraught.

Jordan Henderson is scheduled to make his return for Liverpool when his suspension ends, meeting Newcastle at Anfield on May 12 in the final game of the season.

Everton Decimate Gunners At Goodison, Liverpool Hold Tight To Shut Out Hammers

BY NISAR KHAN

Everton catapulted themselves right back into contention for fourth place as they thrashed Arsenal at Goodison Park while Liverpool picked up an anxious away win over West Ham in a game that featured controversial decisions in Sunday’s Premier League double-header.

The Merseyside teams made significant advances in their respective races for either the title or Champions League football.

In the first of two games featured on the Super Sunday schedule, Everton ran riot in an Arsenal decimation at Goodison Park.

Arsenal, who have now dropped 10 points out of a possible 12 in their four previous games, were a recipient of Everton’s sweet retribution – which saw the Gunners beat them 4 – 1 in the FA Cup Quarterfinal.

It would be a much different story to the events that occurred in the Emirates around a month ago, with Steven Naismith altering the course of events early when he pounced on Lukaku’s saved shot to hit home.

After twenty more minutes of pressing and an uncomfortable spell for the visitors, Romelu Lukaku put his side two goals to the good with a low-fired shot past Szczęsny after dribbling past the watchful Arsenal players.

Video: Arsene Wenger’s post-match interview following Arsenal’s loss to Everton YOUTUBE / BBC SPORT

Mikel Arteta – unsurprisingly booed throughout the match – would conceded the third for Arsenal in the form of an own goal after one hour of play. The own goal was forced from terrific work by Kevin Mirallas as he pressurized the Spaniard into the own goal.

Another humiliating defeat down Merseyside spells more trouble for Arsenal. #WengerOut hashtags were prominent around Twitter. Frustration is clear for all to see as Arsenal went from battling at the top to fourth in the turn of the new year.

Everton made their intentions clear – Champions League football. Coming in with a hot run of form from March, they are going to put Arsenal in a very uncomfortable situation and even jeopardize Arsene Wenger’s record of always finishing in the top four.

Liverpool survived an anxious onslaught to end the game at Upton Park as they secured a mind-boggling ninth consecutive league win, putting them back at the top of the league after Chelsea topped it with a win over Stoke City the day prior.

The majority of the first half was goalless as the hosts kept them at bay and made for a frustrating outing for Liverpool, who had no clear-cut chances in the first half, that was until the late stages.

The general consensus of the penalty was blatant, as Luis Suarez’s touch was indeed handballed by the defender whom apologized straight after. Then up stepped the skipper, who remained composed as he slotted home with ease.

However, Guy Demel would equalize merely minutes later in controversial fashion. Simon Mignolet, who appeared to have been hit in the face by Andy Carroll mid-air, dropped the ball from the cross – falling to Guy Demel to score his first goal for the Hammers.

You be the judge.

Celebrations were paused for the home side with the linesman flagging. After a hot dispute with the referee, the goal was ruled legal and West Ham had equalized. As the first-half drew to a close in the play after, Liverpool were irate as they argued their cause to the referee.

As some called it “poetic justice”, Steven Gerrard scored his 50th penalty for the Reds when John Flanagan was taken down by Jaaskaleinen in another controversial ruling. “Two wrongs don’t make a right”, Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler described after the event, which lead too a successful penalty scored from the skipper.

West Ham’s onslaught was insufficient with its goal of equalizing, but it did cause Liverpool a lot of discomfort as they anxiously regained top spot in the league.

Comment & Analysis: Controversial Calls And Manager Mistrust

Controversy no doubt surrounded the West Ham vs. Liverpool fixture. Considering I’m a Liverpool fan I’d rather not comment on the calls to duck accusations of bias. However, that could prove dividend for Liverpool in the title race. I’ll just put it as Martin Tyler did, “two wrongs don’t make a right”.

As for Arsenal, it has just been a demise from Premier League contention. The only positive they can take is that they have no tough sides to follow in the run-up to the end of the season, although this does increase pressure on them to get close to maximum points to close out their campaign.

Everton, on some hot form right now, are going to really push Arsenal in the challenge for fourth place meaning Wenger will need to get his players attitude sorted.

You could see the gulf in contrast between the efforts of both sides. Everton were working their socks off for their gaffer while Wenger’s men’s attitude were even criticized by Wenger himself. This could be key in the race for fourth.

When all things were looking bright, when Arsenal got an incredible headstart to the season, people started to believe. Things have changed so fast that sees them facing more criticism. FA Cup and fourth place is now a must.

A terrific Sunday in the Premier League as the Merseyside teams stand tall and have increased the probability of both teams finishing in the top four.

Liverpool’s Defence May Be The Biggest Hindrance To Their Title Hopes

While The Reds may have won against Cardiff in emphatic fashion on Saturday, their defensive problems were yet again in full display as they went behind twice in the game. That alone could act as Liverpool’s greatest opposition in their hunt for a historic title win.

Fighting spirit: Fraizer Campbell struck to put Cardiff 2-1 up, but Liverpool were too strong, taking three points back to Anfield
Defensive errors were on full display for the Reds, although going on to win 6 – 3. GETTY IMAGES

The defensive errors and lapses were highlighted in Liverpool’s 6 – 3 victory over Welsh side Cardiff at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick, Martin Skrtel contributed a quick double and Daniel Sturridge added another as the Reds maintained their undefeated record in the New Year and continued with a full head of momentum going forward.

While optimism was sky-high for the club following their victory, when they went 2 – 1 down after Fraizer Campbell – defense was once again criticized. Liverpool tend to concede against the smaller clubs and this is a reason that needs to be addressed if they want to go on and win the title.

Fraizer Campbell scores the second for the hosts. FRED SPORTS

Defensive lapses were on display for this goal, Liverpool’s defending was lacklustre and allowed Campbell to get through for a shot on goal.

John Flanagan has allowed Fraizer Campbell to get behind him. Flanagan seems to be jogging back now rather than sprinting to help out. As a result, Daniel Agger is occupied with Campbell now, leaving a huge void in the box. The two centre backs are aligned well here though.

Daniel Agger is forced into a one-on-one situation with Fraizer Campbell. The Dane does well to get goal side of him, but since the box was not full of other players getting back in that area he had enough space to cut into the left and get a shot of goal. All this had been created by Flanagan allowing Campbell to get past him meaning he was out of the equation and therefore, with less defenders ready to box out, Campbell could get a shot off with plenty of time.

Fraizer Campbell unsurprisingly cuts in, Agger now trails him and Mignolet is drawn in. This forces Martin Skrtel to run across to with an attempted block, but opened up another, if not easier, option to pass across to his teammate who was half-occupied by the other full-back. Since Mignolet is drawn in, Campbell can fire towards the far post, and Skrtel could have got their quicker to block.

John Flanagan doesn’t even try to close down the space in order to aid the defenders. Meanwhile it is a complete mess in front of goal as Mignolet tries to space out but cannot, Agger and Skrtel have attempts in vein to block the shot and Johnson pulls off in an attempted block – all unsuccessful. It should simply have not happened as Campbell was outnumbered, an organized mess of a defense.

As a result of the rather shambolic defending, Campbell had two options, fire it at goal through an easy gap from failed blocking, or square it across to the now unmarked player – the same player of who was marked by Skrtel before he ran towards Campbell, and Johnson was marking him before he ran to goal. It could have been easier to square it across, but if that player was open then surely Liverpool should have done enough to facilitate for the unorganized defending.

The goal they conceded brought about much criticism to their defenders, and that is what make them equal with Tottenham for most goals against in the top seven teams in the league. Had it not been for their potent attack, Liverpool would have, no doubt, dropped points at Cardiff.

For Liverpool, their defending is the weak link. Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and others make them one of the most dangerous teams in the league and that is why they have scored the most in the league this season, helping to eclipse a comfortable goal difference that will be significant as the season winds down.

When they come to play Chelsea and Manchester City in back-to-back weeks at Anfield, their defense must stand firm. They know all to well that they can beat City or Chelsea’s defence, but both of those teams have a strong attacking output of their own – making their defending mishaps all the more in need of improvement.

And they also need to be aware that despite how prominent they have been all season, the likelihood is that Liverpool’s attack will be prone to off days here and there, meaning that if their defense does not hold up, they shall drop points – possibly crippling in such a close title race.

An example of when they did drop points was against West Bromwich Albion, their last draw before a six-game win streak. Kolo Toure’s error lead to an easy one-on-one finish as West Brom picked up a deserved point. A similar situation occurred prior, although it was just passed straight outside of the box, and it was blasted over the bar.

A sloppy mistake from Kolo Toure lead to an easy slotted goal past Mignolet. Dreadful stuff, and if that happens later on in the season it could be costly. Mistakes come at a price, of which will be multiplied as the title race intensifies.

Another demonstration of this was the thrilling encounter with Swansea City, where Daniel Sturridge’s brilliance paved the way to a 4 – 3 win. However, once again Liverpool made it a much harder task for themselves with poor defending to concede three goals from the Swans.

They also left it late against Fulham. For some reason it always seems like the games with the smaller clubs tend to be the more noteworthy, dramatic and teach the club more lessons.

Liverpool have came agonizingly close already to knowing that defensive mistakes cost. They won’t want another reminder coming in failure to win the league.

Liverpool’s Old Trafford Win Stimulates Title Race And Indicates Drastic Change

BY NISAR KHAN

Liverpool’s 3 – 0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday may become a cornerstone in a historic season for the Reds, while it also shows how much change has come about this season.

Liverpool got the league double over their Manchester rivals. CAUGHT OFFSIDE

Full match report and analysis for Manchester United 0 – 3 Liverpool here »

Steven Gerrard scored twice from the penalty spot along with Luis Suarez adding a third goal. We could have very well seen a few more goals scored at Old Trafford, with two other significant penalty shouts and chances. The Reds completely controlled the game, and in the process of doing so made a huge statement that sent shockwaves through the Premier League.

Change comes quick when you look at it from this perspective. Last season, when Manchester United went on to lift the Barclays Premier League trophy, Manchester United finished 28 points ahead of their Merseyside rivals, while at this time last year, Liverpool trailed by 19 points off Manchester United.

For this big change to happen within one season comes at a compromise between two extremes – a breakout season of Liverpool on incredible form while Manchester United have disappointed and plotted far off their title-winning season. The game at Old Trafford was a complete exemplification of that.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney described the match as “one of the worst in his career”. TELEGRAPH

This win could also come as a vital title race stimulant for Liverpool, whose extraordinary run of form sees them drop only four points (two draws) in their league games from the New Year. They are on one huge hot streak currently, and going into the wind-down of the Premier League season, this win could be the difference.

Not only did Liverpool capitalize on Chelsea’s stunning loss at Villa Park, but they made a statement in beating a team that has overshadowed them in the Premier League era. Could this mean that over twenty years of painful absence from a league trophy could come to an end?

As all things in sport, its not that simple. Liverpool are in the title race but many continue to write them off. However this win emphasizes their run of form to really push for the title. It’s close, and that is what makes the Old Trafford win all the more important.

As for Manchester United, more humiliation was suffered going hand-in-hand with the pressure on the club that increased by tenfold. David Moyes now needs to put on good performances for the remainder of the season and somehow keep his team, whose now low spirits overshadow their season, in the Champions League – a hard feat from two goals down at Olympiacos.

Rubbing It In: A Liverpool fan banner reads “David Moyes is a football genius” 101 GREAT GOALS

Patience is absolutely key for Manchester United now, and especially with this humiliation now nearing a worrying regularity, Manchester United suffering another set back – they need to change mentality from a Champions side to a team well in the Race for Europe.

The statement is made – powerful and prosperous for Liverpool, while a purgatory of patience for Manchester side. If they could have saved one last thing about the season it would be to put a dent in Liverpool’s title hopes – and they failed miserably in doing so, unfortunately.

Liverpool Dominate Man United At Old Trafford, Gerrard Scores Twice From Penalty Spot

BY NISAR KHAN

Steven Gerrard scored two penalties as Liverpool cruised to a dominant 3 – 0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Domination: Steven Gerrard scored two penalties in the match. PREMIERLEAGUE.COM

Score: Manchester United 0 – 3 Liverpool
Goalscorers: Gerrard (pen x 2), Suarez
Stadium: Old Trafford
Date: Sunday 16 March 2014

Steven Gerrard scored a penalty on either half while Luis Suarez added a third goal in a dominant performance from the Reds.

“We came here to win the game. We need to move on very quickly. We showed today that we are genuine contenders and will be here right till the end for this”, said Gerrard to Sky Sports after the game. Steven Gerrard become Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer against Manchester United.

Manchester United controlled possession in the early few minutes of the game, while Liverpool pressed them back restricting them to Liverpool’s attacking half. The visitors were by far the more attacking minded, with Daniel Sturridge scuffing an early chance as Jordan Henderson tracked his great run with a through ball. To the relief of Manchester United fans, Daniel Sturridge was unable to beat David De Gea at the far post and his shot went flying into a bunch of Manchester United fans in the stands.

Penalty appeals seemed a recurring theme throughout the game, with one coming as early as the sixth minute. Luis Suarez had a decent appeal as it appeared that Phil Jones and/or Marouane Fellaini clipped him inside the box.

It would take over eighteen minutes before Manchester United were able to get a shot on goal, Wayne Rooney was controlling the play in midfield yet lacked quality, with his attempted cross to Robin van Persie going out for a throw-in. Robin van Persie got the first shot on goal for the Champions, but it was poor and fired straight at Mignolet for the Belgian to easily collect.

Old Trafford’s home fans were far from comfortable in the game especially early on, with Manchester United playing far too defensively for their liking. That in addition with the effect of a derby game creates a restless viewing.

Daniel Sturridge continued to make some promising runs as United’s centre-halves failed to pick him up. Another through ball put the Englishman in a threatening position from the near post, where he intricately dummied a shot to see of Nemanja Vidic, followed up poorly with a left-footed shot straight at the keeper. Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson were in better space, yet the opportunity went begging.

Despite a nervewracking start to the game for Manchester Untied as their opponents controlled the game, possession evened out around the thirty-minute mark, as approximately 25% of possession was distributed on each side of the pitch, while 50% was contested in the middle of the park.

Joe Allen was denied of a career-high goal against the Red Devils. The opportunity originated from some lovely skill by Daniel Sturridge who cut it across to the midfielder, not capitalized on though as De Gea saved comfortably.

John Flanagan received the first booking of the game, and it was quite some time coming after being built up from a series of fouls from the young full-back. Rafael was booked soon after as he fouled Steven Gerrard during an attempted clearance, and moments later at the other side of the pitch, he came razor-close to getting sent off. Luis Suarez’s attempted cross into the box was stopped by Rafael with his hand, and a penalty was awarded. Steven Gerrard calmly stepped up and slotted it to the right while De Gea went the other way, and Liverpool took the deserved lead in the game.

While he embraced the glory of another goal against Manchester United in his celebrations, Steven Gerrard was in a bit of pain after clashing heads mid-air with Marouane Fellaini. The former Everton man Fellaini got worse-off from the collision, with a big cut that required treatment.

As the final five minutes of the half approached, Manchester United enjoyed their best spell of the game, as Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini linked up to get a shot on goal. Liverpool had a let-off soon after, with Robin van Persie found in plenty of space to cut and turn, but his shot rattled of Martin Skrtel out for a corner kick.

Wayne Rooney had the closest chance of the game for the hosts in the 44th minute, but it would be denied emphatically by Simon Mignolet with a big save from the top corner. On the rebound, Rooney attempted a volley that was well-blocked from Martin Skrtel. Manchester United would go into the break with some sense of enthusiasm, although overshadowed by Liverpool brimming with optimism with a superb performance and going into the lead that was deserved.

Any so-called sense of enthusiasm for Manchester United, who finished the first half strongly, was almost instantaneously disposed of 24 seconds in as Steven Gerrard scored from the penalty spot, as Manchester United conceded two penalties at Old Trafford in the Premier League for the first time.

Joe Allen was fouled in the box, meaning the skipper would step up and score the penalty hitting it in same direction, with De Gea going the same way, and Gerrard scored. Euphoria for Liverpool was clear as daylight with the skipper going towards the camera and kissing it.

From then on in, it was strength-to-strength for Liverpool, and a recession for Manchester United on a continuous downspiral thorught the game. The rare chances that came for Manchester United were ill-converted with only one shot on target in the game.

Liverpool were awarded another penalty as Daniel Sturridge was fouled from behind by Nemanja Vidic, as a result Vidic received his fourth career red card vs. Liverpool and Steven Gerrard was on the spot to score a hat-trick. Gerrard went the opposite direction and his penalty rattled the woodwork, ultimately meaning that he would not get a hat-trick, being subbed off for Lucas Leiva in the 87th minute.

Luis Suarez enjoyed a significant moment at the ground when he scored Liverpool’s third goal. The Uruguayan broke through in front of De Gea and slotted it past him at ease to remove memories of his controversy in the ground in exchange for a triumph.

The Reds comprehensive victory was finished with the full-time whistle, as the fans at the ground were silent, with Liverpool climbing 14 points clear of their Manchester rivals.

Comment, Breakdown & Analysis: Penalties, Patience, Prosperity

There could have been up to six penalties in the game, but definitely there should have been a fourth. Daniel Sturridge was definitely clipped after the third goal and that should have been a penalty. Regardless, the goals for Liverpool were deserved considering the vast threshold they had on the game and the rare chances for Manchester United.

Patience is something that Manchester United fans are having to endure for this season. Its another humiliating loss, and worst of all to Liverpool. They must stick by now to prevent even worse.

The win brings in plenty of confidence for Liverpool who can really surge for the title. What a big win of epic proportions it is.

This is one of the best performances. Manchester United were completely shut down in the game and Liverpool controlled it. More humiliation for United.

Liverpool pick up a win that could go really far from now on as they shut down Manchester United with a clinical performance. Liverpool run riot at Old Trafford – who thought that we’d ever be saying that.

Liverpool Now Imperative For England’s Rio Hopes, Effect On Current Campaign

BY NISAR KHAN

Liverpool have become a key part to England’s World Cup campaign in a small period of time. Not only does this make them imperative for the months to follow, but also has an increased strain on their current club campaign.

Liverpool had five starters in England’s International friendly with Denmark last week. THIS IS ANFIELD

In Engand’s one goal win over Denmark last week at Wembley Stadium, five Liverpool players started for the side. Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge made up the Liverpool backbone for the England squad.

This came as an epiphany for many who realized just how important The Reds have suddenly become for England’s World Cup hopes come the Summer. Now they will be determined to keep up the good performances to ensure that they become an important part of England. And that is a lot of pressure.

However, it can reap plenty of benefits. Injuries aside, it will no doubt be a World Cup warm-up, and one big one, considering its a title race, leading up to the Summer.

Glen Johnson got the full-back position as England defeated Denmark 1 – 0. While he has not done much significant for Liverpool this season it seems like he is well trusted for the job on the right flank.

Then there is Steven Gerrard, the captain, and the man who will send his troops in search for World Cup glory over 48 years in the making in Brazil. For Steven Gerrard, many say this could be his last World Cup, and if so then this makes it all the more important.

But as football goes, we never really know. Steven Gerrard is the workhorse type of player, so his long career may not be ending, just yet.

Jordan Henderson has quickly improved over the past two seasons and England caps show it in full light. It is a remarkable story of his improvements to an important part for both Liverpool and England – and Hodgson knows it as both the former Liverpool and current England manager.

Raheem Sterling’s rise to prominence has been eye-opening for many. Under Brendan Rogers the winger has matured to an extent of looking towards the World Cup. He’s really thrived for Liverpool with plenty of goals being scored, and with Sturridge striking up front, this will only help him solidify a place in Rio.

Then there’s Daniel Sturridge. Pitted as the biggest goal output for England in the World Cup, England will rely on him a lot, but so are Liverpool, meaning a lot of pressure. Can he perform? This will be our biggest chance to really find out.

Liverpool are still well in the title race, and in spite of Chelsea’s margin opening up (bare in mind of the games in hand for the others in the top four), they have a lot to focus on. Although they don’t seem the bunch to be torn apart from World Cup rivalry, especially with Luis Suarez set to meet them in the group stage as part of Uruguay, it will play some factor, regardless of it’s magnitude.

And then there is injuries too, with a demanding climax to the season that could jeopardize, plenty of pressure on England and Liverpool.

Liverpool’s England five will be very busy leading up to the Summer. How will it pan out for the Reds as part of the Three Lions?

Six Reasons Why Liverpool Can Win The League

BY NISAR KHAN

With the title race heating up week-by-week, speculation is running rampant as to who remains in the race to capture the title. Liverpool have made their intents to go for a historic league win, and here are six reasons why the Reds can go on to league triumph this season.

IMAGE COURTESY: Empire of the Kop

Although many have been quick to dismiss Liverpool as title contenders, the possibility of the Reds winning their first title in over two decades is well and truly alive.

Brendan Rogers’ side currently lies four points off the top spot – and with twelve games still to play in the season, a lot can change that may see Liverpool climb atop the league.
It’s going to be one very hotly contested title race as the season ticks down to an enthralling culmination. Over the years the football has never been short of spectacular or historic moments, and Liverpool winning the league could easily be another one. They have one of the best striking partnerships in Europe and a manager that knows what he’s doing – along with other reasons. Here are the top five as to why Liverpool can lift the Premier League trophy in May.

Arsenal Can’t Keep Up The Pursuit

It’s clear that Liverpool’s demolition of Arsenal at the Anfield made a huge statement and demoralized the Gunners, possibly derailing them for the remainder of the season.

After their loss to Liverpool, the Gunners went on to deliver a subdued performance at the Emirates in a goalless draw with Manchester United, of where many problems where outlined such as lack of character and urgency, poor chance conversions and holding back to a great extent. Arsenal have twelve league games remaining as part of a tough schedule that includes a Champions League tie with Bayern Munich. Arsenal’s resources are diluted around some areas, and that can only be thinned further during the tough schedule in February and March.

Mesut Ozil’s recent criticism will only add to the growing backlog of Arsenal’s problems going into the remainder of the title race. In addition, Olivier Giroud has a lot of pressure on him considering that the Frenchman and Nicklas Bendtner are the only true strikers in the squad. Should Giroud get injured or go into a slump, Arsenal’s goal scoring outputs could minimise significantly.

Should Arsenal fail to keep up the race for the title and drift away from the top, Liverpool exploit the opportunity to lock horns with Chelsea and Manchester City, while Arsenal can also take some points from the big clubs to pave the way for Liverpoool’s title win. Having Arsenal out of the equation would result in Arsenal’s title probabilities increasing.

However, this reason might become less of an issue with Sanogo looking better, and Arsenal bouncing back by defeating Liverpool in the FA Cup, and Sunderland in the league.

Brendan Rogers Is The Ideal Manager

Brendan Rogers is one of the best managers that Liverpool have had in the Premier League era. Under his authority, Liverpool have looked a much improved team and are enjoying some of their best form with the Northern-Ireland-native in charge.

Liverpool has a true voice of reason within the club that has rubbed off onto the squad and created great results. From the incorporation of young players, to speaking out in press conferences and pushing his players to do better, Brendan Rogers is working wonders for Liverpool.

What makes Brendan Roger’s leadership such a smooth ride for his players is that he stays out of controversy. While Mourinho and others are voicing their title hopes, mind games or criticising other teams, Rogers has made his team just get down to business. He’s backed his team to win too which would be huge encouragement for the players who have grown very fond of him during his tenure with the club.

They Showed Championship Character

Liverpool’s thrilling 3 – 2 win over relegation battlers Fulham was a display of true Championship character, as skipper Steven Gerrard fired home a penalty in stoppage time.

It was one of their most telling performances of the season. On the verge of losing, they would fire back two goals within the last ten minutes of the game to pick up three vital points that will go a long way. They could have easily rested on the basis that they had demolished Arsenal, and dismissed the result, but they fought on to pick up a huge win.

They went from winning at ease at Anfield to a last-gasp win at Craven Cottage. The contrast of those games within four days showed us what Liverpool are about, resilience and most importantly, class.

Daniel Sturridge & Luis Suarez Are The Best Striking Duo In The League

The lethal partnership of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez has worked wonders for the side and now has put them in contention for Liverpool’s first league win in 24 years.

Earlier on in the season, this argument was heavily challenged by Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero, the duo from Manchester City who were running riot week-in and week-out leading to the New Year. However, during that time, Liverpool’s strikers would show that they were the most effective.

Between them, they currently have 39 league goals in total and are poised to break records leading to the end of the season. Daniel Sturridge’s form has been exceptional as of late, scoring in seven consecutive games breaking Liverpool’s record. Meanwhile for Liverpool, Luis Suarez incredible form, along with securing his new contract at the club, have made this duo lethal and unstoppable.

In Sturridge’s first match back from injury, he would link up with Suarez almost instantaneously to make the difference, a real lesson of how important the two where to Liverpool. Furthermore, they complement each other very well, creating assists for one another to forge a partnership of title-winning implications.

Midfield Prominence

Liverpool’s midfield roster has signficantly improved and increased from past season, with players such as Phillipe Coutinho taking a more important role thus allowing more flexibility in side choices and also reducing the pressure on Steven Gerrard – with him still being the midfield anchor.

We’ve seen Jordan Henderson also rise to the occasion for a more important role which makes it a key part of Liverpool’s campaign, with plenty of good service to both Suarez and Sturridge.

They Are Hungry

It’s been twenty-four years since Liverpool last won the league. That’s a time period of excessive time for a top club like Liverpool to not taste the sweet glory.

Hunger is really the fuel to the fire for this Liverpool side. They definitely have the ability and resources to go on and win the league, now it’s a case of their desire to get their hands on the Premier League trophy. It’s hunger that provides the extra push, like we saw in their big win at Fulham, and in a close title race like this, it could make the all-important difference.

———————

Liverpool are still not out of the question of winning the league for the first time in 24 years. But they’ll need to keep up the pressure on their opposition with teams returning to great form to create a climate that makes the title challenge very difficult.

A few games after this, it could look a very different situation – Liverpool could be out of it, or even top.

The title race is far from over for the Reds.

Everton, Liverpool Hit Three Each at Incredible Derby Classic

EVERTON 3 – 3 LIVERPOOL
KICK-OFF: 23 Nov 2013 at 12:45pm, Goodison Park
Coutinho ‘5’, Mirallas 8′, Suarez 19′, Lukaku 72′, Lukaku 82′, Sturridge 89′

EVERTON – Daniel Sturridge scored an 89th minute equalizer to tie it all up in an incredible game at Goodison Park in the Merseyside Derby.

Philipe Coutino edged his side into the lead early on after Luis Suarez provided the assist.

But minutes later, Kevin Mirallas would equalize off some poor-defending after Leighton Baines’ long-range free-kick.

Luis Suarez would take advantage of defensive errors as he beat the wall, and Tim Howard with a curled, low shot to put Liverpool ahead.

In the second half, a double from Romelu Lukaku within ten minutes would set Goodison Park up for a huge win.

But it was not to be, as a late goal from Daniel Sturridge, coming off from the bench, finished the game with both scoring three each.

In a game filled with talking points, every goal coming from a set-piece, fouls and speculation, it was an absolute classic.

A huge roar was greeted as the hosts got the game underway. With an electric atmosphere at Gooidson Park, Everton passed the ball around for the opening stages with Liverpool putting on the pressure.

The Toffees provided early encouragement for the home fans with the majority of early possession while Liverpool looked to settle them down.

Steven Gerrard had the first corner of the game four minutes in. It would fall to Luis Suarez, flicking it on to Coutinho – who controlled the ball before striking it into goal, scoring his first Derby goal after just four minutes.

While Liverpool’s early goal was the start needed, Everton would look to fire back, and that they did.

Kevin Mirallas flicked the ball in from close range of Leighton Baines’ distant free-kick. An acrobatic effort would put Everton back in it, capitalizing of poor defending from Liverpool. It was even once again, with Goodison Park with an even more electric atmosphere.

Everton came close to a second, minutes after, but Romelu Lukaku was thwarted by Simon Mignolet who risked life and limb (and a red card maybe) to deny him on the edge of the area.

Following a frantic start to the game, around eighteen-minutes in and the game had finally settled. Liverpool were putting together a string of passes, while Everton were still well in contention.

Luis Suarez had a free-kick in the 19th minute in some promising territory. Tim Howard set the wall up, but the wall would not stop it, as Suarez curled it low beating Howard with a stunning free-kick to put Liverpool ahead.

With half-an-hour of play passed, Liverpool were still in the lead. The game had quietened down with no refereeing issues up to that point. Everton were trying for the equalizer but found themselves playing from the back far too often.

Ross Barkley was the recipient of the first booking of the game when he dived from Lucas’ challenge. That was the busiest that Phil Dowd had to be thus far.

But he was busier, just moments later. Kevin Mirallas’ fouled Luis Suarez with a high foot that resulted in a very lengthy stoppage, as Phil Dowd took his time to present a yellow card to Kevin Mirallas.

Should Kevin Mirallas have been sent off for this foul?

With half-time approaching, Liverpool finished with a threshold of the game as Everton grew frustrated. More ‘Derby’ fouls were coming in, but Liverpool finished with the lead.

Luis Suarez gingerly made his way back on to the pitch for the second half, but despite his injuries, Leighton Baines would be replaced by Gerard Deulofeu. Deulofu would almost make an impact as Liverpool were sloppy of a throw-in. Going one-on-one with Mignolet, he hit in straight at Liverpool’s keeper.

A let off for Liverpool so to speak, but it was a word of warning from the Toffees.

Everton’s chances increased, but Joe Allen could have well and truly settled it for the visitors when it was him and Suarez up against the keeper. Allen could have tapped it past Howard or passed it to Suarez for a tap-in, but he chose neither and hit it wide.

Romelu Lukaku caused another scare, but another save from Simon Mignolet – keeping Everton once again at bay in the 63rd minute.

On the 70th minute, Lukaku’s goalless game would continue as he was once again thwarted by fellow Belgian Simon Mignolet, who made a much more comfortable save. A few minutes later, Lukaku would finally beat Mignolet.

After his free-kick was deflected but strongly saved from Mignolet, Lukaku got into the box and struck it low to equalize in the 72nd minute, setting the fans on euphoria at Goodison Park with their team back in it.

GIF: Romelu Lukaku equalizes for Everton

Brendan Rogers looked to make an attacking statement by putting on Sturridge as he replaced Lucas.

Set-pieces would once again come into play as Romelu Lukaku scored in the 82nd minute with a powerful header of a corner just ten minutes after equalizing.

With Liverpool looking to equalize late, a foul in the third quarter of the pitch had Gerrard standing over a long range free-kick.

Gerrard whipped it in, with Sturridge getting the header on to it, beating Tim Howard to equalize making it 3 – 3, a huge impact off the bench.

Daniel Sturridge thought he scored the winner in stoppage time but was offside.

And with that, the final whistle would blow with both teams going off satisfied after a hard-fought game. Even by Derby standards, an absolutely fantastic game of football.

THE BREAKDOWN
Breaking down the game with analysis and the main headlines

SET PIECES: The Difference as Every Goal Came from a Set Piece

Coutinho scored of a set-piece early on to give Liverpool the lead. But just minutes after, when Mirallas scored of a set piece, it was clear – Liverpool were vulnerable and defedning set-pieces was their weakness. Then, it was possibly the opposite when Luis Suarez scored in the 19th minute of a poor defensive set-up by the Toffees. Later on, Lukaku would score twice off set pieces, before Sturridge headed the equalizer from Gerrard’s free kick.

SUAREZ FREE-KICK: Sublime Goal, But Could Everton have done btter?

Luis Suarez scored a stunning free-kick to put Liverpool ahead. But after watching the goal again, the wall was a huge issue. Tim Howard made a mistake with a well, as it was just to easy for Suarez to curl it round and creep in from the bottom corner.

PHIL DOWD: Should there have still been 22 players on the pitch after the first half?

Kevin Mirallas may have only Phil Dowd to thank after him still being on the pitch when the first half whistle blew. His rash challenge on Luis Suarez left the Uruguayian with big marks on his leg and was very dangerous. Yet Phil Dowd’s hesitation and taking too long just left him to only justify the yellow.

SIMON MIGNOLET: Incredible Goalkeeping Performance Kept Game in Sight
Simon Mignolet had a fantastic performance in between the sticks. The amount of saves he had to make was unreal, although conceding two late on. Had he not have been on top form, Everton may have dominated.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku’s chances came throughout the game. In spite of him missing out, he continued to work and deservedly scored the double. Simon Mignolet deserves recognition too after fantastic goalkeeping.

Everton Thwart Liverpool’s Chance to go Top

Liverpool were on course to go top, but Everton were defiant and kept them at bay. Outstanding.

GAME OF THE SEASON CANDIDATE? No Doubt!
Well, well, well. What a game. Props to both managers, and players. It did not come down to refereeing despite the numerous fouls. The highest scoring Merseyside Derby in over 80 years provided great entertainment. No doubt game of the season thus far.

THE FINAL SAY
Opinions on the game from the reporter

What a treat. An oustanding game of football to watch. It provided drama, plenty of goals, and everything you wanted from a derby. Both teams can be satisfied as they threw it all at each other. It comes down to the little things, even with these don’t give either team the win. A thriller of a draw.

The best game of the season to date, as Everton and Liverpool provided a derby for memory.

Set-pieces proved the difference in the game, as all goals came from them.

Goodison Park witnesses a superb game. Just like a derby should be, it was thrilling and dramatic.
Everton and Liverpool battle end-to-end in an extraordinary game. Goals, drama, tension, thrilling moments and speculation – it had it all.

Gunners Firmly Grasp Top Spot After Overcoming Liverpool in Entertaining Encounter

ARSENAL 2 – 0 LIVERPOOL
LIVE – Santi Cazorla 19′, Ramsey 59′

KICK-OFF:  Saturday 2 November 2013 at 5:30pm (GMT)
(GAMEWEEK 10) at Emirates Stadium, London.

LONDON – Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey struck home emphatically for the Gunners in their victory over Liverpool as the league leaders thwarted the visitors’ attempt to topple them.

Rejoice: Santi Cazorla celebrates in front of fans after scoring the opener

Liverpool got the game underway and showed a glimpse of a threat early on with Luis Suarez almost getting on the end of a long ball after moving off Mertesacker.

The visitors formation was already working in the way Rogers wanted, as Sakho moved forward from the back along with Henderson pitching in on some early attacks.

Arsenal were stringing together a few passes in the early stages, but it was a tough task against the visitors whose players continued to press and press.

Typical Arsenal would come close to opening the scoring, as Thomas Rosicky had a chance on goal with a great one-two pass. The shot was parried for a corner by Mignolet, and the corner was cleared back out to the middle of the park.

Jordan Henderson almost caught Arsenal off guard, as Santi Cazorla was dispossessed. Luis Suarez was awaiting the pass, and it opened up a huge gap for Henderson to run, but after some hesitation, he attempted to pass it to Sturridge allowing the keeper to intercept. Early let-off for Arsenal, Henderson could have struck that and put them in trouble.

The early impressions of the game in the first ten minutes or so were clear. The game was being contested in the middle of the park. Liverpool’s five midfielders were standing toe-to-toe with Arsenal’s midfielding prowess.

Liverpool had a very promising start to the game, but the complexion would change instantly when Santi Cazorla opened the scoring.

Sagna powered down the right flank, crossed it into the Spaniard whose powerful header rattled the woodwork. However, he pounced on the rebound to bomb it into goal.

And with that goal, Arsenal seemed to instantly take a threshold of the game. Henderson and Gerrard were dispossessed in the midfield, and Mignolet was forced a save. Another dangerous ball came in, but fortunately for Liverpool, not close to any players.

Bacary Sagna was the first recipient of a yellow card in the game after taking down Suarez when he looked to break. Some Liverpool players were in temporary disarray as the advantage was not called. Steven Gerrard took the free-kick, but although the header forced a save from Szczęsny  it was offside.

Steven Mignolet once again was brought into action to deny Aaron Ramsey after Arteta put him through. Moments later, Cissokho would receive a booking for a rash, frustrated tackle on Bacary Sagna. The free-kick prompted another save from Mignolet, who was steadfast in eliminating any threat.

As half-an-hour of play came in the Emirates, the game settled down with Arsenal having more possession. An early bright start from the visitors had been turned around from a goal, but neither team were playing badly. Arsenal came off an onslaught of chances to Liverpool, meanwhile a chance fired back from the Reds simply was not good enough.

Aaron Ramsey could have set up for Arsenal’s second in the 32nd minute, as Giroud set him open for a cross with a lovely lay-off. However, the Welshman’s cross went over the men into the box, and Cissokho cleared to safety.

Although looking dangerous on their attacks, Liverpool managed to counter them due to last-ditch errors from the Gunners. On the other hand, Liverpool were not effective on the break.

Lucas Leiva’s error in the midfield could have costed Liverpool as Ramsey pounced on the ball, but lack of support up front for Arsenal left them as easy pickings for the away-side’s defenders.

Arsenal’s determined defending was on full display when they broke down a threatening spell from Liverpool on the edge of the box. Suarez looked to turn through two defenders, but he was kept at bay firmly.

On the brink of half-time, Santi Cazorla had another shot at goal after his chance came from a let-up in possession from the visitors. It went wide and Mignolet was not needed on that instance.

The first half whistle blew ending a very entertaining forty-five minutes of football. Liverpool came out all guns ablaze before Santi Cazorla’s goal against the run of play would change the complexion of the game and put Liverpool on the back foot. For Liverpool, the problem is the let-ups in possession, as they lost it numerous times in the first half. Arsenal could have put a few more past, but due to Mignolet’s effort and lack of support up front, this was not the case.

Liverpool made a change in the start of the second half as Coutinho replaced Cissokho. A logical substitution as Cissokho had a poor first half, and maybe the Brazillian would offer a spark needed.

Arsenal had a slow start to the second half but soon would get into the flow with a series of close chances from Giroud and Ramsey. Liverpool once again slowed down, and when Ramsey had the opportunity, he indeed made light of it in stunning fashion.

Awaiting for the ball to bounce, Ramsey looked to have plenty of time on his hands before a long-range strike into the top corner. Stunning goal that made it a long way to go for Liverpool.

GIF: Ramsey’s stunning strike for Arsenal’s second goal

With that goal, Arsenal had an instant grip on the game with Liverpool looking unorganized and shaken up with an hour of play passed.

Victor Moses came on for John Flanagan, as Liverpool looked to cut down their deficit in a much more attacking manner, of course.

Arsenal’s first substitution of the game came seventy-one minutes in as Nacho Monreal replaced Thomas Rosicky. Their second came around six minutes later when Kieran Gibbs made way for Vermaelen after picking up an injury.

The visitors almost pulled one back with a troubling spell from Coutinho’s crosses. After a clearance fell out to Gerrard, he sent the through ball down to the Brazillian crossing it in and Sturridge fed it to Suarez whose shot went out for a corner in Liverpool’s best spell of the game.

Arsenal seemed to grow more certain as the game progressed, and made it clear with substitutions for a more relaxed playing style.

Liverpool continued to work however, as they looked to get one back and put them on track for another, it almost came when Luis Suarez shot went past the post, but had he fed it to his striking partner Sturridge, it would have been a certain goal.

But Liverpool were unable to snatch the goal late on, as the full-time whistle blew with Arsenal winning 2 – 0. A huge win for Arsenal.

THE BREAKDOWN
Breaking down the game with analysis and the main headlines

FIRST HALF: Liverpool Come Out Storming, But Cazorla Goal Changes Things Drastically

THE BATTLE: Middle of the Park
As predicted, the game was contested and to an extent won in the midfield. The clash of formations was entertaining to watch, but Arsenal managed to overcome them and keep their lead.

THE PROBLEMS: First Half Difficulties
What cost Liverpool or at least put them at risk was there loss of possession that became a relatively regular occurance in the game. Meanwhile Arsenal’s attempt to extend their lead were thwarted by the lack of support up front.

BELIEF: Arsenal Going Forward
With a tough schedule ahead, a win over rivals is big for the club. Something definitely for solidification and a big win. Five points clear.

MAN OF THE MATCH
Who was the best player in the game?

Aaron Ramsey

A terrific strike from Aaron Ramsey was not the only reason why he is the Man of the Match. The Welshman had plenty of possession and created plenty of chances. Hard-working throughout the game and a great outing for him and his teammates.

THE FINAL SAY
The game in a summary with analysis.

A fantastic game of football. Liverpool had a great start to the game but Arsenal managed to ware them down and had a great response. The goal against the run of play turned things around and put the odds in Arsenal’s favor, thus allowing them to control the game before capitalizing on the win. Liverpool did well, but the better team won. Great game.

Arsenal finished the day five points clear at the top of the table following their win over Liverpool.

With a tough schedule ahead that sees Dortmund in the week and Manchester United on Sunday, the victory is a great set-up going forward.

Liverpool were unable to keep at the pace and Arsenal were able to take control, but a great effort from both sides that sees Arsenal the victors.

Arsenal prevail in a hard-fought contest at the Emirates to defy Liverpool’s early onslaught. The Gunners secure another weekend at the top with more hard games to follow.

Flying High: Liverpool are undefeated this season. (via PremierLeague.com)

STARTING LINE-UPS:

MATCH REPORT:

Both teams were prompt into action after kick-off with Manchester United getting a miniscule opportunity in the box within 20 seconds. Relentless pace continued from both teams, when Liverpool found themselves taking the first corner kick of the game just before four minutes.

Daniel Agger got a head on Steven Gerrard’s cross, which went to Daniel Sturridge of who headed it from the back of his head into the goal, marking a dream start for the hosts and Daniel Sturridge is on cracking form – what a way to celebrate his birthday too.

Daniel Sturridge’s goal was the third in three Premier League appearances this season (via LiverpoolFC.com)

The Red Devils struggled to get the ball up the pitch for the majority of the opening 10 minutes, although as time progressed they began to get more involved. Liverpool however continued to enforce dominance with the momentum of the goal.

As we reached the half-hour mark, Liverpool continued to have more control, although there were some very interesting tussles in the middle of the pitch. Pace slowed down a bit from earlier, but both teams were still very productive.

In stoppage time of the first half, Robin van Persie was protesting a refereeing decision when things between him and Steven Gerrard got heated. (But if you want proper fights, you might want to read what happened at UFC 164 last night).

The Reds went into the half-time break with the lead, Sturridge’s goal was all the difference in the first fourty-five minutes that gave Liverpool an edge over the Champions. With a fast-paced start to the game, things went to a more neutral stand-point. Although more chances looked promising from Liverpool, Manchester United’s share of chances could have had an opening in the Second Half.

Media preview

Manchester United made an obvious improvement at the start of the second half, with more chances being created and a lot more promising play. No chances came into fruition really, and chances were just sloppy. Liverpool got back to business and had Manchester United on the backfoot with a very positive spell.

Liverpool really went for it towards the end, but continued to keep the ball while Manchester United were relentless in search for an equalizer.

In the five minutes of stoppage time, Raheem Sterling came close with a cracking shot, but De Gea tipped it over the bar.

Liverpool mark three consecutive 1 – 0 wins to begin the season.

THE BREAKDOWN:

3 IN 3 FOR BIRTHDAY BOY
Daniel Sturridge’s goal against the Champions is his 3rd in 3 Premier League games this season. Really making a mark for Liverpool.

CONFRONTATIONS… BUT NOT AS MANY
While the Manchester United vs. Liverpool derby is renowned for a few confrontations, the ones in this game were nothing too malicious.

LIVERPOOL MAINTAIN 100% RECORD
With the win over the Champions, Liverpool have won all their games this season.

MOYES’ LOSING RETURN TO MERSEYSIDE
David Moyes came to Anfield numerous times in the past as part of the Merseyside Derby, but this time he returned as manager of Manchester United, and lost.

STATEMENT MADE BY LIVERPOOL
Liverpool have been all business this season with their start to the Premier League. With speculation now abuzz about a possible top 4 finish, beating the Champions is indeed the way to go.

STATS:

MAN OF THE MATCH:

TSM Man of the Match – Daniel Sturridge

THE FINAL SAY:

Fantastic win for Liverpool. It’s huge to beat the Champions at Anfield, this marks a great start for The Reds. But credit where credit is due, Manchester United held their own, the set piece may have got them beaten, but they held up well defending for the rest despite lack of effectiveness in front of goal. Liverpool and Manchester United had defense on locks from around the half-hour mark. Cracking game with a tense finish, the derby delivers again.

Liverpool overcome the Champions with yet another goal by key marksman, Daniel Sturridge. Liverpool make it 100% wins in the Premier League season – with prospects higher than ever with this huge win.
