Murray escapes Verdasco challenge

Andy Murray saw off Fernando Verdasco to book a place in the last four of this years championships after a brilliant comeback.

Murray found himself two sets down but produced a remarkable comeback to turn the match on its head late on and steal a shock win from Verdasco at the death just as the match seem poised to be settled on a tie break. Verdasco was impressive, firing venomous forehands and elegant backhands to flummox the Scot and seemed set for a shock victory over the number two seed. However, with the full support of the crowd, Murray was roared on to victory and cruised the third set 6-1 and won the fourth with less ease.

He has reached his first Wimbledon semi final but his condition remains in doubt after he needed to receive treatment after falling heavily on his left knee which was already strapped during the fifth point of the match. The match was delayed for five minutes.

The former US Open winner came back even stronger and cruised to a 6-2 6-4 7-6 (7-5) win in 2 hours and 16 minutes over Spaniard Ferrer who struggled with the skill and determination of the Argentine.

“It’s going to be dangerous if I don’t recover in the next few days,” Del Potro said of his knee.
“I was really close to pulling out, I felt a lot of pain. But the doctor gave me some massive pills.
“I think I played my best tennis in this match, I’m so happy with my level at this moment.”
Del Potro will now face the winner of Novak Djokovic and Thomas Berdych in the semi finals if he is fit enough to play.
