The first of two games in the twelfth day of action was an enthralling game between West Indies and Australia. West Indies won with merely two balls to spare, pushing Australia on to the brink of departure from the tournament.

Darren Sammy, captain of the winning side, hit successive sixes in a magnificent display where he hit 34 runs off 13 balls to see his side to victory.

Chris Gayle, although having a lackluster game prior, hit a half-century to give West Indies a big leap to open the chase.

However, the Aussies’ posted a challenging 178 runs that took its toll on West Indies, looking like they were on course for a loss with the task of chasing 49 runs from 21 balls.

West Indies had been provoked in the build-up to the match with plenty of ill-feeling taking over the press conferences. This time though, West Indies saved it with euphoric celebrations after a triumphant victory.

Australia thought they had the game in control with the second and third wickets coming with six runs of each other, looking to cause a spanner in the works for West Indies’ steady start.

21 balls remained from the game and the West Indies looked far from in the game. However, an elated partnership between Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy turned the game completely around, setting up for a big over, not as big as expected earlier, although having to chase twelve runs to win from the final over.

It would come down to the captain. Anxiety raised significantly for Windies’ fans as Darren Sammy failed to score from the first two balls of the over, and thus putting the game within Australia’s fingertips – that was until two consecutive sixes to win the game emphatically.

Exuberant, incredible celebrations would spontaneously ensue after Sammy’s winning six – the West Indies were emphatic in celebration, edging Australia towards elimination and getting back at them with superb acknowledgement of their win.

What a marvelous game of cricket. Yet again, the Twenty20 format keeps all on the edge of their seat, going down to the final over. It only takes a few good hits to completely change the complexion of the game – with this thriller being a prime example. And there was still an opportunity to see Chris Gayle express his excitement. After losing his footing when the victors flocked onto the pitch to celebrate, he lead the Gangnam dances to really rub it in.

Much less thrilling, though, was India’s win over the hosts Bangladesh. The Indians picked up their third straight win in the tournament to progress to the semi-finals.

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni were the final duo before India went onto win. Kohli was alongside Rohit Sharma as both hit half-centuries setting up for a comfortable and convincing win, and pushing Bangladesh pretty much near to the exit, too.

Amit Mishra headlined the superb bowling with 3-26 as Bangladesh totted 138 runs to start the game. The hosts’ real resistance came only with Anamal Haque adding 44, alas in vein, as Bangladesh edged further to exit.

The easy chase was concluded with MS Dhoni, hitting some big boundaries, and the winning shot, to keep the favorites well in it and seal their destination at the Semi-Finals of the tournament.

Comment: Captains’ Winners, Thrillers

Yet again, the tournament continues to deliver. Cricket going down to the wire has become a regular occurrence, much to the euphoria of cricket fans, and West Indies’ win over Australia showed it all.

Australia now face a very tough task if they look to qualify, not only with struggling Bangladesh having to win, but them too, if they want to have any chance of progressing. Uncomfortably so, their fate now does not lie solely in their hands.

India are the hot favorites right now. They obviously want to finish first to get the easier semi-final match, but have an opportunity to experiment and change things round for the next game having played the same team for their three only and winning games in the tournament.

Captain MS Dhoni didn’t have to do much, thanks in part to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s double centuries, in a cornerstone partnership of the innings. It seemed like India could bat on, staying a few runs under the amount of balls, and wait for the opening to smash it into the rafters.

Meanwhile, Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo brought out the true drama of cricket in an absolute nail-biter. What a comeback. What a day of cricket.

Group Stage Progression To All-Out Domination: Netherlands, Bangladesh Dominated In Super 10 Games

BY NISAR KHAN

Bangladesh and Netherlands progressed to the Super 10 and had their first games in the days prior. However, for both qualifying teams, their introduction was hostile and humiliating at the hands of Sri Lanka and West Indies respectively.

West Indies cruised to a win over tournament-hosts Bangladesh. THE GUARDIAN

West Indies picked up their first win of the tournament in devastating fashion, as they pummeled the hosts Bangldadesh in a 73 run victory.

Bangladesh, who qualified through the group stages on some promising performances, were unable to break the 100 mark, 2 runs shy of Bangladesh’s 171 runs that they were chasing.

Dwayne Smith was lighting it up on the boundaries, as he affirmed his place high on the notable numbers, hitting 72 runs of 43 balls, a stint that included 3 sixes and 10 fours – alleviating some pressure off Chris Gayle, who was far from his explosive self from the crease.

West Indies did not consistently lose wickets throughout the innings, it was more of a bizarre dwindle from West Indies that saw four batsmen add 0 runs to the total, keeping them at bay for 171 – 1, and leaving Bangladesh with some hope.

That hope would diminish mostly when Bangladesh conceded 3 wickets in the space of 6 balls – with the hosts’ top scorer Mushfiqur adding 22 runs to their 98-all-out innings, concluding with 5 balls to spare.

Even though they bizarrely conceded four wickets with 0 runs from the batsmen, West Indies comfortably won with Bangladesh’s slow run scoring making the win edge closer to inevitability, making Bangladesh’s first game in the Super 10 a torrid one.

On to the day prior, which saw the other Super 10 qualifier, Netherlands, get dismantled by a big side. Sri Lanka restricted Netherlands to a record low score as they bowled out the orange side for just 39 runs.

Ajantha Mendis and Angelo Mathews took three wickets each as only one Netherlands player, Tom Cooper, posted double digits with 16 runs.

It was a comfortable nine-wicket victory as the runs were accumulated and the game was won inside five overs.

Netherlands’ 39 runs was the lowest score ever in a Twenty20 International, 17 runs fewer than Kenya vs. Afghanistan back in August 2013.

The Super 10 introductions for Netherlands and Bangladesh are hostile ones, as they are beaten all ends up in their games.

Hosts Bangladesh Dispatch Nepal, Afghanistan Knock Hong Kong Out Of Twenty20 World Cup In Day 3

BY NISAR KHAN

With the third day of action commencing in the Twenty20 World Cup, the hosts Bangladesh got back-to-back wins, while it was the opposite for Hong Kong in Group A. Plus, England were in action against West Indies.

Bangladesh edged even closer to the World Cup main draw as the hosts comfortably dispatched Nepal for the second win in the group.

There was yet another vibrant crowd as masses of support flowed out for the Group A toppers, with an eight-wicket emphatic victory.

The game was wrapped up with 27 balls to spare, and Bangladesh won the game in some style as Shakib Al-Hassan slogged it over the boundary for a game-winning six.

After Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl, Nepal were restricted to a subdued score of 126, headlined by 41 runs from Paras Khadka and Sharad Vesawkar added 40 to the total.

An excellent bowling display by the hosts was topped by Al-Amin Hossain’s 17-2 figures and was key in blockading any further Nepal scoring in the final over.

However, Nepal’s hopes were hindered early with opening batsman Khakurel scoring 8 and Pun & Malla were out within three balls, scoring just 25 between them.

The game was won not only on first impressions but less than 10 overs in with a really strong opening bat. Haque was scoring boundaries at ease with Iqbal before he was out in the 11th over, and by that time Bangladesh had their foot in the doorstep of victory – and more importantly, in the progression to the Super 10 stage.

Hong Kong were eliminated from the qualifiers as Afghanistan outplayed them to win by seven wickets, and more importantly, kept their hopes of qualification alive.

An astonishing knock from Shafiullah with 51 runs from 24 balls meant that Afghanistan would beat Hong Kong’s 153 runs with two overs to spare.

Hong Kong put on a decent batting performance though, as they put on a decent total of 152, with the biggest contributor being Mark Chapman’s 38 runs as Hong Kong elected to bat.

Shapoor Zadran and Mohammad Nabi both got 27-2 with impressive bowling displays, a key part of halting Hong Kong’s momentum as they looked to conjure up an unbeatable total.

Hong Kong are out, but Afghanistan remain in and their fortunes could turn with a Bangladesh loss and them winning on Thursday.

West Indies continued their hot form going into the tournament, along with wiping away any doubt that came from their under-par loss to England as they overpowered the Three Lions with a remarkable display from Gayle.

The loss brought about more doubt and misery for England, who are still shaken up from a humiliating Ashes loss over Christmas.

West Indies left a generous 23 balls to spare but were much less generous in there wicket taking making for a comfortable 7-wicket victory.

As we near the Super 10 phase of the tournament, West Indies go in on a hot streak while Bangladesh are close to joining them. However, with Afghanistan’s win, Group A is all but over.

The West Indies have finished runners up twice before in this tournament, won it in 2004 and have the leading run scorer in the history in Chris Gayle. He has scored 695 runs in the past and is looking in fine form after an explosive IPL season with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. They also have big shots in Keiron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and Devon Smith who can all hit sixes for fun. They also have young starlet Jason Holder who is a young prodigy with promise and he should what he can do with the Chennai Super Kings in this years IPL. All this should add up to a good tournament? No. They are in the hardest and toughest group of the tournament with the world champions India, Mercurial Pakistan and a consistent South Africa side and for this reason I dont expect much from the Windies this year.
