FIFA Bite Back on Suarez With Four-Month Ban

FIFA have banned Luis Suarez for four-months from any footballing activity as a punishment for his alleged bite on Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.

BY NISAR KHAN

FIFA announced in a press conference on Thursday that the Urugayan will be suspended for nine official International matches along with a fine costing around £66,000.

For four months, he is banned from any footballing activity – be it stadium visiting and playing for club or country.

In addition, he will be unable to watch the remainder of the Urugayan World Cup campaign, the recipient of a stadium ban.

Due to the four-month ban, Luis Suarez’s first game back will be on the 1st November as Liverpool play Newcastle – if he remains in the Premier League.

The ban has now taken effect.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field.”, the spokeperson said.

The incident occurred on Monday in Group C, where Luis Suarez bit Italian defender Chilleini, and dived to the ground afterwards. Footage circulated around the web and straight after full time the controversy aroused.

Liverpool FC issued a brief statement, “LFC will wait until we have seen and have had time to review the disciplinary report before making any further comments”, as they and fans were dragged into a conundrum soon after the incident.

Later clarity was delivered and Liverpool are permitted to sell Luis Suarez. But, with that being said, an incident like this must dent his stock.

“LFC will wait until we have seen and have had time to review the disciplinary report before making any further comments.”

Analysis / Verdict

Luis Suarez’s absence from the Reds is a calamity – and that’s coming from a Liverpool fan. At the end of the day, it’s his fault – he did what he did and paid for it. But, his club ban is controversial in my eyes. Maybe justified, but what confuses is that he was not banned from Uruguay when he bit Ivanovic last year. With that being said, it was in FA discretion – this was not. Many have argued for a longer ban, but with this FIFA have made an example without coming out looking to villainous. The incident will contribute to Suarez’s negative image portrayed in English football.

David Villa Bows Out in Final Game For Spain

David Villa bowed out in his Spain international career with a goal against Australia in Curitiba.

BY NISAR KHAN

A final kiss of the badge.

Recently signing with MLS team, New York City FC, Villa announced just days before the World Cup that he would be hanging up his boots after the World Cup.

Helping Atletico to their historic La Liga title win, along with Barcelona a few seasons earlier, the prolific David Villa made an impact for both club and country.

He expressed his desire to continue, saying he would play till 50, but acknowledged the need to be realistic with an array of young talent entering the side.

Having lost to Netherlands and Chile, David Villa was part of a very shifted Spain side in their final game vs. Australia.

Villa scored the only goal of the first half, being found in space by Juanfran for an intricate backheel to beat the Aussie keeper Ryan.

The 32-year-old was a key piece for Spain’s era of dominance, and he “spoke with Del Bosque and he understands [my] decision”.

Villa was forced off near the hour mark, and broke down on the bench in tears as his career came to an end.

Steven Gerrard was addressing the press alongside England manager Roy Hodgson, as they prepared for their final World Cup game against Costa Rica.

After consecutive World Cup losses to Italy and Uruguay, speculation ran rampant about the possible departure of Steven Gerrard’s captain role.

But in Rio, Gerrard said he “certainly won’t be rushing into any decision”, and “asked the manager for some time over Summer” to consider.

“We tried our very best”, Hodgson explained, but couldn’t deny disappointment.

“I can see a lot of possibility for this team to improve”, he added. “There is work to be done but we’re on a good path”.

It could prove contradictory however, with urges to push the youth in the team that could see Gerrard and others having to make way.

Hodgson later defended his side, saying the “preparation could not have been any better”, and said the game could have went either way.

Both were adamant that there was plenty of quality in the side.

Gerrard said the fans deserve a win, and that it what he intends to do over Costa Rica.

“We’ve got it all to do”, Hodgson concluded.

Can England revamp even with Gerrard and Hodgson staying put?
