Randy Orton Leaves No Doubt in TLC Triumph to Take Both Titles in Houston

BY NISAR KHAN

WWE TLC 2013
Toyota Center, Houston, Texas.

HOUSTON – Randy Orton triumphed in an incredible TLC match to be crowned the Unified WWE Champion.

Before the pay-per-view, Fandango picked up a victory over Dolph Ziggler in the kick-off show. Fandango would win in the first encounter between the two following a timely distraction from Summer Rae.

There were two 3-on-1 handicap matches on the card, with CM Punk getting the better of The Shield while Daniel Bryan was on the receiving end of some misfortune from the Wyatt Family.

The World witnessed a historic and incredible TLC encounter between two of WWE’s top guys, as Randy Orton and John Cena battled to take it all.

CM Punk def. The Shield
3-on-1 Handicap Match

CM Punk beat the numbers game and overcame the odds as he defeated The Shield in the opening bout of the night.

The Straight-Edge Savior utilized an early game-plan that was proving to be successful, keeping Ambrose and Rollins away from the corner to inflict damage.

However, Roman Reigns would instate his power game as a factor, manhandling the longest reigning Champion in the modern era to gain the advantage.

Roman Reigns would suffer an injury when his attempted spear to CM Punk was sidestepped, and The Shield’s powerhouse went crashing over the announcers’ table, damaging his eye and sidelined for a few moments to receive medical attention.

With the numbers now depleted, CM Punk was working up against Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, before Dean Ambrose was removed from the equation as Rollins bumped into him.

CM Punk was on the brink of capitalizing on this one-on-one advantage, before the numbers game took its toll once again.

Be it luck, or wisdom, CM Punk would turn things in his favor, firstly attacking Seth Rollins, before sidestepping Roman Reigns spear that would result in the Samoan in fact spearing his own team member.

Tossing Roman Reigns outside the ring, CM Punk went on to pin Dean Ambrose before fleeing to watch The Shield members in anguish.

A terrific match as expected, with CM Punk wrestling well with all three members. Roman Reigns injury was on the brink of compromising the outcome of the match, but great professionalism from him to carry on. The finish was predictable because The Shield were on a decline in regards to co-operation as of late, but overall a good match. Infrastructure is now prepared for the demise and eventual collapse of The Shield.

AJ Lee def. Natalya
Diva’s Championship match: AJ Lee retains

Natalya was once again denied a run as Diva’s Champion after AJ Lee capitalized of a Tamina Snuka distraction to secure her coveted Gold.

Throughout the match, the Diva’s Champion was apparently in dire straits as the experienced Natalya controlled the majority of action.

There were glimpses of a comeback though, as Tamina Snuka – AJ Lee’s associate – allowed the Champion to regain an advantage.

Soon after, AJ found herself locked in a Sharpshooter in the center of the ring after countering a Black Widow submission. Following a break-away from the submission, a quick roll-up pin and grabbing of Natalya’s hair allowed the Diva’s Champion to retain.

Big E Langston def. Damien Sandow
Intercontinental Championship match: Big E Langston retains

Big E Langston saw off a valiant Damien Sandow effort to extend his Championship reign and put a “Big Ending” to Sandow’s Championship hopes.

Damien Sandow introduced a brutal and aggressive style, but they would not phase the Champion for a prolonged amount of time.

Eventually, when the power game got going, Damien Sandow would be atop Langston’s shoulders, followed by an emphatic big ending.

Solid match and another great performance by Big E Langston. Damien Sandow turned up and performed, but the predictable outcome was not compromised. How midcard matches should work, solid, have enough time and are moderately entertaining.

Cody Rhodes & Goldust def. Real Americans, Curtis Axel & Ryback, Rey Mysterio & Big Show
Four-Way Tag-Team match for WWE Tag Team Championships: Rhodes & Goldust Retain

Cody Rhodes and Goldust stepped up to the call once again in their victory in a Four-Way Tag Team match to successfully defend their tag-team titles.

Ryback and Curtis Axel were first to be eliminated, as Goldust pinned Ryback after the early onslaught from the human wrecking-ball.

The Real Americans would come into the match late but use their freshness as an advantage. An advantage of which would ultimately prove insignificant as The Big Show eliminated Antonio Cesaro with a knockout punch.

Then it was down to two teams, Rey Mysterio & Big Show battling with Cody Rhodes & Goldust.

Showing good sportmanship, Big Show allowed Goldust to get back to his feet before they engaged in battle.

Goldust showed the effects of the beatings he took throughout the match, extremely fatigued allowing The Big Show to dominate.

Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes would be pushed to the limit by Rey Mysterio, whose 619 attempt was blocked by Cody Rhodes attempting to reverse with an Alabama Slam. This would not be the case, but it would be followed up by a Disaster Kick to pick up the victory and retain.

Both teams expressed respect for one another with a passionate embrace and handshake in the ring following the match.

Very good contest, and yet again Cody Rhodes & Goldust put on another terrific performance. For me, it seemed like Ryback & Curtis Axel and The Real Americans were made to seem irrelevant, if that was so, then it should have been a normal tag match from the start. Anyway, very fast and good stuff throughout, superb performances all round.

R-Truth def. Brodus Clay

R-Truth took advantage of a distraction to defeat Brodus Clay in a heated singles match.

The match had came to a head due to recent run-ins between the teams over the recent weeks.

R-Truth was taking a lot of damage during the match, but Brodus Clay’s intentions seemed more to inflict pain upon R-Truth, rather than pick up the win.

Tensai, Brodus Clay’s partner, voiced his concerns by stepping up to the apron. Brodus Clay claimed he was better than him, proceeding by Tensai leaving. Then, Brodus Clay’s other associates, the Funkadactyls, also left.

As Brodus Clay looked on up the ramp irate, he would turn around to a kick from R-Truth before being pinned.

Disarray: Brodus Clay seething following his loss

Kofi Kingston def. The Miz
No-Disqualification Match

Jamaican Sensation Kofi Kingston was victorious in the latest installment to a brimming rivalry between himself and The Miz.

It all escalated in the WWE TLC Kick-Off show, when a brawl broke out between the two.

Kofi Kingston took long to get out of the blocks, and also nurtured a leg injury after he crashed hard to the outside.

The Miz was savage in his pursuit to cause further damage to Kofi Kingston, while stripping the turnbuckle of the protective pad.

It would however prove costly for The Miz, as he hit his head of the metal before turning into the Trouble in Paradise kick for Kofi Kingston to have his hand raised in victory.

Victory: Kofi Kingston post-match

The Wyatt Family def. Daniel Bryan
3-on-1 Handicap match

Daniel Bryan was deemed The Wyatt Family’s next victim after his huge flurry of offense was drastically halted.

Subject to an early beatdown, The Wyatt Family continued to put a beating on Daniel Bryan.

Bray Wyatt offered an ending to all the pain by extending out a hand of agreement, one of which was denied by Bryan.

Eventually, Bryan had the fans in Houston up on their feet when he was running around the ring and took out all three members.

Following a suicide dive through the ropes, Daniel Bryan’s YES! Lock on Bray Wyatt was reversed in to some nasty elbows, followed by a ‘Sister Abigail’ to finish the job.

Daniel Bryan performs again and entertains us all. Slightly weak finish as it seemed to come at an inopportune time, but Daniel Bryan’s flurries were great. This could easily be an end to the feud, or just another chapter.

Daniel Bryan was just not good enough to defeat the numbers game.

Randy Orton def. John Cena
Tables, Ladders and Chairs match for WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship: New WWE World Heavyweight Champion

Randy Orton triumphed over John Cena in an incredible TLC encounter to win both the World Heavyweight Championship and WWE Championship.

With an electric atmosphere in Houston, both Randy Orton and John Cena were ready to make history with a “big fight feel” at the Toyota Center.

It didn’t take long for the objects to be utilized, with John Cena going for a table after a few exchanges, while Orton’s early attempt to climb the ladder for the titles was quickly halted.

As the match progressed, the ladder ascensions became that more significant, as each man took longer to get back up.

John Cena was just seconds away from getting the Championships, when he hit Orton with a ladder sending him through a table. The Viper just got up in time to pull Cena back down and hit a riveting RKO that left both men down.

The CeNation Leader showed his brutality, busting Randy Orton open with consecutive shots with the steel steps.

Soon after, The Viper would respond, savagely beating John Cena down with a microphone and leaving the World Heavyweight Champion disorientated.

A vicious side of Randy Orton was soon emerging, as he looked to finish Cena with a punt, that he beat Big Show with at Survivor Series

John Cena moved out of the way in time, before delivering an emphatic Attitude Adjustment through the announcer’s table. Cena would then ascend to gripping both titles, but yet again Orton would rise to remove the ladder and leave Cena hanging, before hitting him with a chair to send him crashing down.

This would be followed by a series of huge chair shots, but soon lead to a stalemate as Cena tackled Orton through a table.

It looked like it was all over for John Cena after Randy Orton locked John Cena to the ropes with handcuffs.

John Cena managed to find a way through, undoing the turnbuckle to climb the ladder and knock Orton off, but as he looked to get the titles, Orton pulled him off to the table.

Randy Orton would ascend to pick up the titles, and he would be crowned the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

And with that, the definitive face of the WWE was decided. There was now only one Champion in the WWE, and that was Randy Orton.

After an incredible match between two of WWE’s best, one emerged as the best and that was Randy Orton.

Viper Strikes Fatally to Retain Gold as Sole Survivors Emerge in Boston

BY NISAR KHAN

WWE
SURVIVOR SERIES 2013

BOSTON – Randy Orton knocked off The Big Show to retain his WWE Championship in a night where the other World Champion, John Cena, made a big statement in his hometown for the new possible face of the WWE.

Sole-survivors emerged from the tag team matches with stand-out performances from Roman Reigns and Natalya.

Mark Henry made a return as he accepted Ryback’s open-challenge to set up for an impromptu rematch from this past WrestleMania.

The Miz def. Kofi Kingston

Kofi Kingston was left appalled as he conceded a pinfall victory to The Miz in the
Survivor Series kick-off show.

It all initially came out on the RAW prior to Survivor Series, as The Miz left Kofi Kingston hanging in a tag team match with the Wyatt Family.

Quick paced from the outset, the familiarity between the two was clear as a lot of the action resembled that off their numerous encounters in the past.

The Miz looked for an early victory with a quick roll-up, but soon after he would find himself on the backfoot dwelling against Kofi Kingstons unorthodox offence.

As the match concluded, Kofi Kingston hit The Miz with kicks to the face three times, but on his fourth attempt, he would miss leading up to an exchange where The Miz rolled up Kofi Kingston for the three-count to win.

Kofi Kingston showed his disgust at the lost, savagely slapping The Miz following the bout then exiting the ring.

The Shield & Real Americans def. The Usos, Cody Rhodes, Goldust & Rey Mysterio

Roman Reigns delivered one of the best individual Survivor Series performances to date with four emphatic spears to eliminate his opponents in the opening match of the main card.

Dean Ambrose was eliminated early in the match by Cody Rhodes. Ambrose was arguing with the referee when Cody Rhodes rolled him up to eliminate one third of The Shield. Chaos then broke out with The Usos flying high eliminating the factors outside momentarily.

Further woes were added when Jack Swagger was eliminated. Having controlled Rey Mysterio earlier, he was the recipient of a 619 followed by an Uso super-kick, before a Samoan Splash to eliminate one half of the Real Americans.

Antonio Cesaro demonstrated his brute strength with a Cesaro swing to both of the Usos. However, Cody Rhodes would score another elimination with a roll-up pin when Antonio Cesaro lost concentration, making it two-on-five.

Roman Reigns made two eliminations in quick succession with a spear to Jimmy Uso and taking out Cody Rhodes with some clever tag-teaming with Seth Rollins.

Seth Rollins evened the odds taking advantage of a distracted Jey Uso, who was pursuing Roman Reigns outside the ring, with a head stomp to make it two-on-two.

Rey Mysterio managed to eliminate Seth Rollins when the odds were looking against him. Just getting into the ring before the countout after Reigns tossed him out of it like a ragdoll, the Master of the 619 went on to counter an Electric Chair attempt from Seth Rollins for a quick pin.

Goldust momentum was quickly thwarted by Roman Reigns spear when he came off the ropes. When Rey Mysterio almost caught him off guard, but Roman Reigns hit him with a colossal spear to win the match.

Big E Langston def. Curtis Axel
Retains Intercontinental Championship

Big E Langston put a “Big Ending” to Curtis Axel as he retained his Championship in a rematch from this past week.

The Master of the Five Count bombarded Curtis Axel in the early stages of the match, using his power game to take a full threshold of the match.

However, Curtis Axel took advantage of the outside to take control momentarily, but it would not last as Langston took control once again.

Former Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel looked to dodge Big E Langston in order to take an advantage, but was shocked when Big E Langston managed to kick out of the Perfectplex.

Moments later, Curtis Axel would find himself on Big E’s shoulders followed by a Big Ending as the Intercontinental Championship was emphatically retained.

Total Divas Cast def. Team AJ Lee
7-on-7 Divas Elimination Tag Match

The Total Divas cast prevailed amid chaos in a 7-on-7 Divas’ tag-team match where Natalya got the decider after submitting Divas Champion AJ Lee.

After AJ Lee’s team began to fall fast, Kaitlyn restored order with eliminations of the Funkadactyls.

Natalya submitted Tamina Snuka before submitting AJ Lee to score the win for her team after other chaotic eliminations.

Mark Henry def. Ryback

Mark Henry returned from injury as he accepted Ryback’s open challenge to make an emphatic statement.

In a rematch from WrestleMania 29, both men looked to enforce their power games early on with strength being the obvious imperative factor of the match.

Ryback took it to Mark Henry straight from the bell, stomping him to the ground and keeping a few steps ahead of the World’s Strongest Man to control the match. But Mark Henry would soon get back into his flow, looking a lot faster than in recent memory.

Some huge feats of strength including a Spine-buster and Super-plex from Ryback were not enough to put Mark Henry away, and after one of the biggest Cross-Bodies ever, Mark Henry finished the Human Wrecking Ball with the World’s Strongest Slam.

John Cena def. Alberto Del Rio
Retains World Heavyweight Championship

John Cena embraced in home-coming triumph as he defeated Alberto Del Rio in his hometown to retain the World Heavyweight Championship emphatically.

Despite being in his hometown however, John Cena received mixed reactions upon his entrance to the arena.

Alberto Del Rio’s early game plan of targeting the arm was not successful as John Cena was too quick. Also exploiting the power game, John Cena made it tough for Alberto Del Rio.

It took a while for John Cena to make an error, but when he did, Alberto Del Rio capitalized to take control of the match, taking it to the outside of the ring too, further damaging the Champion.

Alberto Del Rio came close to tapping when John Cena had the STF locked in, but the ropes acted as a lifeline allowing the Mexican Aristocrat to escape.

Early attempts for a Cross-Arm Breaker were unsuccessful, but when Alberto Del Rio turned out from a cross-body to lock it in, John Cena was in dire straits.

Those dire straits however, didn’t last long. In an insane feat of strength, John Cena lifted Del Rio up to drop him on the canvas, soon after followed by an Attitude Adjustment to finish the match.

Defiant: Alberto Del Rio’s Cross-Arm Breakers did not succeed in beating John Cena.

CM Punk & Daniel Bryan def. Erick Rowan & Luke Harper

The Best & The Beard knocked off the Wyatt Family in a thrilling tag-team match as CM Punk and Daniel Bryan got revenge.

Just as they needed to do, Daniel Bryan and CM Punk assembled substantial and early offense against the Wyatt Family with combinations of YES! kicks, along with rope-to-rope action.

Soon into the match, the Wyatt Family would dictate the action, using their strength and size advantage to take control.

Luke Harper power-bombed Daniel Bryan from the top rope, while Erick Rowan tossed CM Punk to the outside when the action epitomized with “This is Awesome” chants from the Boston crowd.

CM Punk paid homage to the late “Macho Man” Randy Savage, delivering an elbow to the heart in the latter stages of the match.

Daniel Bryan knocked out Erick Rowan with a Flying Knee, followed by CM Punk finishing the match with a GTS to Luke Harper.

Bray Wyatt was on the brink of stepping in the ring after to brawl Punk and Bryan, but ended up not doing so, indicating that the feud is far from an end.

Randy Orton def. The Big Show
Retains WWE Championship

Randy Orton brought back the infamous punt to defeat The Big Show in the main event after the timely arrival of The Authority.

The WWE Champion took long to get into the thick of the action, fleeing The Big Show immediately following the bell.

The Big Show would soon get his hands on Randy Orton, punishing him with huge handslaps to the chest, with Randy Orton firing back from a DDT.

Referee Charles Robinson was knocked down following a collision, and during that time, Randy Orton was knocked out by The Big Show outside the ring.

When things got back into the ring, The Authority made an all-too timely appearance, distracting Big Show as Randy Orton set him up and gave him an RKO.

What followed would secure the Championship, as Randy Orton knocked out The Big Show with a punt to retain the Championship.

Randy Orton’s title celebrations were cut short however as John Cena came out in front of his home crowd to hold the belt, and possibly claim himself as the face of the WWE.

There are plenty of questions to follow, as chaos erupts in tag matches, Mark Henry returns and the altercation between the two World Champions.

Roman Reigns delivered the performance of the night with four emphatic eliminations in the 10-man tag team match.

Randy Orton is the WWE Champion, but someone who just made some noise was the World Heavyweight Champion, John Cena. Who really is the face of the WWE?

Sole survivors emerge from Boston, but what may be of more significance is a possible new face of the WWE.

WWE BATTLEGROUND 2013: Buffalo Power Shortage Doesn’t Stop WWE Championship Match, But The Big Show Does

By Nisar Khan

BUFFALO – The WWE Championship remains vacant, after chaotic end to WWE Battleground which saw The Big Show knock out both Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton.

Opening the night in the “Kick-Off” show, Dolph Ziggler knocked off Money in the Bank holder Damien Sandow following an enticing contest. The Intellectual Savior of the Masses seemed to pick up a knee injury, while speculation was abuzz about the possibility of him cashing in on the night.

Fans were packed in and ready to go for WWE Battleground, as it came LIVE from the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, NY.

Alberto Del Rio def. Rob Van Dam

In the first match of the pay-per-view, Alberto Del Rio defended his World Heavyweight Championship in a hardcore match against Rob Van Dam. In spite of Van Dam’s advantage being in his element, the Mexican Aristocrat would prevail.

High Risk: Van Dam went hardcore throughout the match (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

Alberto Del Rio viciously attacked Rob Van Dam straight from the bell, but after the Champion took to long retrieving weapons, the challenger gained an early advantage. Soon after, Rob Van Dam would utilize a chair, hitting Del Rio’s head followed by an impressive Slingshot DDT straight onto the chair. Complexion quickly changed yet again as Del Rio used the chair to his advantage. After some battle for control, Rob Van Dam would introduce a ladder to the match – then introducing it to Del Rio by throwing him straight into it and crashing to the outside. After a few more vicious throws, Van Dam’s leg would get trapped in it, allowing Del Rio to nail him with an enziguri. Hardcore Rules indeed… the next thing in the ring would be a garbage can – soon becoming a dented garbage can at the expense of Van Dam’s kick. And a real indication of trouble would be when Van Dam hit Del Rio with a Split-Leg Moonsault, the Champion only just managing to kick out. Van Dam was in full control. But Del Rio would capitalise on the right opportunity, setting up a chair and trapping Rob Van Dam’s arm inside it, before locking in the lethal Cross-Arm Breaker. And so, Del Rio’s title reign continues…

RESULT: Alberto Del Rio def. Rob Van Dam via Submission (Retains World Heavyweight Championship)

Alberto Del Rio beats Rob Van Dam at his own game. Van Dam’s hardcore approach to the match was not enough to stop Del Rio’s Cross-Arm Breaker.

The Real Americans def. The Great Khali & Santino Marella

Zeb Colter’s men were on a quest to give their “We The People” campaign a lasting impression in Buffalo, and they were successful in their attempt after Cesaro’s freak strength shocked the WWE Universe.

Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger did a great job of isolating Santino Marella and leaving The Great Khali out of action. But when things spilled over, The Great Khali was in and wrecking The Real Americans. It would take some crafty tag-teaming from The Real Americans to distract The Great Khali. Antonio Cesaro seized on the opportunity, grabbing both legs of Khali and swinging him around much to the shock of the WWE Universe.

Curtis Axel def. R-Truth

Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel managed to put R-Truth’s Championship hopes away as he put on a solid performance to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

R-Truth brought a lot of offence to the table but the Intercontinental Champion managed to keep him at bay. Soon, an advantage would open for Axel to seize on the advantage and he did effectively, finishing R-Truth to retain.

Curtis Axel remains Intercontinental Champion. Meanwhile, the woes continue for R-Truth in a not so perfect night for the challenger.

AJ Lee def. Brie Bella

Divas Champion AJ Lee would once again prevail over a Total Divas cast member as she defended her title against Brie Bella in one of the better Diva’s matches in recent memory.

AJ Lee took a lot of damage from Brie Bella, and when things were looking to epitomize, it would take a distraction from Tamina Snuka to give AJ Lee the advantage. Tamina attacked Nikki Bella, prompting Brie Bella’s distraction, allowing AJ Lee to get the quick pin.

The Championship reign of AJ Lee continues, but its the edge given from a Tamina Snuka distraction that proves the advantage.

Cody Rhodes & Goldust def. Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns

The Rhodes Family solidified their returns to WWE when they knocked off The Shield in an epic match to lighten up fans in Buffalo.

Determination: Cody Rhodes gave it his all (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

Emotions were running high, the Rhodes Family were united in battle to fight for their family. It was indeed a big fight feel in Buffalo. Momentum was in the favor of the Rhodes for the start of the match, but The Shield soon isolated Cody Rhodes. After The Shield had a lapse in control, Cody Rhodes was able to tag in his brother, Goldust, who came in with a huge frenzy leaving Romn Reigns dazed. But when Goldust missed big on a huge move, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins were able to take control. Then another let-up, seeing Cody Rhodes taking out Seth Rollins and delivering a vintage Alabama Slam. Cody Rhodes was distracted from The Shield on the outside, but the rest of the family would sort out tat problem, as Dusty Rhodes delivered a VINTAGE Bionic Elbow, before Goldust tok out Roman Reigns. Then, Seth Rollins could have stolen it, but Cody Rhodes was hell-bent on protecting his family and delivered the Cross-Rhodes to win. The Rhodes Family are back, and with that, the fans at the stadium embraced the feel-good moment as the roster came out to congratulate them.

RESULT: Cody Rhodes & Goldust def. Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins via Pinfall

Finally, someone stands up to The Shield. The Rhodes Family embrace and get their jobs back following an epic bout. With the return of the Bionic Elbow and Cross-Rhodes, they stand a family re-united, and a family back in the WWE.

Bray Wyatt def. Kofi Kingston

Kofi Kingston would become Bray Wyatt’s next victim at WWE Battleground, after The Eater of Worlds managed to see off Kofi Kingston’s unorthodox offence.

The Jamaican Sensation held his own during the match, but took a huge blow early in the match when Bray Wyatt came in like a train – tremendous impact. Kofi Kingston looked good during the match and Bray Wyatt seemed to sell it well. Then, he went flying over the top rope to take out the Wyatt Family, but the SOS would be fluently reversed to the Sister Abigail in a nice finish. What followed after saw Kofi get decimated by  Luke Harper and Erick Rowan.

RESULT: Bray Wyatt def. Kofi Kingston via Pinfall

CM Punk def. Ryback

Paul Heyman’s empire came to a standstill with CM Punk defeating Ryback per the mistakes from Paul Heyman himself.

CM Punk was able to keep Ryback at bay for the time being, but soon he found himself on the receiving end of a savage beating by the Human Wrecking Ball. However, CM Punk managed to luster together some offense before looking to finish with a GTS. But with Heyman ringside, the match wouldn’t finish just yet, as The Mad Scientist grabbed the microphone and distracted CM Punk referring to the Night of Champions match allowing Ryback to gain an advantage. But the referee turned his attention to Heyman, allowing CM Punk to beat Ryback with a low-blow and win. Paul Heyman and Ryback were left shocked in dismay.

RESULT: CM Punk def. Ryback via Pinfall

The Straight Edge Savior gets one-up over Paul Heyman with a win over Ryback. But his quest  to get his hands on Heyman continues.

Daniel Bryan/Randy Orton draw

Following power shortages in Buffalo that interrupted the WWE Battleground broadcast for a few minutes, the WWE Championship match would finally get underway.

The WWE Championship may not have been hindered by the power shortages, but it was by The Big Show.

The match went back and forth with the WWE Universe in Buffalo right behind Daniel Bryan. Randy Orton took many shots, but also damaged Bryan looking to pulverize him. Danile Bryan needed to pull out his best to win, and he did, going from the top rope with a diving headbutt before unleashing a huge frenzy that head the WWE Universe in Buffalo abuzz. When the YES! Lock was locked in, out came The Big Show who pulled out the referee and knocked out Bryan. Just as it looked like Orton was to win, The Big Show knocked out referee Scot Armstrong – who coincidentally returned, then knocked out Randy Orton before getting pumped up in front of the WWE Universe.

The WWE Championship remains vacated. The Big Show has finally stepped up against the Corporation.

In a night where Alberto Del Rio retained his World Heavyweight Championship, and The Rhodes marked their returns to WWE, it was a night to remember at WWE Battleground.

But it was The Big Show who stole the headlines at WWE Battleground, as he stands up against the Corporation. One must think that consequences lie ahead without a doubt, what price will Big Show pay for his shocking actions?

WWE BATTLEGROUND 2013: Complete Preview, Predictions, Opinion and more

By Nisar Khan

This Sunday, the newest pay-per-view on the WWE calendar makes its profound debut in Buffalo, New York – it’s WWE Battleground.

In the first of two WWE pay-per-views in October, optimism is high for Battleground wit a heated rivalry in the offing, hardcore match, decider for the most coveted title, and much more.

We preview, breakdown and predict all the matches on the card, with information about the event along with media and much more content to get you ready for the PPV.

Will Daniel Bryan win his battle against the corporation? (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

Dolph Ziggler vs. Damien Sandow (WWE Battleground Kick-Off show)

WWE Battleground will kick-off with a first-time match between a current and previous Money in the Bank winner. Its a collision of prospects when Damien Sandow battles Dolph Ziggler in the squared circle for the first time ever.

A rivalry has not been in the offing towards this match, but since this is a first time contest between the two, there is some to speculate.

There’s a terrific contrast in styles here. Dolph Ziggler has the more athletic approach, whereas Damien Sandow is a brutal combatant with a more celebral-style. In spite of their differences, there is one similarity – they can wrestle.

They have won the Money in the Bank – maybe in a doubtful way, but nonetheless, they have won it. They are two prospects for WWE’s near future to break out from the midcard. But who needs the win more here?

Damien Sandow currently holds the briefcase, allowing him to have a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. This alone acts as a catalyst to a sprinboard if he is ever flopping in the WWE ladder. Dolph Ziggler needs the win to get him back on course, a win over the Money in the Bank briefcase holder would achieve that.

Quite a tempting kick-off show, not only because it is a first-time but because it should be a good match. Dolph Ziggler is most probably going to win, because losing to Sandow would just not really work. Damien Sandow has the briefcase anyway.

Prediction: Dolph Ziggler def. Damien Sandow

AJ Lee vs. Brie Bella (Divas’ Championship)

Divas Champion AJ Lee may have saved her title at Night of Champions, but this Sunday her insults to Total Divas could come back to haunt her when she faces former Champion Brie Bella.

AJ may have retained her title in the Fatal-Four Way, but the Divas Champion will be the sole focus’ of Brie Bella when the two do battle in the squared circle. Both have garnered their fair share of momentum building up to the match and this could play a factor. Brie Bella looked strong when she defeated Alicia Fox, could this be a sign of things to come for the Divas Champion?

Brie Bella vs. AJ Lee is a preferred match-up from many wrestling fans. It may get the showcase it deserves, but I see this as just a passing by reign strengthener for AJ. She will most likely retain.

Prediction: AJ Lee def. Brie Bella (Retains Divas Championship)

Will AJ Lee finally be on the receiving end of revenge? Or will Brie Bella be next to fall victim to AJ?

Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth (Intercontinental Championship)

R-Truth looks to put his career right back on track when he challenges Curtis Axel for the Intercontinental Championship. But he has his work cut out when he steps inside the ring with Curtis Axel.

Curtis Axel and R-Truth have met several times inside the ring during Axel’s reign as Champion. They have all ended with Axel winning, an outcome that lasted until the final Raw before Battleground. Following a distraction from CM Punk, R-Truth was to pin Axel for the win, securing a shot at the title. Will the Straight Edge Savior play a factor this time round?

Paul Heyman’s World could very well be tumbling down come Battleground, and it could start with the demise of Curtis Axel. Punk’s distraction aside, Axel is more than capable of beating R-Truth, but a flare seems to have been lit for R-Truth, which could catapult him into possession of the prestigious Intercontinental title.

Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth… we have seen it many times before. But now the fact that it is on pay-per-view may have two reasons. The first is that its just to book Axel on the PPV, or the second for Axel to in fact lose the title following CM Punk screwing him. Of course the latter is a more unlikely outcome, but one still firmly in the fray of possibilities.

Prediction: Curtis Axel retains

Will Curtis Axel’s reign be ended by the Truth? Or will Heyman’s dynasty continue to build at Battleground?

Cody Rhodes & Goldust vs. Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins

Although the titles are not on the line, there is a lot at stake for the Rhodes family when they do battle with The Shield at Battleground. If pressure was ever high, the situation would be this for the Rhodes family, who defend their father’s job and Cody Rhodes looks to earn his employment back with the WWE.

This logically all dates back to the McMahon family and Rhodes feud, with the ongoing conflict between the two. This would escalate once again a few weeks ago, when Triple H put Cody Rhodes’ career on the line, and Rhodes lost to Orton.

In a quest to re-gain the job for his brother, Goldust stepped in, but his dreams were shattered with an RKO following a superb encounter.

Cody Rhodes couldn’t save his job, nor could his brother – the Viper had firmly kept them at bay, but only just. Following their failure, Stephanie McMahon invited their father, WWE Hall of Famer, Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes was presented with an ultimatum of which was rejected, and ended up being knocked out by The Big Show – per McMahon’s order.

https://i0.wp.com/gyazo.com/3cb8f0be65ddd4382952f8e0d4f844a4.gif

This would trigger an ambush from the Rhodes family who attacked The Shield the following week. Goldust and Cody Rhodes were then ejected by security, before being invited to the show the week after. They would offer up the proposition that would lead to this match being announced. But high stakes were indeed on the cards, as the Rhodes family would be fighting to protect their father’s job.
The Hounds of Justice attacked the Rhodes’ family, and they will seek retribution come Sunday.

But with a lot at stake, the task is hard.

Legitimately excited for this match. It has been a good feud to watch, I think Big Show may go overboard at Battleground, but I see the Rhodes winning. A clear sign to me is the fact that the titles were not on the line. Excited to watch.

Prediction: Cody Rhodes & Goldust def. Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns

Will Dusty Rhodes’ sons be able to save his job? Or will they become victim to the Hounds of Justice?

CM Punk vs. Ryback

The Second City Savior has had a longing quest to get revenge on Paul Heyman. Just as he thought the wait was finally over, he was hindered by the physical beast, Ryback. At WWE Battleground, CM Punk awaits his next challenge, and its a big one, as he goes toe-to-toe with the Human-Wrecking Ball.

The two have squared off previously, around a year ago at WWE Hell in a Cell, CM Punk would retain his WWE Championship – albeit by some one-sided refereeing – and with the help of The Shield, Punk would manage to keep Ryback at bay. This time round, there is an indefinite switch in motives. Neither looks the coward, both want to unleash pain on one another.

Putting last year’s rivalry aside, Ryback and CM Punk refreshed their feud at Night of Champions. The catalyst to this situation? Look no further than Paul Heyman. The ‘Mad Scientist’ summoned Ryback to save him when CM Punk was poised to unleash a beating at WWE’s previous pay-per-view.

Ryback faced CM Punk at Hell in a Cell last year (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

Returning to his home state in Chicago, CM Punk would finally speak out about the events that unfolded at Night of Champions. Once again however, Paul Heyman would get involved. Catering an injury (although apparent this was not the case after) Paul Heyman took to the stage in a wheel-chair. After his win over CM Punk, Heyman became the self-professed Best in the World, and provoked CM Punk to come and attack him. Out of nowhere, Curtis Axel and Ryback savagely attacked CM Punk. In spite of Punk’s strong efforts of resistance, he would eventually fall victim to Paul Heyman and his clients.

The fuel to the fire is retribution. CM Punk seeks retribution. He has been seeking it ever since he was crossed by Paul Heyman. Standing in his way however is one of his biggest challenges to date – Ryback. We’ve seen that CM Punk may not bode well against physical monsters as he lost to Lesnar, but CM Punk looks more fired up than ever.

CM Punk vs. Ryback? I am going to be straight up – it does not sound like an exciting match. We’ve seen this match before. Yes, I know, there is a change in characters, CM Punk is no longer a coward, but I am just not really excited for this match. It goes two ways in my opinion, CM Punk slays Ryback, or the Human Wrecking Ball gets a cheap win leading up to a match at Hell in a Cell – the latter of which is more predictable. For me, WWE ruined Ryback’s status as a danger during his poor spell over the previous months. Maybe CM Punk will carry him and put on a good match. The match may be pretty good, but it is the storyline around it that is becoming tedious.

Prediction: Ryback def. CM Punk (Interference/Distraction from Paul Heyman/Curtis Axel leads to Punk’s loss, match set-up for WWE Hell in a Cell)

CM Punk’s next challenge awaits at WWE Battleground. Wil The Straight-Edge Savior manage to throw off Heyman’s latest challenge? Or will Punk fall victim once again to Heyman’s empire?

Battleground Hardcore Rules Match: Alberto Del Rio vs. Rob Van Dam (World Heavyweight Championship)

It will be Hardcore Rules as the World Heavyweight Championship is under contention at Battleground between Alberto Del Rio and Rob Van Dam – continuing a feud of which boiled over at Night of Champions.

Ricardo Rodriguez set up for this rivalry weeks after SummerSlam, and it lead to a match for the title at Night of Champions. When Rob Van Dam looked to be closing in on the gold, the Mexican Aristocrat managed to slither his way to retaining the title as he delivered a low-blow to get disqualified. But this time, there are hardcore rules. Alberto Del Rio will have to pin or submit Rob Van Dam to retain his World Heavyweight Championship.

The Essence of Excellence steps in the ring with Rob Van Dam. Van Dam is a veteran of extreme wrestling, back in the days of ECW, RVD made a name for himself. This time round, the Champion is in the Challenger’s element, giving a huge advantage to Rob Van Dam.

If Rob Van Dam can get the control like he did at Night of Champions, Alberto Del Rio simply has no way out. The title could be changing hands this Sunday.

Hardcore Rules match, booked – that’s a good stipulation. Hopefully they use the weapons properly and make an entertaining bout. But with all the elements in Van Dam’s favor, it just gives me the impression that Van Dam won’t win this Sunday. Ricardo Rodriguez may cross him. If Van Dam does win however, we will see more matches, and I doubt that we will see more than one match after this bout. Why must World Heavyweight Championship feuds last so long?

Prediction: Alberto Del Rio def. Rob Van Dam (Ricardo Rodriguez screws Van Dam)

Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton (WWE Championship)

The ongoing saga between WWE’s Apex Predator and American Dragon is on course to crown a new WWE Champion. Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan do battle once again at WWE Battleground in contention for the vacated WWE Championship.

This bout will be the duo’s third for the WWE Championship, although they have had a few more encounters previously that were seemingly indecisive. It’s a case of very short title reigns – Daniel Bryan held the title for mere minutes before Randy Orton cashed in, then Randy Orton’s reign was ended at Night of Champions, only for Daniel Bryan to be stripped of the title the night after. Whether it be debatable refereeing, corporate handicaps or whatever it may be, this has been one wild run for the most coveted prize in sports entertainment.

Over the past few weeks, the WWE Universe has witnessed The Viper’s development into a sadistic man whose sights lie solely on the WWE Championship. The Apex Predator has cruelly attacked and victimized The Miz time and time again – sending a message to his opponent come Battleground. We are witnessing the re-incarnation of a man who will do anything to decimate his opponent.

Daniel Bryan’s task just got bigger. With Randy Orton now looking more dangerous than ever, Bryan has to see of a corporation that is hell-bent in his demise. But a thought prominent in the back of one’s mind is the involvement from the corporation. With a match of such big implications, how can they sit back without involvement, knowing that Daniel Bryan can beat Randy Orton. Will they have a factor in the outcome of the bout? It could be that Stephanie McMahon summons The Big Show yet again to do her dirty work, but that would be pushing the World’s Largest Athlete to the limit.

Daniel Bryan sustained a huge beating in the final Raw before Battleground, as the Viper unleashed his sadistic self. Does Daniel Bryan know the threat that he could be walking into?

https://i0.wp.com/gyazo.com/7367850a3f4b9d1e89288da49f63b863.gif

I doubt that this is the last match for the WWE Championship between Bryan and Orton. I’m very doubtful of a clean finish. Maybe chaos will break out or something. I expect another great match but I see only two plausible/likely endings – Big Show knocks out Daniel Bryan, or The Shield interfere, then the roster fights them and chaos breaks out, no contest or Orton win.

Prediction: Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton ends in Draw (The Shield interfere, then roster gets involved)

Who will be the new WWE Champion at Battleground? Who will emerge with the Gold when Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton lock horns on Sunday?

Will this moment of glory be repeated at WWE Battleground? (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

WWE Battleground comes LIVE from the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, NY. Its a card with potential to make a debut that could be remembered, but with Hell in a Cell just weeks after, this pay-per-view may be a mere stepping stone.

But what’s a WWE event without optimisim? Exactly – WWE Battleground can be a very exciting night, we will just have to wait and see who triumphs at the Battleground.

Who will prevail as the WWE Championship trilogy between Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton comes to an end? What will be the outcome of the Hardcore Rules match? Will CM Punk’s quest for revenge suffer another hindrance? Could it be the last time we see the Rhodes in WWE? Who will prevail from the Battleground this Sunday in New York?

WWE BATTLEGROUND: Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes Rumored to Wrestle on Next PPV

By Cena Harpin

It has been report that WWE Hall Of Famer and “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes could work a match at the next WWE PPV, Batteground.

Stephanie McMahon offers Dusty Rhodes a “business proposal”.  (Photo via WWE.com)

Rhodes hasn’t worked a WWE match in ages now and he isn’t getting any younger. With Dusty being 68 years old, would this match be a mistake and cause a possible injury?

For example, WWE Hall Of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler worked a few matches in 2012 and had a short feud with CM Punk. Lawler recently said in an interview, “Ziggler was partially to blame for my heart attack”.

Lawler is just a bit younger than Rhodes. If Dusty got in the ring again, the question is, who would he face? There are different roads to go down. The first match that came into my mind was Dusty, Goldust and Cody Rhodes vs The Shield. Although the Rhodes family may not win, it would give Cody a huge push and that’s what he deserves.

Expect Dusty to come back (after he got knocked out) and get attacked by The Shield only for Cody Rhodes to save him. I’m not sure how the WWE would put Goldust back into this but it would be very interesting.

Could Dusty Rhodes be in the ring in three weeks? Is the American Dream set to return back to the ropes? We’ll find out in due course…

WWE NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS 2013: Complete Preview, Predictions, Media and more

By Nisar Khan

It’s the one night in the WWE where it is all about the Champions. Complexion is just poised to change when WWE Night of Champions comes LIVE from Detroit this Sunday.

In this article, we preview each match, breaking them down with predictions.

Randy Orton will defend his WWE Championship against Daniel Bryan in the main event (via WWE.com)

TAG TEAM TURMOIL #1 CONTENDER’S MATCH (NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS KICK-OFF SHOW)

Indeed it will be a chaotic start to Night of Champions when The Prime Time Players, Tons of Funk, The Usos, Real Americnas and 3MB step into the squared circle to battle over #1 Contendership for the tag-team Gold.

Numerous tag-teams have garnered momentum as of late, and the booking of this bout seems a perfect solution for any team to catapult to the top. There is some excellent quality combined within the five tag teams, and it should prove for an exciting night.

Speaking of kick-off shows, read about a possible new initiative for Pre-Show broadcasting here >>

Going in with the biggest roll are The Prime Time Players. They have been on a great run over the past month, and their expectations could be fully exceeded if they find themselves the #1 contenders by the end of the night. Then, you have the charismatic albeit talented Usos, as they look to embark towards their wrestling lineage with another shot at the tag-team Gold. Maybe The Real Americans will secure their tag team back on track, as Jack Swagger and Antonio Cesaro look to enforce their power game in the bout. But if your talking about the mass of humanity that has a threshold on the contest, look no further than Tons of Funk, Sweet T and Brodus Clay will look to bid for the Gold. And then there’s the wildcard – so to speak – 3MB. Maybe the 3MB will get Detroit rocking with a shot at the tag team gold – but on further thought, the likelihood of this is little to nothing.

The Prime Time Players and Real Americans squared off last month (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

What an exciting kick-off show! This is going to be great and I wonder how the ‘Turmoil’ will unfold. Some superb wrestling quality with the likes of Jack Swagger, Antonio Cesaro, The Prime Time Players and The Usos. Although the match will be a fun one to watch, it is almost imminent of the winners…

PREDICTION: The Prime Time Players will emphatically win the match, pinning a 3MB member to secure #1 Contendership.

Will The Real Americans take a patriotic stand to the Championships? Can the 3MB get rolling with a chaotic win? Are The Usos destined for another shot at the Gold? Will it be a Funky-domination by Tons of Funk? Or will The Prime Time Players keep on rolling? Catch the WWE Night of Champions Kick-Off show streaming LIVE on TheSportMatrix.com at 12:30am (UK) or 7:30/4:30pm ET/PT (US)!

AJ LEE VS. BRIE BELLA VS. NAOMI VS. NATALYA (FATAL-4-WAY DIVAS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH)

Divas’ Champion AJ Lee faces her toughest challenge to date in a match where her words could come back to bite her as she defends her title in a Fatal-4-Way match.

AJ Lee would drop a ‘pipebomb’ so to speak when she bashed the Total Divas’ cast and really garnered heat from the Divas. AJ Lee targeted the reality stars and now it has her up against the odds where she only has a 25% chance of retaining… on paper.

The Divas Champion had her own back-up of Divas, Alicia Fox, Aksana and Layla to take out the Total Divas’ cast. But when she steps inside the ring, it is becoming a handicap situation. Naomi, Brie Bella and Natalya will want to make AJ Lee pay for her words.

With regards to the quality of the match itself, everyone has decent wrestling ability. Naomi gets the shot that everyone wants her to get, the Veteran Natalya has a partial shot at the Gold, and the Brie Bella looks to become Champion too, and that’s where things could collide.

I think more people will tune into this match because it has more buzz surrounding it. The element of a Fatal-4-Way makes things more interesting instantly. Could be one of the best Divas’ matches in quite a while.

PREDICTION: AJ Lee retains after Brie Bella, Natalya and Naomi battle about who should pin AJ Lee, allowing her to capitalize and retain.

Will AJ Lee manage to forward her PipeBombShell? (via DailyKnockoutBlog)

The odds are stacked up against the Divas’ Champion here. Will the Veteran Natalya get her hands back on the Gold? Will Naomi get her first taste of being a Champion? Will Brie Bella be the one leaving as Champion? Or will AJ Lee’s quest for Real Divas take out the Total Divas cast? We find out in the Fatal-Four-Way match at Night of Champions!

DEAN AMBROSE VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER (UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH)

Dolph Ziggler and Dean Ambrose are poised to put on a classic come Sunday, when they battle for the United States Championship.

This all came about and developed from The Shield’s partnership with Randy Orton and Triple H. The Show-Off was decimated by The Shield in a handicap match and was victim to attacks over recent weeks. The point of further escalation was reached when Dolph Ziggler was attacked by Dean Ambrose prior to his match with Ryback. The United States Champion savagely beat down the former World Heavyweight Champion leaving him to be victimised by Ryback.

Dolph Ziggler has waited for the opportunity to show Triple H that he is a good talent. But the Show-Off has came short each time, will this happen again?

Just 24 hours before Night of Champions, Dolph Ziggler earned the opportunity after defeating Dean Ambrose… although not in the way he intended to. The Shield’s interference gave him the win via Disqualification.

This is really going to be one terrific contest. Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler are two top quality talents, and every wrestling fan is going to enjoy it. Technicality meets athleticism, really looking forward to this match.

PREDICTION: Dean Ambrose def. Dolph Ziggler following a distraction

The United States Championship hangs in the balance come Sunday, but will Dean Ambrose reign continue? Or will The Show-Off recapture the Gold in Detroit?

CM PUNK VS. CURTIS AXEL & PAUL HEYMAN (HANDICAP ELIMINATION MATCH)

CM Punk vows to get his hands on Paul Heyman come Night of Champions. But standing in his way is the Intercontinental Champion, Curtis Axel. If Punk defeats Axel, it’s all over for Heyman.

Things have drastically got personal between CM Punk and Paul Heyman. After a shocking betrayal at Money in the Bank, the Straight-Edge Savior has been hell-bent on revenge. Keeping him at bay however was Brock Lesnar – who defeated him at SummerSlam – and Curtis Axel.

The Best in the World defeated Curtis Axel previously on RAW, which should have guaranteed him a match with Heyman. But the tables quickly turned and Punk found himself in a vicious attack at the hands of Heyman and Axel. Revenge just heats up…

It is looking pretty much imminent that Punk will beat Axel… setting him up to face Heyman. On SmackDown, the ‘Mad Scientist’ seemed certain that it will be the end of him when he faces CM Punk – so does this mean Heyman has lost faith in his own guy?

Right, first things first – Night of Champions is supposed to be the night where all titles are on the line but this year is not the case. And that’s all for a good reason that you may not complain about. I don’t think that Punk will get his hands on Heyman this Sunday… it’s all to early. Curtis Axel will lose, but Heyman will pull something out of his pocket, a new Heyman guy. Punk won’t know what hit him. That’s why this adds the excitement factor for this match.

PREDICTION: CM Punk eliminates Curtis Axel, then Paul Heyman unveils a new client to take out Punk, allowing Heyman to win.

Is CM Punk set to finally get his hands on Paul Heyman? Or will Punk once again face another roadblock on his quest for revenge? The Intercontinental Championship may not be at stake, but Paul Heyman’s welfare is.

ALBERTO DEL RIO VS. ROB VAN DAM (WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH)

Rob Van Dam is just a Five-Star Frogsplash away from being crowned the new World Heavyweight Champion. But he’ll have to defeat the Mexican Aristocrat Alberto Del Rio to get his hands on the Gold.

World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio has faced Rob Van Dam in the past months leading to this match, but these have seemed short and insignificant. The real impact was made with Ricardo Rodriguez as the catalyst.

After a vicious attack at the hands of Alberto Del Rio, Ricardo Rodriguez decided to reside with Rob Van Dam, allowing The Whole DAM Show to take a threshold towards #1 contendership for the title. Just forty-eight hours before the match, Alberto Del Rio would defeat Ricardo Rodriguez on SmackDown, but a post-match attack would be thwarted by Van Dam who came to the aid of his associate.

Van Dam got the last laugh going into this match, nailing Del Rio with a Five-Star Frogsplash… that is all it will take for him to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

The build up to this match has been generic. Repetitive at times and I’m not sure of what to think of the match itself. It depends on what you’re willing to see, really. As much as I would love to have Van Dam as Champion, I think Del Rio’s reign will continue. I was pondering on whether or not a cash-in by Sandow would occur, but I think it will happen later along the line.

PREDICTION: Alberto Del Rio retains the World Heavyweight Championship pinning Rob Van Dam.

Will Del Rio retain his title? (via WWE.com)

Is Alberto Del Rio’s World Heavyweight Championship reign poised to continue? Or will Rob Van Dam capture the Gold with a Five-Star Frogsplash?

RANDY ORTON VS. DANIEL BRYAN (WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH)

Daniel Bryan may not be able to beat the Corporation, but this Sunday, he goes one-on-one with Randy Orton in a quest to recapture the Gold that was so cruelly taken away from him.

After a triumphant win over John Cena at SummerSlam, Triple H would Pedigree Daniel Bryan allowing Randy Orton to cash-in and become the WWE Champion. The Flying Dragon was victim to numerous attacks in the following weeks, but also got some of his own revenge, making Randy Orton’s escalade into a YES!calade, and getting the last laugh.

Bryan heads in with the momentum, knocking Randy Orton out with a knee on RAW, and making the WWE Champion tap out on SmackDown. But come Sunday, there won’t be brawls, it will be a match. Not a match where Bryan is down, a match where it’s simply one-on-one to determine the WWE Champion.

But you can’t help but expect some involvement from the Corporation. They must be sticking around somewhere. Randy Orton must have a plan that involves something outside the ring come Sunday.

Daniel Bryan remains the underdog, but it is in that situation of which he thrives.

Bryan in the main-event of the pay-per-view is what fans want to see. The match itself will be far from a show-stopper, but the situation proves to make a great buzz. Daniel Bryan getting the upperhand consecutively on RAW and SmackDown is almost a sure-sign of Randy Orton retaining. Bryan will get screwed somehow.

PREDICTION: Randy Orton retains his WWE Championship after defeating Daniel Bryan with involvement from the Corporation.

Will Daniel Bryan recapture the Gold that means so much to him? Or will The Viper strike again to retain his title?

PREDICTIONS SUMMARY

  • Prime Time Players win Tag Team Turmoil
  • Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins def. The Shield (Retain Tag Team titles)
  • AJ Lee def. Naomi, Natalya and Brie Bella (Retains Divas’ Championship)
  • Dean Ambrose def. Dolph Ziggler (Retains US Championship)
  • Paul Heyman & Curtis Axel def. CM Punk (Axel eliminated, Heyman brings in new client)
  • Alberto Del Rio def. Rob Van Dam (Retains World Heavyweight Championship)
  • Randy Orton def. Daniel Bryan (Retains WWE Championship)

No title changes when the complexion can change, well. Maybe some shocking twists will more than compensate, how about a cash-in. Night of Champions is not one of the most hyped cards this year, but it could be…

It’s all about the Champions. Who will leave Detroit with the Gold this Sunday?

WWE: How Pre-Shows Should be Adapted to Increase PPV Buys

By Nisar Khan

WWE has used the pre-show frequently for over a year to promote pay-per-view buys. But is this the time for a change in strategy for WWE to do even better?

The Shield vs. The Usos was one of the best pre-show matches in recent memory.

Currently, pre-shows are aired live on the web, including sites like YouTube, Yahoo! and Facebook. Although these are the sites of which are most likely to reach viewers, having it on the web garners plenty of views – but not enough.

The quality of pre-shows has definitely improved following WrestleMania 29, but it is a shame that such good matches are not getting the publicity that they deserve. It’s a frequent complaining point from wrestling fans who feel that superstars are degraded when going on a pre-show. So, how could this matter be resolved?

Time is the problem here. There simply is not enough time on the card to fit all matches in, but broadcasting it differently could be the solution.

The Box Offices of which you can purchase events show 5 minute ‘previews’ running throughout the days going up to the event. It would be excellent utilization to show the pre-shows free on box office one hour before the event, many more people would watch, and the pre-show would serve it’s purpose much better.

The Pre-Shows now include expert panelists. (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

Pre-shows are aired to encourage people to buy the pay-per-view, so why not put it free on box office so people would be even more likely to buy it?

Comparison: WrestleMania 28 Pre-Show and SummerSlam Pre-Show

In the United Kingdom, Sky Box Office show the first 10 minutes of each WWE PPV free, just like other box office events. This is done to show people a small snippet of what they will get if they purchase the event. If the pre-show was free on the box office channel before it, it would get the publicity, and promote the buy.

There is obviously a reason as to why it is streamed on the web, mostly to increase the social media status. But when it comes down to it, PPV buys are more important that social media followers. Then there is also the situation about the YouTube partnership, business or buys, they should see how it works out.

The UFC do a similar sort of thing. The weigh-ins are available to watch online, and they are on FUEL TV in the USA. This should be a similar strategy for the WWE.

Dean Ambrose defended his US title against Rob Van Dam in a cracking contest at the SummerSlam pre-show. (Image Courtesy: WWE.com)

Yes, this is more of a business strategy for the company, and that’s what it is all about. Not only will the pre-show showing on Box Office persuade more people to buy, more people will watch the pre-show as it is more accessible, plus the pre-show matches will get the publicity they deserve.

And to add to the above points, the pre-show could act as an extension to the pay-per-view, allowing WWE to book much more effectively.

WWE should broadcast the pre-shows on the box office services before the event, allowing more people to access it and value the matches more. Of course it can still stream online to further the audience. This solution has advantages for WWE as it can be a platform to extend the pay-per view, and more people are persuaded to buy. There may be logistical situations to it, but it’s a win-win for WWE and they should give it a try.

Could this suggested strategy bring more money into Vince’s pocket? (via CraveOnline)

A change in strategy for WWE pre-shows could indeed be the solution for more PPV buys. Could this be the next move for WWE to increase their success?

WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW: The Reign of Terror Continues, Cody Rhodes, Daniel Bryan Fall Victims

Episode 1058 – Monday 2 September, 2013
Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines, IA.

By TheSportMatrix.com

DES MOINES – The ‘Reign of Terror’ continued on RAW on Monday, as Cody Rhodes was fired after losing to the WWE Champion Randy Orton, along with the Big Show selling out.

The Corporation took things to a whole new level on Monday Night. (via WWE.com)

TRIPLE H AND RANDY ORTON KICK-OFF THE SHOW:

The show started off with Triple H in the ring, and once again the Shield of Justice – Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns were on hand at ringside serving as security.

HHH introduced the WWE Champion Randy Orton out to the ring, where both had some stern words for the former Champion Bryan, garnering much heat from the Des Moines crowd. As The Cerebral Assassin babbled on, he claimed that Daniel Bryan was the modern Doink The Clown of the WWE among claiming that “Daniel Bryan will never be WWE Champion” Shortly after, D Bryan’s music played, and out he came. Bryan began cracking insults back at the two in the ring, saying “the only clowns he sees, are the ones in the ring” and calling them “sellouts”.

“Should I give up my WWE Championship Match at Randy Orton at Night of Champions?”
…”NO! NO! NO!” – Daniel Bryan

Triple H answered back, telling Bryan that he should not be angry with him and Orton, but instead with a 7ft, 500lb beast – The Big Show, who, apparently, still has an iron clad contract yet did not help Bryan during his beatdowns by the Shield and Orton in the recent weeks. With pretty much everyone knowing where The Game was leading to, he announced that Daniel Bryan would be facing The Big Show on RAW in the Main Event.

REVIEW:

A lazy way to start the show, as it was nearly Déjà vu for the WWE Universe as it was Triple H kicking off the show again insulting Bryan and putting him in a match, blah… blah… blah…

At least The Game made up for it after, dropping a bombshell backstage:

FANDANGO VS. THE MIZ:

Fandango vs. The Miz, the feud that not many care about, was the next match on the card. It was a pretty standard match with it going back and forth but there was nothing close to spectacular or anything to really gauge the interest of the WWE Universe. The Miz locked in the figure-four leglock, after about 4 seconds Fandango tapped, and that was that.

WINNER: The Miz

Where does The Miz go from here? (via WWE)

REVIEW:

Apparently Fandango apparently broke his nose during the bout. Major props to Fandango and the WWE for continuing the bout. But seriously, WWE needs get more creative with these mid-card matches and feuds, seriously.

Backstage, Booker T wanted to talk to Daniel Bryan. Booker said Bryan was “too good to go back to local gyms and wrestle for 50 bucks.” and that he “needs to rethink about going against the McMahons”. The former SmackDown! GM advised Bryan to give up the WWE Championship match. Bryan then responded yelling “Tell me you didn’t just say that!”, a quote that Booker is know for. The segment ended by Booker cautiously advising Bryan to think about it, and assured him that he  was on his side. It was a good way to get over the seriousness of the situation.

DOLPH ZIGGLER VS. RYBACK:

After making his way to the ring and waiting for his opponent, Ziggler was ambushed from behind by Dean Ambrose. Ambrose continued to beatdown Dolph, driving him shoulder-first into the ring post, until Ryback’s made his way out (to an ocean of “GOLDBERG!” chants) for his match vs. Dolph.

Ryback continued the assault on Ziggler as the crowd started a “You can’t wrestle” chant. Ziggler suddenly dropped Ryback with a dropkick as a counter to the meathook clothesline. Ryback came back (no pun) and this time was successful with the meathook clothesline, followed by the ShellShock to pick up the victory.

WINNER: Ryback

REVIEW:

Yet another angle driven match to put over The McMahon’s and the Shield’s “reign of terror” over the WWE. Both superstars have nosedived from Main Event status to well, that… shame.

STEPHANIE MCMAHON ADDRESSES THE BIG SHOW:

Backstage, RAW GM Brad Maddox informs Triple H and Stephanie that Big Show had refused to face Bryan tonight. Stephanie says she will handle it and at the top of the hour, heads to the ring, where she calls out the Big Show. Stephanie acknowledges that Big Show is broke due to not-so-smart investments and that he is in breach of his iron clad contract if he doesn’t perform. Stephanie continued, saying that there is not many place for giants outside the WWE, and also that giants don’t live as long as (normal) people.

REVIEW:

Big Show seems to have another breakdown, reminiscent of last year’s saga with Johnny Laurinaitis. But it does however once again show how powerful the “reign of terror” is, a good way to get it over.

After that, a video played announcing that EDGE WILL RETURN TO RAW NEXT MONDAY FOR ONE WEEK ONLY!

3MB VS. THE PRIME TIME PLAYERS:

A nice tag team match was next up on RAW. Slater talked some trash before the match to Titus, firing up the big man. Titus stomped through Slater and tagged in Darren Young, Slater came back and Slater and Mahal took turns beating down Darren Young, until he got the hot tag on Titus, which inevitably led to the pinfall after Titus slammed Mahal.

WINNER: The Prime Time Players
REVIEW:

PTP continue rolling, it’s possible we may see them in the tag team championship picture very soon. A regular tag-team match, Titus looked impressive nonetheless.

–

Heyman confronted Maddox backstage, and asked him to end his phone-call. Heyman told Maddox that if Punk had have got his hands on Heyman, then Heyman wouldn’t be seen on RAW again. Paul then said that Maddox doesn’t “know what’s best for business”, which brough in Triple H, who said he was impressed with how Heyman has “weasled” his way out of danger in the past. Curtis Axel & Paul Heyman vs. CM Punk was announced for Night of Champions, much to the disarray of Heyman.

CODY RHODES VS. RANDY ORTON:

Cody Rhodes prepares for possibly his last ever match in the WWE. (via WWE.com)

Is this it for Cody Rhodes? That was the question going into the match, that put Cody’s career on-the-line. The he two former members of Legacy, Cody and Orton traded blows to start the bout with Orton getting the upper hand, however Cody came back with a picture-perfect dropkick for a near fall. Orton once again gained the upper hand, clubbing Cody’s chest and dropped him with a back breaker from the top rope leading to a commercial.

After the break and Randy took control of the match, as the WWE performers were shown watching on backstage. Cody began to make a comeback and loud “Randy Savage” chant broke out from Des Moines, as Cody made a come back. Cody was so close to winning, getting a two-count thanks to a beautiful spring missile dropkick. Randy hit the DDT from the second rope, and went for the RKO, but Cody countered and hit Randy with the disaster kick which evented in a near-fall, which so many thought that was it. Cody missed a Disaster kick, and Orton delivered an RKO to pick up the victory after 13 minutes.

HHH comes out and tells everyone to give it up for Cody Rhodes. Hunter says that Cody went all in and fought like his life was on the line. He fought with heart. Hunter tells Cody from the bottom of his heart how much he respects Cody. This is a business and in business, he needs winners so he cannot let personal feelings cloud his judgement.
The Game eventually informs Cody that it is with deep regret that he has to tell Cody that he is fired. The crowd go quiet for a moment as Cody looks lost in the middle of the ring, and then start chanting “Thank You Cody!” as he left the ring.

WINNER: Randy Orton

REVIEW:

An excellent match that was not only technically sound, but really got the crowd engaged due to the storyline factor of Cody being fired and questions about his future. This kept everyone interested to see the outcome. There are many questions coming from this match: Is Cody really done? What happens with the Sandow feud? Is Cody actually leaving the WWE? We’ll have to wait and see.

Is this the last ever time, we will ever see Cody Rhodes? (via WWE.com)

CM PUNK CALLS OUT PAUL HEYMAN:

Top of the third hour, Punk made his way out with a kendo stick in his hand to extremely loud “CM Punk” chant by the Iowa crowd. Punk said he kept his promises, but that the time for talk is over. Punk asked the fans if they saw what happened to him last Monday. Punk wants to talk to everyone in the building and his friends and family in Chicago. Everyone who bought his T-Shirt or made a sign to support him. CM Punk said he wanted to fight Paul Heyman, and Punk said he will get his hands on Heyman and Axel in 13 days at the PPV.

He also said even he wouldn’t fight himself right now because of the state of mind he is in.
Punk wanted to say something to all the fans around the globe, but was cut off by the loud “CM Punk” chants. He said the fans will see a side of Punk they had never seen before. He said the fans might not like that side of Punk, and said Heyman certainly won’t. He said last week, Heyman told Punk he broke his heart, but at Night of Champions, Punk said he’ll break Heyman’s face. And then said “I Promise”.

REVIEW:

An outstanding and intense promo by CM Punk, with fantastic mic skills as usual, further adding fuel to the fire of the rivalry between himself and Paul Heyman.

Backstage, Big Show confronted Bryan and said he had no other option. Bryan said he will take care of Show tonight, like he defeated him to win his first World title.

BRIE BELLA VS. NATALYA VS. NAOMI:

Before the match there was the video replay of AJ’s comments about the other divas from last week. AJ Lee was on commentary at ringside with Cole, JBL & Lawler and said that she believes that the other divas are interested in going into movies and the celebrity spotlight, but she only cares about wrestling, and the Divas Championship.

Natalya dominated the match, and then AJ Lee got so boiled over at ringside that she interfered in the match causing a No Contest, she attacked the competitors but they outnumbered her and beat her down, leaving her lying in the ring.

REVIEW:

A very short match, AJ on commentary was a nice touch as it helped to add to the storyline.

DAMIEN SANDOW VS. ROB VAN DAM:

Ricardo is introduced, and then introduces ‘One of a Kind’, Rob van Dam to the ring, to take on the intellectual saviour of the masses and Mr. Money in the Bank, Damien Sandow.

RVD and Sandow exchanged blows to start things off, and Sandow got a near fall. RVD tried to build some momentum but Sandow consistently cut him off. RVD eventually control of the match, but was distracted by Alberto Del Rio on the stage as WWE went into commercial break.

Back from the break, and Sandow was in control. RVD hit a heel kick but was quickly halted, as Sandow dropped  Rob with a side Russian leg sweep and the Elbow of Disdain for a near count. Sandow then delivered a beautiful swinging neckbreaker for another 2 count. RVD hit a superkick followed by the rolling thunder, followed by the 5-star frogsplash.

WINNER: Rob van Dam

REVIEW:

RVD had to be featured on the show as he’s the number one contender to the world title, and he picks up yet another victory to continue building momentum on his way to Night of Champions. Will RVD win the World title? Ricardo’s presence might swing things in RVD’s favour come 15th September. Stay tuned.

Stephanie makes a fatal four way at the Night of Champions PPV between Naomi, Natalya, Brie and AJ for the WWE Divas championship.

Backstage, Josh interviews Cody Rhodes while he is being escorted out of the building. Cody says that the McMahons hated the Rhodes, with Vince putting his legendary father in Polka Dots and dance, while his brother was painted with gold. Cody said Orton was the better man on the night.

DANIEL BRYAN VS. THE BIG SHOW:

The WWE superstars were once again made to watch near the entrance area.

Bryan made his entrance first to loud “YES!” chants, and Big Show made his way out next. Big Show tried to explain that he didn’t want to hurt Bryan and requested Bryan to leave the ring, but Daniel kept attacking Show. Show came back with a big boot and huge chops. Show tried to calm Bryan down, but Bryan kept attacking Show. Bryan delivered brutal kicks to Show’s torso and dropped him with a DDT for a near fall. Bryan went for a cross body, but Show dropped him with a spear. Big Show tried to leave, but that brought out Triple H and The Shield.

Show told Triple H that he wouldn’t fight Bryan, which led to The Shield attacking Bryan to cause the DQ. Show was made to stand and watch as The Shield delivered the triple powerbomb to Bryan. The Game, Triple H, then wanted Show to punch Bryan, but Show refused and walked away. Stephanie then came out and led Show back into the ring. Show was then forced to knock Bryan out with the punch, and was escorted to the top of the ramp by Stephanie and Triple H.

Orton made his way down to the ring and ended the night by standing over a lifeless Bryan, as Show looked on from the ramp.

WINNER: Daniel Bryan (via DQ)

REVIEW:

A kind of messy segment, but the message was put across and further solidified the authority and pure power that the corporation have on the WWE Universe.

RESULTS:

  • The Miz def. Fandango (via Submission)
  • Ryback def. Dolph Ziggler
  • The Prime Time Players def. 3MB (Heath Slater & Jinder Mahal)
  • Randy Orton def. Cody Rhodes
  • Brie Bella vs. Natalya vs. Naomi (No Contest)
  • Rob Van Dam def. Damien Sandow
  • Daniel Bryan def. Big Show (via DQ)

OVERALL SHOW REVIEW:

A lacklustre edition of RAW. Not much wrestling involved as 3 matches had no ending. There were some gems such as the Cody Rhodes storyline and the CM Punk-Heyman rivalry was intense, but overall it was pretty much the same as last week regarding the corporation and the authority of the McMahons, The Shield & Randy Orton.

LAS VEGAS – Curtis Axel proved why he is a Champion with a win over Cody Rhodes following a terrific contest on Main Event. Also on the night, Kofi Kingston faced Fandango, and The Prime Time Players were in tag team action.

Curtis Axel triumphant after defeating Cody Rhodes (via WWE.com)

CURTIS AXEL VS. CODY RHODES
In the featured contest of the night, Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel faced Cody Rhodes one-on-one in a battle of WWE’s most promising talents.

Spanning just under 15 minutes long, both Axel and Rhodes showcased their great technicality. Cody Rhodes’ athleticism allowed him to take control of the Intercontinental Champion. Another match packed with near falls but it proved for some great entertainment. Ultimately, one near fall would be followed by a solid culmination, as Curtis Axel kicked out the cradle, and also used the outside to his advantage. Axel held on to the apron when Rhodes attempted to pull him back in, allowing him to nail Cody Rhodes with a DDT for the victory.

Review: Great, great match. WWE Main Event is developing a general concept that I am liking, putting on a quality match between two upcoming stars, or at least one upcoming star in the match. This is making it a great show to watch. Really good stuff in the ring by both Cody Rhodes and Curtis Axel.

The Intercontinental Champion picks up a big win over Cody Rhodes. Is Curtis Axel prepared to team with Paul Heyman in a Handicap match vs. CM Punk at WWE Night of Champions?

PRIME TIME PLAYERS VS. THE REAL AMERICANS
The Prime Time Players and The Real Americans looked to add to their recent run-ins as they were in tag team action. As of late, the Prime Time Players have got one-up on Swagger and Cesaro and looked to do the same on Main Event.

Take all the action you saw over their recent matches, collate it together and add some more, then you had the match. But it was a quality tag match, no doubt about that, with athletics on display from Darren Young, and of course the brutal power game between O’Neil and Swagger – always fun to watch. Following chaotic outbreaks in the ring, Titus O’Neil was able to hit Jack Swagger with Clash of the Titus to give Prime Time Players another win.

Review: Yet again, The Real Americans lose. Painful to watch, real painful. The match was formulaic as it contained a lot of the action as before in the other matches, but it seemed to flow albeit with a predictable outcome.

The Prime Time Players once again throw off The Real Americans, as they continue on a roll. Are they set to pursue further in WWE’s tag team division?

This is the second time in the week of which O’Neil has pinned Swagger (via WWE.com)

KOFI KINGSTON VS. FANDANGO
Jamaican Sensation Kofi Kingston stepped in to the ring to wrestle Fandango in a Singles match of two very agile competitors.

Fandango got his usual tangos and tap-taps in, but when Kofi Kingston was on a roll, Fandango was on a collision course with a devastating Trouble in Paradise… then Summer Rae pulled Kofi Kingston’s ankles resulting in a disqualification.

Review: Some generic wrestling here, and another annoying outcome. Awful disqualification, throwaway match.

Kofi Kingston picks up a win over Fandango… via Disqualification. Will he step in the ring to tango yet again?

Kofi Kingston has been on a roll as of late (via WWE.com)

RESULTS:
  • Curtis Axel def. Cody Rhodes
  • Prime Time Players def. The Real Americans
  • Kofi Kingston def. Fandango (via Disqualification)
OVERALL SHOW REVIEW
Curtis Axel vs. Cody Rhodes owned the show, great match. Meanwhile Fandango vs. Kofi and the tag match were not very interesting, it was all about Axel and Rhodes. Main Event is becoming the show I want it to be, a showcase of wrestling from midcarders. Pleasant to watch nowadays.

The Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel shines, The Prime Time Players are at their Prime with another win and Kofi Kingston makes Fandango tango… to a defeat – all in another edition of WWE Main Event!

PHOENIX Daniel Bryan was a victim of justice following a gauntlet match against The Shield as Triple H ordered vindication on the #1 contender for the WWE Championship.

TRIPLE H OPENS THE SHOW:

The Shield were once again standing in as security with the arrival of WWE’s Chief Operating Officer Triple H.

The Cerebral Assassin discussed further on the matter regarding Daniel Bryan and Triple H and once again was the recipient of much heat from the crowd in Phoenix. Then he introduced the WWE Champion Randy Orton, followed by revealing a brand new car for The Viper, paid out from his own pockets – how nice of him.

Moments before Randy Orton would check out the car, Daniel Bryan made a timely arrival with the crowd erupting in a YES! YES! YES! frenzy. The former WWE Champion would have some fitting words for both men, with him contrasting Triple H’s change from a rebel in a leather jacket to… well, a sellout in an executive suit – what a journey…

Triple H would respond with a fantastic booking. It was an attempt to make Daniel Bryan a victim of ‘Justice’ as he would run the gauntlet against the three members of The Shield – some superb wrestling scheduled for the night, then.

Review: Mixed segment to start the show but it set the stage really well for the night. Triple H may have got spectators restless early on, but with Randy Orton being introduced things got better. The Porsche is pretty cool, I guess – but maybe it is some next level advertising. Anyway, with Daniel Bryan facing The Shield later that night, the WWE Universe were pumped up. Incredible potential for the main event.

Triple H has a gift for the WWE Champion and it’s #1 Contender. A stunning car is now in The Viper’s possession. But for Daniel Bryan, his gift may come at a much bigger price… not to Triple H – but to himself. Daniel Bryan receives the gift of Justice in a gauntlet match against The Shield. Would Daniel Bryan be The Shield’s next victim?

A WWE App vote is revealed for Curtis Axel vs. CM Punk. Viewers are asked to vote for three options. Paul Heyman as referee, Paul Heyman banned for ringside, or if CM Punk wins, Paul Heyman will have to step in the ring with him. Here is Heyman’s reaction… via TOUT.

CODY RHODES VS. FANDANGO:

Money in the Bank holder Damien Sandow looked on from ringside as Cody Rhodes battled Fandango in Single’s Competition. However, a few interferences later lead to an impromptu tag team match.

Cody Rhodes and Fandango’s match was cut short, as Fandango was distracted when his music went off around the arena. It became apparent that The Miz in fact would mimic Fandango distracting him thus allowing Cody Rhodes to get the roll-up pin and win.

This would however lead to Damien Sandow teaming up with Fandango to battle Cody Rhodes and The Miz in a tag team match.

CODY RHODES & THE MIZ VS. FANDANGO AND DAMIEN SANDOW:

More comical action was in store during this bout, but yet again it would not have the best of finishes. With the two rivalries momentarily intertwined in the tag team match, it ended with a demonstration of poor tag team work. Fandango fled the ring leaving Damien Sandow to fight for himself. Alone and vulnerable, Damien Sandow would get pinned by The Miz.

Review: AWESOME? I think not. It seems like Damien Sandow’s Money in the Bank attribution has become a Golden ticket for him to… job. I know that his redemption is lurking, but it just pains me to see Sandow continue to decline. Two matches were in the duration of the segment, with the occurrence of little significance. Efficient storyline booking can be credited, as this leads to inevitable showdowns to end the rivalry. Miz and Rhodes effectively won the match, taking into account that The Miz pinned Damien Sandow, and Cody Rhodes pinned Fandango earlier on.

The Miz pins Damien Sandow whilst looking on at Fandango from the stage (via WWE.com)
Cody Rhodes and The Miz prevail over their foes… but this is just a little of many more things to come in the already storied rivalry. Has Cody Rhodes got Damien Sandow in dire straits? And will The Miz take the spring out of Fandango’s step?

CURTIS AXEL VS. CM PUNK:

It was a very pivotal stipulation, voted courtesy of the WWE Universe, that added an extra buzz as Curtis Axel stepped inside the squared circle to battle CM Punk.

Paul Heyman’s very livelihood was on the line, because if CM Punk was to win, he would get Paul Heyman in the ring promptly after. Following several minutes of great action between two superb wrestlers, CM Punk was finally able to hit the GTS pinning Curtis Axel – cue Paul Heyman’s priceless facial expression, with the knowledge that he would have to face CM Punk.

The Mad Scientist attempted to flee the arena but security would refrain him from doing so, sending him back inside the ring.

It would seem that the night would finally be the night where CM Punk would get his hands on Paul Heyman, but once again he would be saved by Curtis Axel. Curtis Axel managed to put handcuffs on CM Punk, which would be the start of some lethal and savage punishment to the Straight-Edge Savior. Despite one great flurry of offense by CM Punk, Axel utilized the Steel Chair to put CM Punk in a situation where he was unable to fight back. This allowed Paul Heyman to unleash a beating on The Best in the World, with viscous attacks from the Kendo Stick while shouting at CM Punk creating a rather dramatic situation that left Heyman emotional… and Punk battered.

Review: Really awesome segment. I honestly don’t see why the crowd at the US Airways Center chanted “BORING”, because this told the story so well and made things real serious. The best thing is that the CM Punk vs. Paul Heyman feud is far from over.

CM Punk managed to overthrow Curtis Axel, but the opportunity to finally punish Paul Heyman was suddenly thwarted following a viscous attack leaving The Best in the World in a really bad way. How will CM Punk get his revenge?

CM Punk thought he had Paul Heyman one-on-one, but this would not be the case (via WWE.com)

BRIE BELLA VS. NATALYA

It was a SummerSlam rematch as Divas Natalya and Brie Bella went one-on-one with the Total Divas’ cast accompanying ringside and new Diva JoJo Offerman being the guest ring announcer for the bout.

Natalya once again proved herself as a great wrestling veteran, as she took to Brie Bella in the ring. She was closing in on another victory over Brie Bella when she locked in the Sharpshooter, but Nikki Bella and Eva Marie thwarted this abruptly, distracting the referee and allowing Brie Bella to get to the ropes.

The opportunity was then capitalized on, as Brie Bella finished Natalya, pinning her for the victory. However the celebration would be cut short by the Divas’ Champion AJ Lee, who did drop one hell of a pipebomb on the Total Divas’ cast.

AJ Lee said that the Total Divas’ cast reverted to reality television because they were not good enough to be actors. It was one statement part of a well-executed promo that sent shock-waves through the Divas’ Divison.

Review: The match itself was pretty boring, and I wonder what direction WWE are really heading in with JoJo. Anyway, AJ Lee nailed the promo and completely owned the Total Divas’ cast. Even if it was just to promote Total Divas’ it was fantastic. This must set up for AJ Lee vs. a Total Divas’ cast member at Night of Champions, maybe a Triple Threat match is on the cards with Brie Bella, Natalya and AJ. We will have to wait and see.

Brie Bella may have defeated Natalya. But no-one expected such a shocker when AJ Lee dropped a serious pipebomb on the Total Divas’ cast. Is the Crazy Chick set to defend her title against one of the reality show’s cast members?

ALBERTO DEL RIO VS. ROB VAN DAM:

World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio took to the ring in an attempt to defeat Rob Van Dam, meanwhile there were high stakes for RVD as he fought for #1 Contendership for the title.

Ricardo Rodriguez continued to support his new client Rob Van Dam as he maintained control of the Mexican Aristocrat, and following some nailed kicks, high flying moves as part of an engaging slugfest, a distraction from Rodriguez allowed Rob Van Dam to pick up the victory and secured a World Heavyweight Championship at WWE Night of Champions.

Review: When this match was first announced I was questioning it, but now with Rob Van Dam as #1 Contender they are on a crash course for the World Heavyweight Championship. Good match with two great kick artists.

Rob Van Dam’s victory over Alberto Del Rio now sets him a World Heavyweight Championship shot at WWE Night of Champions. Is Rob Van Dam set to be the next World Heavyweight Champion?

Rob Van Dam’s win makes him the #1 contender for the World Championship (via WWE.com)

RANDY ORTON VS. CHRISTIAN

The WWE Champion Randy Orton renewed a storied rivalry with Christian in an epic encounter on RAW.

There was some fantastic action throughout the contest, with Christian throwing some of his best shots at The Viper. Knowledge of each other in the ring was on full display with both being familiar with one another’s moveset. Christian was inches away from securing a pivotal victory over the WWE Champion, but with the referee’s back turned, Randy Orton raked Christian’s eyes leaving Captain Charisma dazed.

Christian walked around and straight into a lethal RKO by Randy Orton, a move that got him the win to culminate an excellent encounter.

But as Orton embraced his victory, Daniel Bryan appeared on the large screen next to Randy Orton’s car that he received earlier in the night. The former WWE Champion revealed YES! spray paint all over the car, leaving Orton and Triple H distraught. Following a commercial break Triple H was not happy, and ordered Brad Maddox to get all the superstars who found the car spray painting a joke to head to the stage when Daniel Bryan battled in the main event.

Review: Wow. Great, great match. Christian continues to show his great talent and Randy Orton’s win is huge but the rake to the eyes gives Christian some leeway. Daniel Bryan spraying YES! all over the car was a classic.

The Viper knocks off Christian in a compelling encounter, but for his car, it has went from a Caddilac Escalade to a YEScalade… How will Randy Orton and Triple H get vindication for this mad act?

JACK SWAGGER VS. TITUS O’NEIL

The Prime Time Players took to the ring, followed by The Real Americans making an entrance as Jack Swagger battled Titus O’Neil in a battle of brutality and power.

Two big guys battled in a very entertaining match, ultimately it saw Titus O’Neil pick up the win, as The Real Americans continue to decline.

Review: And so… the Real Americans/Prime Time Player saga continues, with the imminent outcome of The Prime Time Players prevailing. This push has made me question the actual point of the Real Americans, they are a tag team going to waste unfortunately, and this bugs me.. a lot.

Once again The Prime Time Players are victorious. With the “We The People” campaign now declining, are the Prime Time Players open for a revitalized challenge?

The Real Americans suffer yet another loss (via WWE.com)

Brad Maddox gets CM Punk backstage and announces that he will be in a Handicap match at the next WWE PPV, Night of Champions against Paul Heyman and Curtis Axel. Plus, if Paul Heyman tries to escape, he will never be seen in WWE again.

DANIEL BRYAN VS. THE SHIELD
(GAUNTLET MATCH):

It was time for the main event. The WWE superstars on the stage were reluctant to answer questions in fear of being punished in the same manner. Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan kicked things off.

VS. SETH ROLLINS

Wrestling fans got what they wanted. A high-pace, technical wrestling showcase that was just fantastic to watch. Following several minutes of superb action, Daniel Bryan executed an awesome German Suplex from the top rope, sending Seth Rollins crashing face first to the canvas. This was followed up by a knee to the head allowing Daniel Bryan to score the fall in emphatic fashion.

VS. DEAN AMBROSE

Dean Ambrose quickly got into the ring immediately attacking Daniel Bryan, but he quickly found himself locked in the YES! Lock. Roman Reigns had his back and broke it up, but this got Dean Ambrose disqualified, meaning Daniel Byran was one step away… but in his way stood Roman Reigns.

VS. ROMAN REIGNS

Then Roman Reigns found himself battling the YES! Lock but his fellow Shield members attacked Daniel Bryan too. The superstars looked on, unable to make a move, with frustration building.

Daniel Bryan may have won the gauntlet effectively, but he was subject to a vicious attack from The Shield, followed by an RKO as a bold statement was made once again by the Corporation.

Review: Just amazing in-ring work between Daniel Bryan and Seth Rollins – absolutely superb action that was fantastic to watch. Shame that we did not get more Ambrose/Bryan action but I guess they are saving it for another day. The ending was so well done, with the superstars unable to do anything, great, great stuff.

RESULTS:

  • Cody Rhodes def. Fandango
  • Cody Rhodes & The Miz def. Damien Sandow & Fandango
  • CM Punk def. Curtis Axel
  • CM Punk vs. Curtis Axel – No Contest
  • Brie Bella def. Natalya
  • Rob Van Dam def. Alberto Del Rio (New #1 Contender)
  • Randy Orton def. Christian
  • Titus O’Neil def. Jack Swagger
  • Daniel Bryan def. Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose (via DQ) and Roman Reigns (via DQ) (Gauntlet Match)

OVERALL SHOW REVIEW
Solid edition of RAW. Superb wrestling in the ring especially with Daniel Bryan and Seth Rollins, plus the great encounter between Christian and Randy Orton. A lot of seriousness in the show that has shown how things have really stepped up, the Heyman segment is one to remember, along with the superstars being helpless to Daniel Bryan. Great episode.

Daniel Bryan once again falls victim to the “Gift that keeps on giving” as Triple H’s vindication is sought by The Hounds of Justice. Things take shape heading into WWE Night of Champions with the WWE Universe expectant of more to come after a solid show.
